India’s Smaller Soybean Crop Tightens Meal Outlook but Imports Cushion Blow

Global soybean benchmarks are holding firm. CBOT November 2026 futures trade near 1,311.5 USc/bu, roughly EUR 11.9–12.0/bu at current FX, with the front contracts close to recent 52‑week highs, reflecting weather and yield risk in key producers.
Physical indications show a mixed but generally steady tone. Recent offers (all converted, approx.) imply:
Steady to slightly firmer cash prices in China and modest strength in Ukrainian CPT soybeans align with resilient futures, indicating that buyers remain willing to pay up for quality supply as new-crop northern hemisphere harvests and India’s reduced crop outlook shape forward coverage.
Supply & Demand
The key shift for soybeans is in India, where output for 2026/27 is now projected at 9.6 million tonnes, down 8% from an earlier 10.4 million tonne forecast. The downgrade is primarily driven by erratic monsoon rainfall during planting and a 6% cut in soybean area to 10.5 million hectares.
Rainfall disruptions in Maharashtra delayed sowing, forced replanting and discouraged some farmers from persisting with soybeans, while Madhya Pradesh enjoyed comparatively favourable precipitation. All-India monsoon rainfall from 1 June to 7 September is about 14% below normal, underlining the national weather stress and helping validate concerns over yields in rain‑fed oilseeds like soybean.
At the same time, farmers have shifted land to cotton, maize and higher-value vegetables, attracted by stronger price signals and income prospects. This structural move suggests soybean area could remain under pressure beyond a single season, especially in regions where competing crops offer better margins.
To offset the weaker crop, India’s soybean imports are now forecast at 500,000 tonnes, underpinned by favourable harvests among African suppliers. While this does not fully replace the lost domestic production, it should help bridge part of the gap for crushers and feed users and limit the upside in local prices versus a scenario without import flexibility.
Crushing, Soymeal & Fundamentals
Lower domestic bean availability is expected to reduce Indian crushing volumes by around 6%. This will directly translate into lower soymeal output, tightening domestic feed protein supply and potentially trimming India’s availability for soymeal exports.
The poultry and livestock sectors are likely to face higher or at least more volatile meal prices, especially if demand remains firm. Feed compounders may respond by tweaking rations toward alternative proteins where feasible, but substitution options are limited in the short term without cost penalties.
Internationally, soymeal futures have traded mixed in recent sessions, with meal lagging soybeans at times as oil and energy-linked demand drivers have been in focus. However, the Indian supply shortfall adds a regional bullish element for meal, particularly for South Asia and nearby markets where Indian soymeal has been a key supplier.
For crushers, margins will hinge on the balance between rising bean procurement costs and soymeal and soyoil realizations. If domestic bean prices rise faster than product values, utilisation rates and crush may decline more than the currently expected 6%, tightening meal further.
Weather & Crop Outlook
India’s 2026 southwest monsoon began late and has underperformed overall, with seasonal rainfall around 90% of long-period average and a high probability of below-normal totals. The rainfall deficit has been uneven, hitting several rain‑fed regions that are important for soybean.
Recent assessments highlight rainfall stress across large rain‑fed areas in Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Rajasthan and Gujarat, with soybean specifically cited among vulnerable crops. Short‑term monsoon outlooks for early September point to continued variability, suggesting yield outcomes remain weather‑dependent in late pod‑filling and maturation stages.
For now, a crop around 9.6 million tonnes appears realistic given the earlier planting disruptions and area loss. Upside to this number would require exceptionally favourable late-season conditions, while a further downgrade cannot be ruled out if September rainfall underperforms in core soybean belts.

- Crushers and feed mills in India: Consider advancing coverage for Q4 2026 and early 2027 soymeal needs, as reduced crush and uncertain yields could tighten nearby supply and support basis levels.
- Importers in Asia and Middle East: Monitor Indian demand for beans and meal closely; a stronger import pull from India could firm Black Sea and African bean values and tighten regional balances.
- Producers and exporters (US, Brazil, Black Sea): Use current price strength and elevated CBOT levels to scale in hedges while keeping some upside open in case Indian yields or South American weather disappoint further.
- End‑users in Europe: Diversify origin exposure (US, Brazil, Black Sea, India) and quality types (GMO-free, organic) to mitigate potential basis spikes should Asian demand for meal and beans pick up.
