Indian Sesame Prices Hold Firm as Monsoon Risk Keeps Floor Under Market

Indian sesame prices remain firm in late July 2026 as monsoon and El Niño risks keep a floor under New Delhi FOB offers. Short-term EUR outlook and trading tips.

Indian sesame prices are holding broadly steady in late July, with a firm bias on premium black and EU-grade hulled seeds as weather and kharif uncertainties prevent any meaningful downside. EUR-based export offers remain competitive but not cheap, and buyers are showing limited interest in chasing prices lower ahead of clearer crop prospects in August. The broader Indian kharif season is recovering after a very dry June, but sowing and yield risks remain a key theme under emerging El Niño conditions. Improved July rainfall has narrowed acreage gaps for several crops, yet total kharif area is still below last year and government briefings continue to monitor monsoon intensity, reservoir levels and input availability closely. Against this backdrop, sesame remains a weather-sensitive niche: buyers are cautious but aware that any renewed rainfall deficit or localised damage in key states could quickly tighten exportable surpluses and lift prices from today’s already firm base.

  • Overall, Indian sesame prices in EUR are holding a narrow, slightly easing range, with most movement driven by FX and freight rather than sharp shifts in seed values.
  • Premiums for EU-grade hulled and high-purity black sesame remain intact, reflecting ongoing quality and residue-compliance concerns in Europe following recent alerts on pesticide residues in Indian sesame imports.

Supply, Demand & Weather

India’s agriculture ministry reports that kharif sowing has picked up sharply in July after a poor start, helped by a revival of monsoon rains, though total sown area remains below last year and authorities are closely tracking El Niño-related risks.  Sesame is part of the oilseed basket whose sowing window is concentrated between late June and the third week of July.

June 2026 was among the driest in more than a century, but July rainfall has significantly reduced the national deficit, with particularly better conditions in northwest India, including parts of Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh that contribute to sesame output.  Nonetheless, multiple analyses and advisories highlight that the season is unfolding under a below-normal monsoon pattern and strengthening El Niño, leaving yield and pod-filling risk elevated even where acreage improves.

On the demand side, global sesame buying remains cautious but underpinned by steady requirements in China, the EU and South Korea. Earlier in July, market intelligence pointed to firm tone in international sesame prices, supported by talk of additional South Korean tenders and still-limited comfort around India’s 2026 white sesame crop size.  European buyers remain particularly sensitive to food safety and pesticide-residue issues after new EU notifications on Indian sesame, which favours suppliers able to demonstrate tight quality control and clean certificates.

Short-Term Weather Outlook (India, New Delhi)

The India Meteorological Department’s latest local bulletin for New Delhi (Safdarjung) on July 27 points to typical monsoon conditions, with warm, humid weather, intermittent cloudiness and the risk of light to moderate showers over the coming days.  Temperatures are expected to stay in the low-to-mid 30s °C range for daytime highs, with little deviation from seasonal norms.

  • This pattern is broadly supportive for late kharif fieldwork and early crop establishment, though any renewed monsoon lull or heavy localised downpour could still create pockets of moisture stress or waterlogging in sesame fields in north and central India.
  • Given the El Niño backdrop and still-below-normal seasonal rainfall projections, market participants are likely to keep a weather-premium embedded in Indian sesame offers until pod formation and early yield indications improve in August.

Fundamentals & Market Drivers

  • Crop risk vs. stock comfort: Earlier July analysis highlighted that while delayed kharif sowing and a smaller summer white sesame crop in India were price-supportive, comparatively comfortable Chinese port stocks have so far limited any explosive upside.  This dynamic still appears to be in place.
  • Monsoon and El Niño: Government reviews on July 21 emphasised close monitoring of monsoon behaviour, reservoir levels and sowing progress in sensitive districts, underlining that kharif outcomes will hinge on rainfall distribution rather than acreage alone.
  • Regulatory and quality risk: Fresh EU food safety notifications on residues in Indian sesame underscore ongoing scrutiny of pesticide use and post-harvest handling.  Exporters investing in residue management and traceability are better placed to defend premiums and secure long-term contracts.
  • Macro & FX: The rupee’s modest softness versus the US dollar during early July marginally improved India’s export competitiveness in USD terms, but EUR-based buyers see a more muted benefit as cross-currency moves and freight costs partially offset FX gains.

Trading Outlook (Next 1–2 Weeks)

  • Importers (EU, Middle East): Use current flat-to-soft EUR offers from India to secure near-term coverage, particularly for EU-grade hulled and residue-compliant lots, but avoid over-buying beyond Q4 2026 until clearer crop signals emerge.
  • Indian exporters: Maintain offer discipline on premium black and EU-grade hulled sesame while being flexible on standard grades to keep volumes moving amid cautious global demand. Consider partial hedging against any late-monsoon weather shock that could tighten supplies and push domestic prices higher.
  • Industrial users & roasters: Lock in a portion of requirements at today’s levels, which embed weather risk but not a full crop-failure premium. Hold some open positions to benefit if improved August rains ease fundamental concerns.

3-Day Regional Price View (India, New Delhi)

  • Hulled sesame 99.9–99.98% FOB: Expected broadly stable in the next three days, trading in a tight band around 1,430–1,470 EUR/mt, with only marginal downside/upside tied to day-to-day FX and freight swings.
  • Natural white sesame FOB: Likely to remain steady near 1,250–1,350 EUR/mt, with thin liquidity but no clear catalyst for immediate weakening.
  • Black sesame (regular to super Z) FOB: Prices should stay firm to slightly supported, around 1,720–1,880 EUR/mt, as premium demand and quality constraints offset generally cautious global buying.
