New 1509 Rice Under Pressure as Fresh Arrivals Weigh on Delhi Market

New 1509 basmati rice prices in North India soften as fresh paddy arrivals rise and demand lags. Seasonal pressure likely unless export buying improves.

New-crop 1509 basmati rice in North India is slipping as fresh paddy arrivals outpace buying, putting mills and exporters on the defensive. Without a timely pick-up in export procurement, prices risk further seasonal downside in the short term. Indian rice markets around New Delhi are shifting into harvest mode. Early 1509 paddy inflows from Punjab and Haryana are rising, while domestic and export demand has been slow to respond. This has translated into softer quotations for 1509 steam and related grades, even as coarse grains such as maize and bajra find better support from the feed sector. With the southwest monsoon set to gradually retreat during September and weather becoming less of an immediate threat, price direction now hinges mainly on the pace of arrivals versus basmati export demand and stocking strategies by mills and traders.

Prices

New-crop 1509 steam rice in North India has eased as fresh supplies build and buyers stay cautious. In physical trade, new 1509 steam is reported around USD 83.6–84.7 per quintal, reflecting clear pressure from expanded raw paddy availability. This contrasts with firmer sentiment in maize and bajra, where poultry and cattle-feed demand is absorbing supply.

FOB offers from New Delhi as of 2 September show small but broad declines versus late August, confirming the softening bias for basmati, including 1509, 1121 and Sharbati. Meanwhile, average wholesale rice in India is quoted near INR 4,157 per 100 kg, indicating that the current weakness is more pronounced in early basmati than in the wider rice complex.

Supply & Demand

The key driver is the rapid build-up of new-crop 1509 paddy arrivals in Punjab and Haryana, which is translating into higher stocks at mills and traders. Recent mandi data show basmati paddy 1509 trading around INR 3,600–4,000 per quintal in leading markets, confirming that harvest pressure is well underway.

On the demand side, basmati export buying has so far lagged the increase in physical availability. Trade sources point to only moderate forward coverage from key Middle Eastern buyers, while non-basmati exports continue to outperform basmati in terms of volume growth. Domestic consumption is steady but not strong enough to offset new-crop inflows, leaving the market dependent on export procurement picking up pace in the coming weeks.

Fundamentals & Weather

Overall Indian rice fundamentals remain comfortable after successive large harvests, but the 2026 kharif season is unfolding against a backdrop of below-normal monsoon rainfall (around 86% of the long-period average by end-August), which may trim yields slightly versus last year. For high-value basmati, however, the immediate story is not scarcity but timing: early 1509 fields were harvested into a still-subdued demand window.

Weather-wise, models indicate a gradual weakening of the southwest monsoon with drier-than-normal conditions developing across much of India in September, especially over northwest regions where basmati is concentrated. This pattern is broadly supportive for harvest logistics and grain quality, reducing near-term weather risk and reinforcing the supply-side pressure on prices as more fields are cut and marketed.

Short-Term Forecast & Trading Outlook

In the near term, the balance of risks for 1509 rice prices remains skewed to the downside as long as arrivals keep outpacing demand. An early retreat of the monsoon suggests harvest will advance smoothly, but also that the market will need stronger export interest to absorb the flow without deeper discounts.

  • Exporters / millers: Consider staggered procurement rather than front-loading purchases, using current softness to build coverage but leaving room for potential further downside if export orders remain slow.
  • Importers: For buyers in the Middle East and Africa, current Indian 1509 and 1121 offers present an opportunity to lock in volumes before any rebound driven by restocking or policy changes.
  • Producers: Farmers with storage capacity may benefit from grading and holding better-quality 1509 parcels for a post-harvest window when arrivals taper and export demand normalizes.

3‑Day Directional Price View (EUR, indicative)

  • New Delhi FOB 1509 steam: Slightly bearish bias; additional small declines possible as more new-crop rice reaches the market.
  • New Delhi FOB 1121 steam: Mostly stable to mildly weaker, tracking basmati complex but cushioned by quality premium.
  • Vietnam long-grain 5% FOB: Largely steady in EUR terms, with Indian basmati-specific softness not yet spilling over meaningfully into non-basmati Asia export benchmarks.
