Rapeseed defies record crop: logistics and meal demand drive firmness

Rapeseed prices stay firm as record 2026/27 production meets Black Sea export disruptions, low Rhine levels and surging meal demand in Asia.

Rapeseed futures are holding firm despite a record global production outlook, supported by severe export and logistics disruptions in the Black Sea and on key European rivers, as well as stronger-than-expected meal demand in Southeast Asia. Nearby MATIF rapeseed hovers in the mid‑EUR 500s per tonne while ICE canola has jumped almost 3%, underlining a market that is tight in logistics rather than in pure supply. The market is navigating an unusual mix of burdensome headline balances and acute regional bottlenecks. USDA’s latest projections point to a record 2026/27 rapeseed crop led by larger Canadian output, yet flows from the Black Sea are constrained by recent drone attacks on Russia’s Novorossiysk export hub and continued strikes on Ukrainian ports. At the same time, critically low water levels on the Rhine and Danube are inflating inland freight costs, while brisk growth in rapeseed meal use in Vietnam and Indonesia is absorbing more seed for crushing. Physical offers in Ukraine remain discounted versus EU FOB values but have stabilised in recent days, reflecting firmer futures and expensive logistics.

Prices

On Euronext, the front rapeseed contract for November 2026 last traded around EUR 545.50/t, with the February and May 2027 positions clustered at about EUR 547–548/t. Later 2027–28 contracts ease towards EUR 522–523/t, indicating a modest carry but also a relatively flat forward curve for a market facing record crops.

ICE canola has moved more aggressively: the November 2026 contract settled near CAD 819/t, up roughly 1.9% on the day, with the curve into mid‑2027 trading around CAD 835/t. Converted to EUR, this puts nearby canola close to MATIF levels, reinforcing the linkage between the two markets. In the physical market, Ukrainian rapeseed FCA Odesa and Kyiv has stabilised around EUR 450–460/t equivalent, while French FOB Paris offers are indicated near EUR 670/t, preserving a wide East–West differential.

Supply & Demand

USDA has lifted its 2026/27 world rapeseed production estimate by 0.5 million tonnes to 99.08 million tonnes. This would exceed 2025/26 output by 3.4 million tonnes and stand roughly 13 million tonnes above 2024/25, underscoring a fundamentally well‑supplied outlook. Canada plays a key role, with canola production now forecast 0.5 million tonnes higher at 22.5 million tonnes, in line with earlier indications of expanding seeded area and better yields.

Yet this ample supply is not fully reaching the market. Drone attacks over the past week have severely disrupted Russia’s main Black Sea grain hub at Novorossiysk, forcing terminals that handle a large share of the country’s grain exports to suspend operations. At the same time, Ukrainian Danube and Black Sea ports continue to suffer capacity losses from recurring strikes, and alternative routes via rail and smaller ports are expected to cover only about half of the pre‑war export volume at best. These constraints disproportionately affect rapeseed and other oilseeds in the Black Sea export mix.

Fundamentals: Crushing & Meal Demand

The processing side has turned more supportive. Rapeseed meal demand in Vietnam has been revised sharply higher, with 2025/26 consumption raised from 304,000 to 444,000 tonnes (+46%) and 2026/27 projected at 425,000 tonnes instead of 255,000 tonnes (+67%). In Indonesia, the adjustment is even more striking: 2025/26 rapeseed meal use has been lifted from 50,000 to 220,000 tonnes, a more than four‑fold increase.

This incremental demand is expected to be covered entirely by higher imports, mainly from China and Canada, tightening the tradable balance of rapeseed and canola in the Pacific basin. The strong performance of ICE canola futures compared with the already firm MATIF structure suggests crushers anticipate continued competition for seed and meal, despite record crops. Combined with ongoing logistical chokepoints, this helps explain why prices at both exchanges remain elevated relative to historical levels for such a comfortable headline balance.

Logistics & Weather

Logistics have become a key bullish driver. Recent drone attacks have not only halted major grain terminals at Novorossiysk but also raised security premia and insurance costs for Black Sea routes more broadly, slowing the pace at which Russian and potentially Ukrainian seed can reach world markets. Within Ukraine, ongoing strikes on Danube and Black Sea facilities continue to disrupt rapeseed loadings and create uncertainty for exporters and buyers alike.

In Europe, very low water levels on the Rhine and Danube are constraining barge drafts and sharply increasing inland freight costs. Reports from river transport and cruising operators highlight near 80‑year‑low flows at the Dutch–German border, with the crucial Kaub gauge in Germany at critically low readings that limit barge loading to roughly 20–30% of capacity. For rapeseed, this means higher costs to move seed from interior origins to crush plants and export terminals, adding a firm basis component in Germany, France, and surrounding regions.

Weather Snapshot

The 2026/27 EU rapeseed crop has generally benefited from a good start and overall favourable growing conditions, supporting expectations for another strong harvest after recent years of recovery. In Canada, recent USDA and national statistics still point to a robust canola crop, albeit with local variability in the Prairies due to episodic dryness and heat earlier in the season.

Short‑term European weather offers some relief for river levels, with showers forecast in parts of the Rhine and Danube catchments, but not enough to normalise flows quickly. Given current record‑low levels and the lag between rainfall and navigable depth recovery, elevated freight costs and occasional shipping restrictions are likely to persist in the coming weeks, keeping a weather‑logistics risk premium embedded in regional rapeseed values.

Trading Outlook

  • Producers (EU/Black Sea): Consider scaling in sales on rallies towards the upper EUR 540–560/t range on MATIF Nov 26, but retain some exposure to potential further logistics‑driven spikes, particularly if Black Sea disruptions intensify or river levels fall further.
  • Crushers: Lock in a portion of seed coverage for Q4 2026–Q1 2027 while the futures curve remains relatively flat and physical Ukrainian premiums are still attractive. Prioritise logistics flexibility (rail and truck options) to mitigate river‑shipping constraints.
  • Importers in Asia: Given the sharp upward revisions to rapeseed meal demand in Vietnam and Indonesia, consider forward‑booking part of 2026/27 meal requirements from Canada and Europe, as competition for flexible supply chains may tighten basis later in the marketing year.
  • Speculators: The market is caught between heavy global supplies and acute export bottlenecks; option strategies that monetise volatility (e.g. selling out‑of‑the‑money puts against long futures) may suit traders expecting elevated but range‑bound prices.

3‑Day Directional View (EUR)

  • MATIF Rapeseed (Nov 26): Bias slightly higher in the next 3 days, with support around EUR 535/t and resistance near EUR 555/t as the market digests Black Sea news and river‑level updates.
  • ICE Canola (nearby, EUR‑equiv.): Mild upside tendency following the recent 2–3% rally, but vulnerable to consolidation if risk sentiment eases.
  • Physical Ukraine (FCA Odesa/Kyiv): Sideways to marginally firmer; export constraints and freight costs support local bids, but record global crop expectations cap strong gains.
