Rapeseed edges higher on Rhine logistics squeeze and firm canola
EU rapeseed prices remain firm as Rhine low water tightens logistics, while Canadian canola and Ukrainian offers cap gains. Concise outlook and trading ideas.
Prices
Front Euronext (MATIF) rapeseed for November 2026 trades around EUR 526/t, with the February 2027 contract near EUR 528/t, indicating a broadly flat nearby curve. Further out, prices ease modestly toward EUR 488–505/t for late-2028 expiries, hinting at expectations of comfortable medium-term supply.
In the German cash market, rapeseed values on Thursday advanced by roughly EUR 9/t, reaching EUR 511–531/t for deliveries in the first half of August, supported by transport bottlenecks rather than yield concerns. Canadian canola futures in Winnipeg closed higher for the third consecutive session, with the key November contract at CAD 768.90/t, adding a mild bullish external signal from North America.
Supply & Demand
EU rapeseed production in 2026/27 is expected to be broadly stable around 20.4–20.7 million tonnes, with slightly higher acreage offset by more average yields after a dry spring and patchy weather during harvest. France, Germany, Poland and Romania remain the dominant producers, together accounting for roughly three quarters of EU output.
Globally, rapeseed and canola production for 2026/27 is projected at a new record near 97 million tonnes, with gains in the EU, Ukraine and Russia, while Canadian output is stable and Australian production declines from last year. This solid supply picture caps longer-term price expectations despite current European logistics issues. EU rapeseed crush is also set to edge higher on continued biodiesel and food oil demand, keeping import needs elevated and linking EU prices closely to Black Sea and Canadian availability.
In Canada, canola crops are generally developing well, though a wet spring has increased disease pressure in some regions. This has not yet translated into major yield losses but remains a risk into late summer. In Ukraine, competitive export offers in the range of EUR 460–495/t over July and early August point to ample supply and an active export program, which helps anchor EU import parity despite regional freight disruptions.
Logistics & Weather
Exceptionally low water levels on the Rhine have become a central short-term driver of the European rapeseed market. Recent measurements in Cologne and at the German–Dutch border show record-low river levels, forcing barges to run at sharply reduced loads and raising transport costs for oilseeds, oils and meals along this key corridor.
Restrictions on navigation are already affecting fuel supply chains in parts of the Netherlands and Germany, with barges reportedly operating at around 25% of normal capacity on several interconnected waterways. For rapeseed, this translates into firmer basis levels at Rhine-adjacent crushing plants and terminals, as buyers secure nearby volumes despite elevated inland freight. Short-term weather forecasts suggest continued hot, dry conditions over much of central Europe through the coming week, providing limited relief for river levels and thus likely extending logistics-related price support.
Fundamentals & Market Balance
Fundamentally, the rapeseed market is moving into 2026/27 with relatively comfortable projected stocks in the EU, as ending inventories are seen only slightly below last year at around 2.2 million tonnes. At the same time, global rapeseed crush is forecast to rise by nearly 3 million tonnes to about 92 million tonnes, reflecting steady growth in demand for vegetable oils and protein meals.
Speculative interest has recently shifted back to the oilseed complex amid extreme European weather and river transport issues, but the absence of pronounced yield losses in Canada and the EU limits the scope for a sustained price spike. The structure of the MATIF curve – firm nearby and gently lower forward – underlines a market that is tight in the short run because of logistics and localized basis strength, while expecting adequate global supply later in the season.
Trading Outlook
- Producers (EU): Current German cash levels around EUR 511–531/t still offer attractive margins; consider incremental sales on rallies, especially if local basis surges further due to Rhine constraints.
- Crushers: Short-term, prioritize securing nearby physical coverage in Rhine-dependent regions, even at higher basis, while looking to hedge margin risk via Euronext futures against potential easing of logistics premiums later.
- Importers/Consumers: Use competitive Ukrainian and, where feasible, Canadian canola offers to diversify origin risk; scale in coverage on any dips triggered by improved river levels or clearer confirmation of strong Northern Hemisphere yields.
- Speculators: The risk/reward skews towards range trading: logistics-driven spikes above current futures levels may be opportunities to fade, given the broadly comfortable 2026/27 global balance.
3‑Day Directional Outlook (EUR)
- Euronext MATIF rapeseed: Mildly firm bias; logistics still supportive, but upside likely limited without new weather or crop shocks.
- Germany cash (Rhine corridor): Steady to slightly higher; persistent low water should keep basis elevated.
- Black Sea / Ukrainian offers: Slight downside to sideways; strong global supply and active selling keep pressure on FOB/FCA values.
