Rapeseed flat in Ukraine, softer in France as Black Sea risks meet harvest pressure
Concise rapeseed market update for France and Ukraine: price moves, Black Sea risk premium, supply fundamentals and 3-day outlook in EUR.
Prices

French rapeseed futures on Euronext (nearby contracts) are trading around the low–mid 500 EUR/t range, slightly below April highs, consistent with the mild softening seen in physical FOB values out of France in recent weeks. In Ukraine, internal prices are constrained by damaged export capacity and higher logistics costs, with local bids remaining well below EU levels despite a growing geopolitical risk premium on Black Sea flows.
Supply & Demand drivers (FR, UA)
France (FR)
Recent European reports point to broadly adequate rapeseed availability for the 2026/27 season, after several years of recovery in EU plantings and stable yields. This comfortable balance caps upside, even as crude oil and biodiesel sentiment remain volatile. In the short term, harvest progress and farmer selling are the main price drivers, with little sign of acute tightness.
Weather in key French rapeseed regions has turned seasonally stable in mid-August, with no extreme heat or excessive rainfall reported over the last few days, limiting additional weather risk for the already-harvested crop and supporting normal logistics to French ports. (Inference based on absence of recent weather-stress headlines in France-focused agricultural coverage.)
Ukraine (UA)
Ukraine remains a major exporter of rapeseed and other oilseeds, but export capacity is sharply constrained. Ports in the Greater Odesa hub, which handle most agricultural exports, are under renewed attack, and alternative land and Danube routes are expected to cover at best around half of normal volumes by late August. Ukrainian officials now warn that total agricultural exports for 2026/27 could fall by more than 50% versus earlier expectations because of the blockade and strikes on port infrastructure.
At the same time, Ukrainian rapeseed farmers face strong pressure to sell into a buyers’ market: export bottlenecks, higher internal transport costs and limited on-farm liquidity are forcing some to accept prices well below full production cost. This explains why Ukrainian FCA and CPT prices trade at a deep discount to French FOB, despite similar underlying global oilseed fundamentals.
Weather across central and southern Ukraine, including Kyiv and Odesa regions, has been seasonally warm and mostly dry in recent days, without major reported damage to rapeseed already harvested or in late stages of field operations. (Inference from lack of weather-stress alerts in current regional coverage.) Logistics and security, rather than yield risk, remain the key constraints.
Fundamentals & external influences
- Black Sea risk premium: A surge in missile and drone attacks has hit both Ukrainian and Russian Black Sea grain terminals, with Novorossiysk and Odesa/Danube infrastructure suffering repeated disruptions. This raises freight and insurance costs and supports a structural risk premium for EU rapeseed, but the impact is partly offset by weaker internal Ukrainian basis levels.
- EU balance still comfortable: EU dashboards and recent reports continue to show relatively balanced rapeseed stocks and production for 2025/26–2026/27, suggesting no imminent shortage despite lower Ukrainian flows.
- Vegetable oil complex: Global oilseed and vegetable oil prices are being shaped by soy and palm developments; recent data indicate moderate levels rather than an extreme bull phase, which keeps rapeseed rallies in check despite geopolitical headlines.
- Policy & corridor talks: Kyiv has signaled willingness to halt attacks on civilian shipping in the Black Sea if Russia reciprocates, highlighting the market’s binary risk around any de-escalation or further escalation of sea attacks.
Short-term outlook & trading takeaways
Weather outlook (3–5 days, FR & UA)
- France: No major disruptive weather is expected in key rapeseed areas in the very short term; normal temperatures and light precipitation should allow smooth logistics and loading at French ports.
- Ukraine: Seasonal summer conditions in central and southern regions (Kyiv, Odesa) are forecast to persist, with no widespread extremes currently flagged in regional reports; logistical security remains a much bigger risk factor than weather.
Trading outlook
- For crushers in the EU: The current FR–UA spread offers continued opportunities to blend cheaper Ukrainian rapeseed where logistics and sanctions compliance allow. Consider locking in part of Q4 coverage on dips, while retaining some upside exposure to further Black Sea disruptions.
- For Ukrainian producers & exporters: With export capacity constrained and local prices already compressed, aggressive forward selling at current levels looks unattractive unless storage or financing is severely limited. Focus on flexible sales linked to any improvement in corridor access or Danube capacity.
- For traders: Monitor Black Sea headlines closely. Additional damage to ports or failed truce attempts could quickly widen FR–UA spreads and push Euronext prices higher, while any credible de-escalation or EU support on logistics could cap near-term rallies.
3-day directional price view (EUR)
- France, FOB Paris: Slight downside bias (−5 to −10 EUR/t) as harvest pressure continues and no fresh bullish catalyst is visible in the next few days.
- Ukraine, FCA Kyiv/Odesa: Broadly sideways (±5 EUR/t). Local demand and storage constraints argue against significant upside in the very near term, but further port attacks could trigger risk-on bids for exportable parcels.
