Rapeseed Futures Hold High Ground as Ukrainian Export Demand Stays Firm
Rapeseed futures stay elevated on Euronext while Ukrainian export demand remains strong. Analysis of prices, fundamentals, weather and a short-term trading outlook.
Prices
Euronext rapeseed is holding near recent highs: November 2026 trades at about EUR 557.5/t, with February and May 2027 close at EUR 559–558/t and new-crop August 2027 around EUR 525.5/t, indicating only a modest discount between old and new crop. The 2028 strip fluctuates between roughly EUR 493–526/t, reflecting expectations of slightly more comfortable supply further out.
ICE canola, in contrast, has seen a modest technical correction. November 2026 canola closed near CAD 832/t on 9 September, down around CAD 7/t or 0.8% day-on-day as chart-based selling set in after previous gains. Even after this pullback, Winnipeg prices remain historically firm and continue to provide a bullish reference for global rapeseed values.
In physical trade, recent export offers from Ukraine show FCA Odesa and Kyiv rapeseed with 42% oil at about EUR 0.46–0.48/kg, while CPT Odesa grade‑1 seed is quoted near EUR 0.447/kg. French FOB Paris values are indicated around EUR 0.65/kg, underscoring the price premium for EU origin over Black Sea seed but leaving arbitrage windows into European crushers largely open.
Supply & Demand
Short term, export demand for Ukrainian rapeseed remains robust. In August, Ukraine shipped roughly 292,600 t of seed and 95,400 t of rapeseed oil; combined, this equals about 520,000 t in seed equivalent. With a 2026 crop estimated near 3.7–3.8 mln t, nearly 14% of the harvest has already moved into export channels, with EU crushers the key buyers.
Analysts expect strong Ukrainian shipments to continue through September and October, before seasonal switching of local processors to sunflower and soybeans gradually reduces domestic rapeseed demand. In the EU, a larger 2026/27 rapeseed crop compared with previous years is offset by resilient biodiesel and feed demand, so import needs remain material. Recent data show that high Canadian canola prices keep Ukrainian origin particularly competitive into Europe, reinforcing Black Sea flows despite ongoing logistical constraints.
Globally, preliminary 2026/27 balances still point to a bigger rapeseed and canola crop compared with the previous year, but stocks are not expected to rebuild dramatically. Forecasts highlight that the EU, while harvesting a stronger crop, is likely to maintain a notable import requirement due to steady crush and biodiesel mandates, limiting any pronounced surplus.
Fundamentals & Weather
Fundamentals currently argue for a sideways-to-firm bias. On the one hand, Euronext futures structure shows only a shallow discount between November 2026 and the following crop years, suggesting that merchants and crushers still need to bid for seed rather than being comfortable with future supply. On the other hand, recent gains in rapeseed and canola have triggered some technical selling, particularly on ICE, tempering the bullish momentum.
Weather-wise, European crops reached maturity earlier than usual this season as above-average temperatures accelerated development. Harvest is now largely completed in key EU producers, shifting the market focus from yield risk to logistics, crush margins and policy. In Canada, canola yields look mixed but broadly in line with expectations, with markets now reacting more to demand and chart signals than to weather headlines.
In Ukraine, the rapeseed harvest is practically finished, and the main uncertainty lies in export logistics through Black Sea and Danube ports. While attacks and infrastructure constraints remain a structural risk for flows, current export data show that rapeseed is still finding its way to market, especially into the EU, helping to cap any explosive price upside but offering a strong floor as long as EU demand persists.
Trading Outlook
- Producers (EU, Ukraine): With November 2026 Euronext near EUR 555–560/t and Black Sea FCA at EUR 460–480/t equivalent, consider incremental hedging of additional volumes, especially for 2027 crop, while keeping some upside exposure in case of new logistical disruptions or energy-led rallies.
- Crushers: Maintain a disciplined coverage strategy for Q4 2026–Q1 2027; current flat-price levels are not cheap but still justified by strong biodiesel margins. Look for technical corrections in ICE canola and Euronext rapeseed as opportunities to extend coverage rather than chase spikes.
- Traders: The tight nearby versus modest new-crop discount favours relative value plays along the curve rather than outright directional bets. Spreads between EU and Black Sea origins should continue to reward efficient logistics and quality management.
3-Day Price Direction Outlook
- Euronext Paris rapeseed (front Nov 2026): Slightly firm to sideways; range trade expected around EUR 550–565/t with dips likely met by commercial buying.
- ICE canola (Nov 2026): Mildly soft bias after the recent technical correction; further small downside possible, but strong vegoil complex should limit losses.
- Black Sea physical (Ukraine FCA/CPT): Stable to slightly firmer, supported by solid export demand and only gradual farmer selling as attention shifts to sunflower and soybean marketing.
