Rapeseed holds firm as soy complex eases and EU oil demand stays supportive
Rapeseed prices on MATIF stay supported by tight EU seed imports and strong rapeseed oil exports, despite pressure from weaker soy and canola futures.
Prices
Nearby Euronext (MATIF) rapeseed for November 2026 last traded around EUR 534.75/t, with new‑crop November 2027 near EUR 516.50/t, indicating only a modest carry along the curve. Further out, August 2028 is priced around EUR 490.75/t, reflecting expectations of more comfortable supplies but still historically elevated levels for forward years.
In the physical market, recent offers translate roughly to EUR 680/t FOB Paris for French rapeseed and about EUR 460–495/t equivalent for Ukrainian origin, depending on location and terms. This keeps cash premiums over MATIF relatively contained, suggesting crushers are adequately covered in the short term but must still pay up for EU origin, in line with tighter local seed availability.
Supply & Demand
Rapeseed trading on Euronext was pressured on Tuesday by weaker Chicago soybeans and soya oil, as improved weather in the US Midwest boosted yield prospects and triggered selling across the oilseed complex. However, rising crude oil prices helped to cap losses, underpinning biodiesel margins and thus demand for rapeseed oil.
Fundamentally, the European rapeseed market remains supported by low seed imports and strong oil flows. From 1 July to 11 August, the EU imported around 262,000 t of rapeseed, 22% less than in the same period a year earlier. Over the same window, EU rapeseed oil exports reached 97,000 t, up 34% year‑on‑year, while rapeseed oil imports increased 32% to 19,000 t. This pattern of constrained seed inflows but rising oil trade underscores firm crush demand and a relatively tight regional balance.
Fundamentals & External Drivers
ICE Canada canola futures in Winnipeg followed the weaker soya oil market and posted double‑digit losses in local currency on 11 August. Good weather conditions for canola in Canada contributed to the downside, adding a bearish external signal for rapeseed. Nonetheless, the impact on MATIF has so far been moderate, with European contracts showing resilience thanks to domestic demand factors.
In the US, traders are positioning ahead of the upcoming WASDE report from USDA, with expectations for slightly lower 2025/26 and 2026/27 soybean ending stocks. For now, improved Midwest weather, including milder temperatures and ample rainfall during the key pod‑setting phase, has eased immediate supply concerns and weighed on soybeans. For rapeseed, this combination of softer soy and canola versus still‑tight EU seed availability translates into a more range‑bound, spread‑driven market rather than a clear directional trend.
Outlook & Trading View
Short‑term, the rapeseed market is likely to continue trading inside a consolidation band, with MATIF November 2026 anchored by EU import tightness and rapeseed oil demand, but capped by the broader softness in the global oilseed complex. The nearby focus will remain on the WASDE release and subsequent moves in soybeans and soya oil, as well as any changes in crude oil prices that would alter biodiesel economics.
Weather conditions in key producing regions are currently not a major threat: US soybeans benefit from timely rains, and Canadian canola is enjoying good growing weather, pointing to adequate global oilseed availability. As a result, any upside in rapeseed is likely to require either a renewed rally in energy markets, a negative surprise on global oilseed yields, or further evidence of persistent EU import shortfalls.
- Producers: Use current firmness above EUR 530/t on nearby MATIF to hedge a portion of 2026/27 output; retain some volume unpriced to benefit from potential energy‑driven rallies.
- Crushers: Consider extending coverage on dips toward EUR 510–515/t for Nov 2026, given tight EU seed imports and robust oil export flows.
- End‑users/traders: Monitor soy–rapeseed and canola–rapeseed spreads; relative value opportunities may emerge if North American harvest pressure deepens while EU fundamentals stay tight.
3‑day directional outlook (EUR, futures focus)
- MATIF Rapeseed (Nov 2026): Slightly lower to sideways; expected to hold mostly in the EUR 525–540/t range.
- ICE Canola (nearby, EUR‑equivalent): Downside bias as good Canadian weather and recent selling persist.
- Physical EU rapeseed (FOB FR/DE): Largely steady, with small basis adjustments following futures and crude oil moves.
