Euronext rapeseed holds firm around EUR 493–552/t while ICE canola eases on harvest pressure. Overview of prices, supply-demand, weather risks and near-term outlook.

Rapeseed futures on Euronext are holding steady near recent highs, while ICE canola has retreated under seasonal harvest pressure. Physical rapeseed indications in France and Ukraine are broadly stable to slightly softer, reflecting comfortable nearby supply but ongoing risk premiums for weather and logistics. European rapeseed prices remain underpinned by tight old-crop stocks and cautious farmer selling, even as biofuel demand begins to normalise. In contrast, Canadian canola is facing increased producer deliveries and weaker technicals, but remains historically elevated. Weather is turning more critical for the new European winter rapeseed crop establishment, especially in drier parts of central and south‑eastern Europe. Overall, rapeseed fundamentals look balanced, with limited downside near term unless crude oil and vegetable oils turn decisively lower.

Prices

On Euronext (MATIF), nearby rapeseed futures are flat day-on-day: November 2026 trades at EUR/t 493.25, with the forward curve rising into mid-2027 (February 2027 EUR/t 546.50, May 2027 EUR/t 551.50). More deferred months ease back towards the high 470s–530s, with August 2028 at EUR/t 473.50 and November 2028 at EUR/t 487.00, signalling expectations of more comfortable long‑term supply.

ICE canola futures have weakened over recent sessions. November 2026 closed at CAD/t 787.00 on 19 October after a 1.5% daily drop, extending a roughly 4–5% pullback over the past month as seasonal harvest pressure and steady farmer selling weighed on prices. Midday trade on 19 October showed further softness, with November quoted around CAD/t 788.20, pressured by a firmer Canadian dollar and weaker competing vegetable oils.

In the physical market, recent quotations in EUR show modest softness in France and mixed moves in Ukraine:

  • France, Paris, rapeseeds FOB: EUR 0.63/kg (down from EUR 0.64/kg on 16 October).
  • Ukraine, Odesa, rapeseeds grade 1 < 35 mcm CPT: EUR 0.401/kg (unchanged vs. 16 October after earlier declines).
  • Ukraine, Odesa, rapeseeds 42% min oil 98% FCA: EUR 0.46/kg (stable in recent weeks).
  • Ukraine, Kyiv, rapeseeds 42% min oil 98% FCA: EUR 0.45/kg (stable in recent weeks).
These levels confirm a broadly steady but slightly softer tone in spot origination, in contrast to the still‑firm futures structure.

Supply & Demand

European rapeseed fundamentals remain relatively tight in the short term. Old‑crop stocks are low after a smaller EU rapeseed harvest and solid demand from the biodiesel sector, which continues to rely heavily on rapeseed oil. Recent analysis highlights that EU rapeseed imports are easing as biofuel producers diversify into Australian and Canadian feedstocks, especially rapeseed oil, shifting some demand away from seed imports but maintaining strong overall pull for the complex.

In Canada, canola supply is increasingly visible as harvest advances. Seasonal pressure is building from accelerating producer deliveries to commercial channels, with recent reports pointing to higher crop‑year‑to‑date deliveries versus last year and fresh seven‑week lows in futures earlier in October. Nonetheless, prices remain historically high on a one‑year and year‑to‑date basis, underlining that global oilseed buyers still perceive canola/rapeseed balance sheets as relatively snug.

On the demand side, Chinese buying interest has shifted more strongly towards Australian canola, adding competition for Canadian origins and slightly moderating the premium structure. EU biodiesel mandates and decarbonisation policies continue to anchor baseline demand for rapeseed oil, but any future policy tightening on crop‑based biofuels could alter that trajectory. For now, crushers’ margins remain adequate, with Canadian board margins still comfortably positive, supporting steady crush activity.

Weather & Crop Conditions

Weather is increasingly important for the establishment of the 2027 European winter rapeseed crop. Recent European crop monitoring points to overly dry conditions in parts of south‑western and south‑eastern Europe, which are constraining winter rapeseed emergence and early development. In contrast, more northerly regions have faced excess moisture that has delayed some field operations but generally support adequate soil moisture.

In Western Canada, canola harvest has benefited from generally favourable weather, allowing combining and deliveries to pick up and reinforcing the current harvest‑pressure narrative on ICE canola prices. Over the coming days, forecasts suggest continued seasonally cool but mostly dry conditions across major Prairie canola belts, which should allow harvest to progress further and maintain near‑term supply pressure.

Fundamentals & Market Drivers

The current MATIF rapeseed curve, with nearby November 2026 at EUR/t 493.25 and peak values above EUR/t 550 for mid‑2027, suggests a market still pricing moderate risk premiums for future tightness, possibly linked to weather and policy uncertainty. Stable physical bids in Ukraine and France show that crushers and exporters are broadly covered in the short term, but are not yet willing to chase additional volume at higher prices.

For canola, a combination of technical weakness, stronger currency and pressure from comparable vegetable oils (soyoil, palm) has triggered a correction. However, medium‑term support stems from robust demand from China, the EU and other key importers, as well as limited prospects for a rapid expansion in global oilseed area given agronomic and rotation constraints.

Macro factors remain a wild card. Movements in crude oil prices will feed into biodiesel margins and discretionary blending, while broader risk sentiment can amplify or dampen speculative positioning in rapeseed and canola futures. For now, there is no clear macro shock, leaving weather and harvest data as the dominant near‑term catalysts.

Outlook & Trading Ideas

Near-term bias (next 1–2 weeks): neutral to slightly soft for ICE canola, broadly steady to mildly firm for Euronext rapeseed, assuming no major shift in energy or vegoil markets.

  • Producers (EU/Ukraine): Consider scaling in sales on strength towards the upper end of the current MATIF range (around the mid‑500s EUR/t for 2027 positions), while keeping some exposure in case weather issues further tighten new‑crop prospects.
  • Crushers: Use current stability in physical rapeseed offers (EUR 0.401–0.63/kg range depending on origin and terms) to extend coverage modestly into Q1 2027, especially where logistics or quality pose potential risks.
  • Importers/End‑users: For canola, consider staggered buying to take advantage of harvest‑related dips below recent averages, but avoid over‑hedging given still‑elevated historical levels and potential for further seasonal weakness.
  • Speculative traders: The relative spread of firm MATIF rapeseed versus softer ICE canola could offer opportunities, but beware of weather‑driven volatility in European winter rapeseed establishment.
