Rapeseed Market Holds Firm as EU Crop Risks Offset Ukrainian Flow
Concise July 2026 rapeseed market analysis: MATIF flat but backwardated, EU crop risks, strong Ukrainian exports and short-term price outlook in EUR.
Prices
On July 20, 2026, Euronext Paris rapeseed futures closed unchanged, with Aug 2026 at about EUR 557/t, Nov 2026 at EUR 559/t and Feb 2027 at EUR 556/t, indicating a stable but elevated nearby price zone. Further out, the curve softens markedly: Aug 2027 trades around EUR 510/t and out to Nov 2028 near EUR 498/t, underlining clear backwardation and a market that prices current tightness more than long-term scarcity.
Physical offers mirror this structure. Recent Ukraine FCA bids are about EUR 510–520/t-equivalent for 42% oil rapeseed in Odesa and Kyiv, while grade-1 CPT Odesa indications hover near EUR 480–485/t, slightly below early-July highs. French FOB Paris offers sit higher at roughly EUR 680/t and have been broadly steady in recent weeks, underlining the premium for EU origin relative to Ukrainian supplies.
Supply & Demand Drivers
EU rapeseed supply for 2026/27 is increasingly seen as tighter than previously expected. Private and institutional estimates point to an EU crop potentially slipping below 20 million tonnes in a downside scenario, after spring cold spells and early-summer heat waves trimmed yield potential in parts of central and eastern Europe. This contrasts with a still-solid demand outlook for biodiesel and food oils, reducing projected ending stocks and justifying the current risk premium in nearby MATIF contracts.
Ukraine, by contrast, is delivering very strong export flows early in the marketing year. In the first half of July alone, outbound shipments reportedly exceeded 430,000 tonnes, with logistics increasingly routed via western land borders and alternative ports rather than the most exposed Black Sea terminals. Government minimum export price benchmarks were lowered in mid-July, but physical CPT port prices have remained comparatively firm, signalling resilient external demand even amid regional security disruptions affecting grain and oilseed corridors.
Fundamentals & Weather
Fundamental balances are shaped by a combination of modestly reduced EU production, strong Ukrainian availability, and stable crush margins. Recent international analysis highlights that while the EU rapeseed crop entered winter in good condition, cumulative dryness and episodic frost during flowering have pulled yields back from earlier optimistic expectations. Still, current projections do not yet suggest a severe shortfall, but rather a tighter, more finely balanced market compared with prior years.
Weather prospects for late July and early August are mixed. EU short-term outlooks signal generally favourable conditions overall, though with persistent local moisture deficits in parts of central and south-eastern Europe and the emerging risk of below-average rainfall later in the season linked to a developing El Niño. For rapeseed, much of the main EU harvest occurs in July, so yield risk is gradually transitioning into quality and logistics risk, especially if intermittent rains disrupt fieldwork or transport.
Trading Outlook
- Producers (EU & Ukraine): Use the current backwardated MATIF curve to lock in attractive nearby levels for a portion of 2026 crop, but retain some price exposure given ongoing weather and geopolitical risks. Consider incremental hedging rather than large one-off sales.
- Crushers: Nearby flat futures and firm physicals argue for disciplined coverage: secure core raw-material needs through harvest, but avoid over-buying into Q1–Q2 2027 where futures already price some easing. Monitor EU yield updates and Ukrainian export flows closely for additional buying windows.
- Traders: The persistent MATIF–Black Sea and MATIF–French FOB spreads offer origin-switching opportunities. Tight logistics and security risks around the Black Sea, however, demand conservative freight and risk premia, particularly for longer-dated positions.
3-Day Price Indication (Direction)
- MATIF rapeseed (Aug & Nov 2026): Sideways to slightly firm in EUR, with weather headlines and Black Sea logistics the key short-term catalysts.
- Ukraine FCA/CPT (Odesa, Kyiv): Largely stable in EUR, with only mild downside risk if harvest pace accelerates and export logistics remain functional.
- French FOB Paris: Steady at a premium to futures and Black Sea; limited room for near-term downside unless EU crop estimates improve materially.
