Concise rapeseed market analysis covering MATIF and ICE futures, EU supply-demand, Black Sea basis, weather risks, and a short-term trading outlook.
Prices
On Euronext, November 2026 rapeseed last traded at EUR 502.00/t, with deferred February 2027 at EUR 555.75/t and May 2027 at EUR 559.25/t, indicating a still pronounced inverse from spot into early 2027. Further out, August 2027 stands at EUR 536.00/t and November 2027 at EUR 538.75/t, before easing towards EUR 466.75/t by August 2028 as the curve gradually flattens.
ICE canola futures reinforce the firm tone in the seed complex: November 2026 settled at CAD 816.70/t on 9 October with nearby contracts trading consistently above CAD 800/t over recent sessions. This strength contrasts with softer physical Black Sea quotations, where Ukrainian rapeseed FCA Odesa is indicated at EUR 0.46/kg and FCA Kyiv at EUR 0.45/kg, while CPT Odesa grade 1 is quoted at EUR 0.436/kg.

Supply & Demand
Latest EU market intelligence points to a smaller rapeseed crop and notably lower imports at the start of the current season, tightening seed availability for crushers compared with last year. UFOP highlights that EU rapeseed imports in the first quarter of the marketing year are significantly below the previous season, reflecting both reduced external supply and weaker import competitiveness at current price levels.
In Canada, canola production prospects are broadly stable, but speculative positioning has become more cautious after earlier weather concerns and bouts of profit-taking. For the EU, USDA’s mid-year outlook already flagged lower rapeseed output for MY 2026/27 due to dryness in parts of Western and Central Europe, with only partial compensation from slightly higher sown area. This combination of smaller domestic crop and reduced early imports helps explain the persistent inverse on MATIF.
On the demand side, EU crush is only marginally lower year-on-year, according to recent EU and USDA assessments, as biodiesel and feed sectors maintain relatively firm offtake despite some decarbonisation policy uncertainty. Rapeseed oil prices have been mostly firm month-on-month, supporting crushers’ margins and incentivising steady throughput, while meal prices remain competitive against alternative proteins.

Weather & Planting Outlook
European weather models for early October indicate a mixed picture for winter rapeseed sowing: Northwestern Europe is trending wetter and milder, improving soil moisture for establishment, while parts of Central and Eastern Europe retain rainfall deficits. So far, conditions are not severe enough to trigger a weather premium, but the market remains sensitive to any further dryness during emergence and early vegetative stages.
Earlier in the season, reports highlighted that the 2026 EU rapeseed harvest suffered from episodes of dry weather that trimmed yields despite acceptable acreage. Looking ahead, the key risk is a repeat of such dryness during spring 2027, which would tighten new-crop balances and could re-steepen the back end of the futures curve if current import restraint persists.
Fundamentals & Basis
The MATIF curve from November 2026 through February and May 2027 underscores tight nearby fundamentals, with a premium of over EUR 50/t from Nov 2026 to Feb 2027. This inverse reflects strong crush demand, low early-season imports, and cautious farmer selling after a less-than-ideal 2026 harvest. At the same time, the gradual softening into the 2028 contracts suggests the market expects partial supply recovery over the medium term.
Physical price indications confirm this structure: French rapeseed FOB Paris is steady at EUR 0.64/kg, having firmed from EUR 0.62/kg in late September, whereas Ukrainian CPT Odesa grade 1 has eased from EUR 0.458/kg on 28 September to EUR 0.436/kg by 7 October. This narrowing Black Sea basis points to stronger competition for EU crushers and traders, as logistics-normalised Ukrainian seed tries to attract demand in a market with constrained import appetite.
On the oil side, industry data from early October describe rapeseed oil as mostly firm over the month, in line with the resilient seed market and stable biodiesel blending demand. With no major collapse in rival vegetable oils and only modest meal weakness, crushers currently face little pressure to cut runs, which in turn keeps nearby seed demand underpinned.
Trading Outlook
- Producers (EU): The firm inverse between Nov 2026 and Feb–May 2027 argues for a staged selling approach, retaining some coverage into Q1 2027 in case lower imports and any weather scares reprice deferred contracts. Consider using MATIF call spreads rather than outright withholding physical for upside participation.
- Crushers: With physical French and Ukrainian values still attractive relative to ICE/MATIF futures, near-term coverage appears prudent, especially for Q1 2027. However, avoid over-committing into late 2027/28 where the curve already discounts some supply recovery.
- Traders: The EU–Black Sea basis deserves close monitoring as Ukrainian CPT values soften. Short basis/long futures structures into MATIF Feb–May 2027 may offer opportunities if import flows remain constrained but futures stay supported by crush demand.
3-Day Directional Outlook
- MATIF rapeseed (Nov 2026): Sideways to slightly firmer; tight nearby supply and strong inverse limit downside, but lack of fresh bullish catalysts caps rallies.
- ICE canola (Nov 2026): Mildly supportive bias above CAD 800/t as technicals remain constructive and external oilseed markets are stable.
- Physical EU/UA rapeseed: French FOB prices likely to remain steady; Ukrainian FCA/CPT indications may see marginal further softness if farmer selling accelerates and export logistics improve.
