Rapeseed futures ease with weaker vegoil and crude, while EU crop disappoints and Ukrainian and French physical prices stay relatively firm. Concise trading outlook.
Prices
At Euronext (MATIF), rapeseed futures are holding just under recent peaks. The November 2026 contract last traded around the mid-550 EUR/t area and is currently quoted at 549.75 EUR/t, with forward positions from February to May 2027 near 556–557 EUR/t, indicating only a shallow carry in the curve. Physical markets in Europe and Ukraine trade at a discount to futures but have recently firmed in the Black Sea region, limiting downside potential.
ICE canola has corrected lower, with November 2026 futures closing at 822.30 CAD/t on 18 September, down 1.4% on the day, in contrast to earlier sessions where Canadian contracts drew support from weather risks and a softer Canadian dollar.

Supply & Demand
Rapeseed fundamentals remain relatively tight. In the European Union, rapeseed production for 2026/27 has been revised down by the European Commission to about 19.8–20.5 million tonnes as dry spells and local frost damage reduced yields in parts of central and eastern Europe, despite initially promising crop conditions. Germany in particular harvested below expectations, while France and northern Germany benefited from some timely rains, leaving overall EU output roughly flat to slightly below last season.
On the demand side, EU rapeseed crush remains robust, underpinned by biodiesel mandates and stable food oil usage, which is tightening ending stocks. Globally, the oilseed complex is supported by strong US soybean export demand: by mid-September, US 2026/27 soybean export sales already cover around 20.63 million tonnes, more than double year-ago levels and fulfilling roughly 45% of USDA’s full-season export forecast, well above the five-year average pace. Large speculative net-long positions in Chicago soybeans, though modestly reduced from record highs, signal that investment money remains positioned for firm prices.
Canadian canola supply prospects are more weather-sensitive in the short term. Harvest delays and variable yields in the Prairies have alternated between supporting and capping prices, while export flows fluctuate week to week. In the Black Sea, Ukrainian rapeseed exports continue but logistics risks and higher transport costs keep local prices historically volatile, contributing to a firm floor under FOB and CPT indications.

Fundamentals & External Drivers
The broader vegetable oil complex has turned softer in recent sessions. Chicago soyoil and Malaysian palm oil have moved lower, dragging on Euronext rapeseed via relative value spread trading, while crude oil prices have also eased after hitting four-month highs earlier in the week. This combination triggered profit taking across oilseeds, including rapeseed, after a strong prior rally.
Nevertheless, the underlying sentiment in soybeans remains constructive thanks to exceptional US export demand and continuing concerns about global oilseed balance sheets. The most recent CFTC data show that money managers have trimmed, but not unwound, a record net-long in CBOT soybean futures and options, leaving the oilseed complex vulnerable to both short-term corrections and renewed surges if weather or logistics shocks emerge.
Weather remains a key swing factor. In Europe, spring drought and local frost episodes have already curtailed rapeseed yields in parts of central, eastern and southeastern member states, while timely rainfall cushioned losses elsewhere. In Canada, unsettled conditions during harvest periods have contributed to canola price resilience when global oils or currencies turn supportive.
Short-Term Outlook & Trading Ideas
- Producers (EU, Ukraine): With MATIF November 2026 consolidating in the mid-550 EUR/t region and physical premiums in Ukraine and France relatively firm, consider incremental sales on rallies toward the upper end of the recent range, especially where storage is limited or quality risks remain.
- Crushers: Maintain active hedging on input cover while monitoring soy-palm spreads; any further dip in rapeseed futures driven by weaker crude or vegoils may offer opportunities to extend coverage, given tighter EU balance sheets.
- Importers/Consumers: Use current consolidation to layer in forward coverage, focusing on deferred positions where the carry remains modest and logistics from Black Sea origins are secure.
- Speculative traders: Rapeseed sits at the crossroads of strong oilseed fundamentals and softer energy; short-term volatility is likely. Look for mean-reversion trades around the 530–560 EUR/t MATIF band, with close attention to crude oil and soy complex price action.
3-Day Market Direction
- MATIF rapeseed: Slightly downward to sideways bias as long as crude oil and palm remain soft, with support expected above recent 530 EUR/t lows.
- ICE canola: Direction mixed; weather headlines and CAD moves could spark intraday swings, but recent weakness may limit aggressive selling near current levels.
- Black Sea physical rapeseed (Ukraine): Mildly firm tone expected as local prices have rebounded from early-September lows and logistics risk keeps sellers cautious.
