Rapeseed steadies as Black Sea shock collides with dry EU weather

Concise rapeseed price update: Euronext futures firm near EUR 550/t while French FOB holds and Ukrainian FCA lags amid severe Black Sea export disruption.

Physical rapeseed prices in France and Ukraine are broadly unchanged, even as futures in Paris grind higher and Black Sea logistics deteriorate. Tight old-crop EU supply, dry weather in parts of France and mounting disruption to Ukrainian export routes underpin the market, but harvest pressure and weak farmer selling in UA keep spot basis contained. Rapeseed futures on Euronext Paris are trading around EUR 545–555/t for the front contracts, having firmed modestly in recent sessions and sitting near the top of their weekly range. Domestic French physical values remain strongly supported versus Ukrainian FCA bids, reflecting freight, quality and risk premia. In Ukraine, the combination of blocked Odesa deep-sea ports and only partially scaled alternative routes is capping farmgate prices and delaying sales even as internal demand from crushers grows.

Prices

Euronext rapeseed has climbed to roughly EUR 550/t, up about 1–2% over the past week, driven by firmer vegetable oil markets and renewed concerns over Black Sea supplies. This contrasts with largely flat physical indications in our key origins, suggesting basis rather than outright futures is absorbing most of the current risk premium.

French FOB values around Paris are holding near EUR 670/t, while Ukrainian FCA bids in Kyiv and Odesa cluster in the low-to-mid EUR 400s/t equivalent, leaving a wide spread that reflects both logistics and quality. The relatively stable day-on-day picture indicates that the latest escalation in port risk is being watched rather than fully priced into cash markets.

Supply & Demand

EU rapeseed balances remain relatively tight, with Euronext futures underpinned by resilient biodiesel and crush demand, as well as competitive positioning versus other vegetable oils. France, as a core origin, is benefiting from this structural support, maintaining a notable premium to Black Sea cash levels.

In Ukraine, the 2026 rapeseed crop is estimated in the mid‑3 million tonne range, and structural demand from domestic processors is gradually replacing raw seed exports. However, severe disruption at Odesa ports and intensified Russian attacks on Black Sea shipping are expected to cut overall agricultural exports by around half this season, pushing more seed into storage or local crush and limiting immediate export availability.

Weather & Crop Conditions (FR, UA)

In France, soil moisture has been under pressure since June, and the latest national outlook highlights widespread drying, with only limited relief from recent cooler, more unsettled weather. While most rapeseed has been harvested, the dryness is becoming relevant for new‑season sowings and could constrain 2027 output if it persists into autumn.

Across Ukraine, short‑term forecasts point to seasonally warm but not extreme conditions in many central and western cropping areas, with scattered showers offering some relief after earlier heat. (Synthesis of regional forecasts over the past 72 hours.) This should support late-season oilseeds and field preparation, but ongoing conflict-related risks outweigh weather as the main driver of exportable surplus.

Fundamentals & Risk Drivers

  • Black Sea logistics shock: Merchant ship arrivals at Ukraine’s main Black Sea ports, including Odesa, have been heavily curtailed after intensified strikes, with officials and market analysts warning that grain and oilseed exports could be reduced by more than half versus previous plans.
  • Alternative corridors limited: Danube and overland routes are expanding but are expected to cover only around 50% of prior Black Sea volumes at best, keeping a cap on Ukrainian FOB values and encouraging storage or domestic processing rather than aggressive cash selling.
  • Macro & energy backdrop: EU outlooks flag modest economic growth but higher energy and biodiesel costs in 2026, supporting vegetable oil demand and sustaining a structural floor under rapeseed prices despite recent volatility.

Trading Outlook & 3‑Day Price View

  • For crushers & biodiesel plants (EU/FR): Consider maintaining or slightly increasing coverage on Q4–Q1 needs while futures hover around EUR 550/t, as the balance of risk is skewed to further tightening if Black Sea disruptions deepen or French sowing conditions worsen.
  • For exporters & traders (UA): Basis strategies remain key: targeting Danube or rail-linked buyers may yield better netbacks than Odesa-linked routes. Be cautious with forward commitments tied to Black Sea loading until navigation risks and insurance costs stabilise.
  • For farmers: With cash bids in Ukraine lagging futures gains, holding a portion of unsold seed or using paper hedges against Euronext can preserve upside while managing liquidity; in France, current premiums argue for incremental sales on further rallies towards EUR 560–570/t.

3‑day directional outlook (all in EUR):

  • Euronext rapeseed futures (Paris): Mildly bullish; expected to trade roughly in the EUR 540–560/t range, with an upward bias if new headlines confirm sustained port closures.
  • FR physical, Paris FOB: Stable to slightly firmer; likely to track futures with a steady premium, seen around EUR 665–680/t.
  • UA FCA Kyiv & Odesa: Largely stable; basis pressure from logistics constraints offsets futures strength, keeping bids roughly in the EUR 440–465/t corridor unless inland demand or storage capacity shift sharply.
