Rapeseed Supported by Strong Energy and Oilseed Complex Amid Hormuz Tensions
Rapeseed prices on Euronext hold firm as crude and vegetable oils rally on tightening global oil supply and Strait of Hormuz tensions. Concise market outlook.
Prices
Euronext rapeseed futures closed unchanged on August 12, 2026, but remain at elevated levels after recent gains:
The forward curve is only mildly inverse between Nov 2026 and mid-2027, then softens more clearly into late 2027–2028, signaling that current tightness is expected to ease over the medium term.
ICE canola futures in Canada moved sharply higher on August 12, with the nearby November 2026 contract settling at CAD 794.40/t, up 1.7% on the day, and the Jan–Jul 2027 strip also gaining more than 1% across the board. This rally adds external support to European rapeseed values by tightening global oilseed and vegetable oil spreads.
In the physical market, indicative offers converted to EUR show French FOB rapeseed around EUR 680/t (EUR 0.68/kg) in the Paris area and Ukrainian seed around EUR 460–493/t (EUR 0.46–0.493/kg) FCA/CPT Odesa and Kyiv. Recent quotes indicate a small softening in Ukrainian prices since late July but broadly stable or slightly firmer French levels over the same period, underlining Europe’s internal firmness against more competitive Black Sea supply.
Supply & Demand Drivers
The immediate driver is not a sudden change in rapeseed fundamentals, but the broader energy and vegetable oil complex. The IEA’s latest monthly report signals that, despite some demand destruction, global oil inventories will fall more than twice as fast in Q3 as previously estimated due to continued supply disruptions linked to the US–Iran war. With no progress in negotiations to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, the outlook for crude supply remains tight.
This structural deficit lifts crude benchmarks and filters into higher prices for biodiesel feedstocks and vegetable oils, including rapeseed and canola oil. The resulting price support is visible in both Euronext rapeseed and ICE canola, as well as Chicago soybeans, anchoring rapeseed at the upper end of its recent range. On the agricultural side, recent USDA and FAS projections still point to a broadly comfortable global oilseed balance in 2026/27, but with robust crush and biofuel demand keeping utilization high.
In the EU, the 2026 rapeseed harvest outlook is for a slightly higher cultivated area compared with the previous year and near-average yields. USDA FAS expects EU rapeseed area to edge up to around 6.3 million hectares for the 2026 harvest, implying a crop close to the prior year’s 20.5 million tonnes. This suggests that domestic supply should be adequate in volume terms, but price levels will remain heavily conditioned by energy markets and competing oilseeds rather than by acute physical scarcity.
Fundamentals & Weather
Fundamentally, rapeseed is moving from the immediate harvest window into a phase where crush margins and oil demand become more important. Strong biodiesel and food oil demand, together with firm soy and palm oil prices, are keeping rapeseed oil values elevated. In North America, recent oil crops data show sustained canola crush and higher exports year-on-year, underpinning tightness in canola availability and helping to justify the premium to historical averages.
Weather in major EU rapeseed regions (France, Germany, Poland, Romania) for mid-August is largely neutral for the already-harvested 2026 crop, with typical late-summer conditions and no major stress factors reported for the new planting season at this stage. Planting decisions for 2027 will be influenced more by the current attractive price signals and agronomic rotation needs than by short-term weather noise. However, any emergence of persistent dryness in key sowing areas later in August–September could become a relevant risk for establishment and, by extension, next season’s yield potential.
Trading Outlook
- Producers (EU): With Nov 2026 near EUR 535–540/t and a relatively flat curve into mid-2027, consider layering in additional sales on rallies driven by crude oil spikes, especially if local basis remains firm. Retain some exposure to ongoing energy risk, but avoid overdependence on further geopolitical escalation.
- Crushers: Current flat futures and strong oil values still offer reasonable crush margins. Locking in forward seed coverage against sales of rapeseed oil and meal into Q1–Q2 2027 can hedge against a potential easing of the oil market or a rebound in EU supply expectations.
- Importers/Buyers (EU & Mediterranean): Ukrainian rapeseed remains price-competitive versus French origin. Consider diversifying origin and forward-covering a share of Q4 2026–Q1 2027 needs while Black Sea logistics remain functional and before any renewed freight or insurance shocks from the Hormuz conflict spill over into other shipping lanes.
- Speculative participants: The market is currently highly sensitive to energy headlines. Strategies that exploit volatility—such as buying dips on energy-led pullbacks while managing downside via options—may be preferable to outright directional bets, given that medium-term supply looks adequate if the geopolitical premium fades.
Short-Term Price Indications (Next 3 Days)
- Euronext Rapeseed (Nov 2026): Bias modestly upward in EUR terms, tracking crude oil strength and ICE canola; likely to trade within roughly EUR 525–550/t barring a sudden shift in geopolitical news.
- ICE Canola (Nov 2026, EUR-equivalent): After the recent 1–2% daily gains, scope for further short-covering exists, but prices may consolidate at elevated levels, supporting European rapeseed through arbitrage.
- Physical EU/Black Sea: French FOB offers are likely to remain firm near current EUR 670–690/t levels, while Ukrainian FCA/CPT values should stay competitive but may stabilize after recent small declines, assuming no disruption in regional logistics.
