Record Indian Soybean Oil Imports Reshape Global Soy Complex

India’s record soybean oil imports and high stocks are reshaping global soy complex flows, with Brazil gaining share and soybean prices staying range-bound.

India’s record soybean oil buying is tightening the global soy complex on paper, but swollen port stocks and softer futures are capping immediate upside for raw soybeans. India’s sharp increase in soybean oil imports to 5.65 million tonnes in October 2025–September 2026, alongside rising palm oil inflows and weaker sunflower oil arrivals, is reshuffling global vegetable oil trade. Brazil, China and Argentina are strengthening their roles as key suppliers, while the Black Sea sunflower oil corridor remains constrained. At the same time, international soybean futures and physical bean quotations have been trading sideways to slightly weaker, reflecting good South American crop prospects and comfortable global meal availability. For soybean markets, India’s oil demand remains a medium‑term support, but large Indian port inventories and competitive palm oil limit short‑term price momentum.

Prices

Current soybeans indications from our panel show a broadly stable, slightly soft tone across key origins:

  • China, Beijing, Soybeans yellow, FOB: 0.74 EUR/kg (conventional) and 0.85 EUR/kg (organic); both unchanged versus 21 October 2026.
  • India, New Delhi, Soybeans sortex clean, FOB: 0.89 EUR/kg, stable over the last week.
  • US, Washington D.C., Soybeans No. 2, FOB: 0.58 EUR/kg, flat since mid‑October.
  • Ukraine, Odesa, Soybeans FOB: 0.333 EUR/kg, and GMO‑free CPT: 0.401 EUR/kg, both edging modestly higher over October.

CBOT soybean futures have traded in a tight range in recent sessions, with nearby contracts hovering around mid‑range levels as ample old‑crop global supplies offset support from firm vegetable oil demand.

Origin Product Term Latest price (EUR/kg) 1–3 week trend
China, Beijing Soybeans yellow FOB 0.74 Sideways / slightly lower vs late September
China, Beijing Soybeans yellow, organic FOB 0.85 Firm but stable after small early‑October gains
India, New Delhi Soybeans sortex clean FOB 0.89 Stable at recent highs
US, Washington D.C. Soybeans No. 2 FOB 0.58 Soft vs late September, now flat
Ukraine, Odesa Soybeans FOB 0.333 Mildly higher over October
Ukraine, Odesa Soybeans GMO‑free CPT 0.401 Gradual appreciation amid logistics risk

Supply & Demand Shifts

India’s record soybean oil imports of 5.65 million tonnes in October 2025–September 2026 underline robust underlying demand for vegetable oils and indirectly for soybeans. Brazil lifted its soybean oil shipments to India from 907,000 to 1.23 million tonnes, while China increased deliveries from 2,000 to 213,000 tonnes. The US shipped no soybean oil to India in this period, versus 229,000 tonnes a year earlier.

Palm oil also gained ground: September 2026 imports into India rose 15.6% year‑on‑year to 843,000 tonnes, with total palm oil arrivals at 8.24 million tonnes in the same October–September span, strengthening Malaysia’s share. In contrast, sunflower oil imports into India slumped 57% in September to 109,000 tonnes, reflecting ongoing logistical disruptions from the Black Sea region and a shift of Indian buyers toward South American origins.

These shifts are echoed in broader trade statistics: Brazilian soybean and soy‑product exports remain elevated, contributing significantly to Brazil’s strong trade surplus in September 2026. Argentina also capitalizes on sunflower oil shortfalls, expanding its deliveries to India from 475,000 to 815,000 tonnes, which indirectly supports crushing margins and soybean demand there.

Fundamentals & Stocks

India’s vegetable oil stocks at ports reached about 1.2 million tonnes at the end of September, the highest level in three years. Within this, soybean oil accounts for a sizeable share, following consecutive months of strong imports; SEA data for August already showed combined port and pipeline stocks of around 0.39 million tonnes of crude soybean oil.

High inventories give Indian refiners and importers comfortable coverage and reduce the urgency for nearby soybean oil purchases, despite firm structural demand. For the soybean complex, this means that while crush demand in exporting countries remains supported by India’s record intake, spot pull from India may ease temporarily, limiting upside for raw bean prices.

Globally, South American supply prospects are constructive. Brazil’s soybean planting is ahead of last year and farmgate soybean prices there have eased modestly month‑on‑month, encouraging aggressive export selling. Strong Brazilian and Argentine export availability, combined with steady US shipments, keeps the global balance sheet relatively comfortable in the short term, even as Asian oil demand stays resilient.

Weather & Risk Outlook

Weather in key producing regions is currently a watch‑but‑not‑panic factor. Early planting in Brazil is progressing slightly ahead of last year, with generally favorable moisture conditions in major states, though some pockets face short‑term dryness. For now, this supports expectations for a normal to above‑trend 2026/27 South American soybean crop.

In the Black Sea region, ongoing logistical and geopolitical risks continue to affect sunflower oil export flows more than soybean shipments, indirectly supporting soybean oil’s share in India’s import mix. Any escalation that further constrains Black Sea exports could tighten the global vegetable oil balance later in the season, lending support to soybean oil and, with a lag, to soybeans.

1–3 Month Market & Trading Outlook

Market view: Record Indian soybean oil imports and high port stocks argue for a near‑term consolidation phase in soybean and soybean oil prices, with downside limited by resilient Asian demand and reasonably constructive South American weather.

  • Importers / crushers (Asia, MENA): Use current sideways price action to extend coverage modestly into Q1 2027, focusing on Brazil and Argentina where export competition is strong. Avoid over‑buying nearby cargoes given India’s high stocks and still‑comfortable global supply.
  • Producers (Americas, Black Sea): Scale up hedging on rallies, especially if weather headlines or logistics disruptions temporarily tighten vegetable oil spreads. Priority should be on forward months where Brazilian planting risks are not fully priced.
  • End‑users (feed, food industry): Maintain flexible coverage between soybean oil and palm oil; India’s large palm and soy oil imports suggest that relative pricing rather than outright scarcity will drive margins in the near term.

3‑Day Directional Outlook

  • CBOT soybeans: Likely range‑bound with a slight downward bias as markets digest solid South American progress and India’s ample oil stocks.
  • FOB China / India beans: Stable to mildly soft; limited fresh buying interest expected while crushers monitor oil spreads and freight costs.
  • Black Sea (Ukraine) beans: Slightly firmer bias on persistent logistics and risk premia, though absolute volumes remain modest.
