Concise November 2026 rice market update: mild futures uptrend, steady VN & IN FOB prices, El Niño weather risk and trading outlook.

Rice markets are trading with a mild bullish bias: CBOT rough rice futures have firmed along the forward curve, while Vietnamese and Indian FOB prices are largely steady after recent gains. Weather and policy signals from Asia remain the main risk factors but, for now, do not point to acute short‑term tightness. The current set‑up is a transition from a sharp rally into a more orderly, gently rising market. U.S. futures remain elevated versus a year ago, yet show only modest day‑to‑day moves, suggesting the rally is consolidating. At the same time, our latest quotations indicate stable to slightly softer FOB prices in Vietnam and mostly steady basmati and parboiled values in India compared with late October, as exporters test demand at higher levels. Against this backdrop, weather‑driven supply news in key Asian origins and any renewed export policy headlines from India will be crucial for the next leg.

Prices

CBOT rough rice futures show a firm, slightly upward‑sloping curve. The front November 2026 contract last settled at 17.92 USD/cwt, up 1.59% on the day, with March 2027 at 18.76 USD/cwt and May 2027 at 18.95 USD/cwt. Nearby strength reflects ongoing tightness in available long‑grain supplies and sustained speculative length.

Further out, the curve peaks around mid‑2027 and then eases: July 2027 closed at 18.99 USD/cwt, while the first new‑crop September 2027 contract trades notably lower at 16.55 USD/cwt and November 2027 at 16.24 USD/cwt. This structure signals that today’s tightness is not yet priced as a lasting structural shortage and that the market expects some supply response in the next production cycle.

Supply & Demand

CBOT rough rice has rallied strongly over the past year, driven by a smaller U.S. crop, high input costs and earlier concerns around El Niño‑related supply risks. Futures remain near multi‑year highs, but the current consolidation suggests that neither exporters nor importers are willing to chase prices aggressively at this stage.

Asian export flows are stabilising. Thai benchmark 5% white rice remains elevated after its 2026 rally, and recent commentary points to Vietnamese 5% broken white rice offers moving closer to Thai levels as Vietnam tests higher export prices on tight regional supplies.  India continues to be the main policy wild card after past export restrictions; while no fresh bans have been reported in the last few days, the market remains alert to any sign of renewed curbs if domestic prices accelerate.

Weather & Crop Conditions

Weather risk remains centred on Asia. In India, the 2026 monsoon finished below normal overall, with rainfall deficits focused in parts of the South and East, while key rice states in Central and Eastern India entered the post‑monsoon period with above‑average reservoir levels.  This combination points to only localized stress rather than a broad‑based crop failure, but leaves pockets of vulnerability if the winter and spring seasons turn dry.

In Vietnam, the Mekong Delta has passed its seasonal flood peak and is transitioning toward the drier part of the year. This typically supports harvesting and logistics, although El Niño‑linked rainfall variability can still affect late‑planted paddies and the timing of the next sowing window.  Overall, current weather does not justify panic buying but warrants close monitoring into early 2027.

Fundamentals & Positioning

The CBOT forward curve confirms a tight nearby balance but more comfortable expectations further out. November 2026 through July 2027 trade in a relatively narrow, elevated band near 18–19 USD/cwt, before a marked discount in the new‑crop September 2027 contract around 16.55 USD/cwt. This structure is consistent with high current cost levels and limited short‑term stock cover, but also with anticipated acreage response and potential yield recovery.

Recent Commitments of Traders data show large speculators holding a significant net long position in rough rice, while commercials are net short.  This suggests that part of the price strength is financially driven. Any shift in macro sentiment or a run of favourable crop news could therefore trigger bouts of long liquidation, adding volatility to an otherwise tight physical market.

Trading Outlook (next 1–3 weeks)

  • Importers: With Vietnamese FOB long white 5% at 0.34 EUR/kg and Jasmine at 0.36 EUR/kg, recent modest softening offers an opportunity to cover near‑term needs, especially for Q1‑2027 shipments, while avoiding over‑extension on longer tenors.
  • Exporters in Vietnam & India: The current CBOT flat price near 18 USD/cwt supports attractive hedging margins. Consider incremental forward selling on price spikes, particularly in PR11 and 1121 segments where FOB values have firmed since late October.
  • Speculative participants: The upward‑sloping but ultimately backwardated curve and crowded long positioning argue for a more tactical approach: buy dips only on clear weather or policy scares; otherwise, protect existing longs with tight stops or options.

3‑day directional outlook

  • CBOT rough rice (nearby): Slightly firmer bias within the recent 17.5–18.0 USD/cwt band, with intraday volatility driven by macro flows.
  • Vietnam FOB (Hanoi, key grades): Prices expected to remain broadly steady around current levels, with limited downside as long as regional demand stays solid.
  • India FOB (New Delhi, basmati & parboiled): Sideways to mildly firm, supported by earlier gains and lingering policy risk premium.
