Concise October 2026 rice market update: CBOT softens, Indian and Vietnamese FOB prices edge lower, while Asian export benchmarks stay historically firm.

CBOT rough rice futures are trading slightly softer after recent gains, while Indian and Vietnamese FOB prices show a mild correction from early-October highs but remain historically firm amid still-tight Asian export supplies. The global rice market enters mid-October with futures consolidating and physical markets in Asia adjusting lower from peak levels. Nearby CBOT contracts are marginally in the red after the previous session’s uptick, suggesting a pause rather than a trend change. In India and Vietnam, indicative FOB prices for several key grades have eased by around 1–3% over the past week, hinting at softer spot demand and some improvement in near-term availability, even as regional fundamentals stay relatively tight. Weather risks around the 2026/27 Asian crops and ongoing policy vigilance in India continue to underpin a higher floor for export quotations.

Prices

The CBOT rice curve is mixed but generally softer at the front. The November 2026 contract last traded at USD 17.20/cwt, down 0.06% on the day, with light volume and narrow intraday ranges, signalling a consolidative tone. The January 2027 contract is quoted at USD 17.64/cwt, also 0.08% lower, while further out the March–July 2027 strip has firmed in recent sessions, with March 2027 up 1.44% and July 2027 up 0.89% versus the previous settlement.

In physical markets, the latest FOB quotes in New Delhi (10 October 2026) point to a modest week-on-week easing across most Indian grades: 1121 steam at 0.70 EUR/kg FOB, 1509 steam at 0.64 EUR/kg FOB, Sharbati steam at 0.45 EUR/kg FOB and PR11 steam at 0.32 EUR/kg FOB, all down from 3 October. Organic basmati stands at 1.55 EUR/kg FOB and organic non-basmati at 1.25 EUR/kg FOB. Vietnamese FOB values in Hanoi are broadly steady at elevated levels, with long white 5% at 0.33 EUR/kg FOB and Jasmine at 0.35 EUR/kg FOB, while specialty varieties such as black rice (0.86 EUR/kg FOB) and Japonica (0.45 EUR/kg FOB) remain well supported.

Supply & Demand

Asian export supply remains tight by historical standards, but near-term availability has improved enough to cool some of the recent price spikes. Recent market commentary suggests Indian export values held at one-year highs through the first week of October, with Thai parboiled benchmarks also firm on flood concerns, while Vietnam’s 5% broken eased modestly on softer demand. India still dominates global exports, yet expectations of a smaller 2026/27 surplus are emerging as domestic consumption and stocks absorb more of the crop.

Vietnamese exporters, having shipped around 6.4 million tonnes in the first nine months of 2026, now face growing price competition from cheaper suppliers and uneven demand in key markets, which is weighing slightly on offer levels despite strong year-to-date volumes. At the same time, buyers in Africa and Asia remain wary of geopolitical and weather-related risks and are cautious about aggressively rebuilding inventories at current elevated price levels, limiting upside in spot demand.

Fundamentals & Weather

On fundamentals, India’s government rice stocks remain well above buffer norms, providing a powerful tool to manage domestic inflation through open market sales if needed, even as production in 2026/27 is preliminarily pegged about 4–5% lower year on year. Export policy has broadly shifted back to a more permissive stance compared with earlier restriction periods, but additional compliance requirements for shipments to some destinations keep transaction costs elevated for basmati and non-basmati exporters.

Weather remains a key swing factor. India’s 2026 southwest monsoon season has been characterised by near-normal all-India rainfall on aggregate but with significant regional and temporal variability, including phases of deficit that delayed kharif sowing in some districts. The region is also navigating El Niño conditions that historically increase yield uncertainty for rice across parts of South and Southeast Asia. In Thailand, recent flood concerns in central and northern regions have lent support to export quotations, particularly for parboiled grades.

Short-Term Outlook & Trading View

With nearby CBOT contracts drifting slightly lower and Asian FOB benchmarks easing from early-October peaks, the short-term bias is for a sideways-to-soft correction rather than a sharp sell-off. Elevated but ample Indian stocks, incremental relief on Vietnamese prices and some demand rationing at current levels argue against a renewed steep rally in the very near term, barring a fresh weather or policy shock.

  • Importers: Consider layering in coverage on price dips near current CBOT and FOB levels rather than chasing rallies, prioritising high-quality grades from India and Vietnam where spreads to Thai offers remain attractive.
  • Exporters (India/Vietnam): Use the current consolidation to hedge a portion of forward sales, especially for premium basmati, Jasmine and specialty segments that still price at a strong premium over standard white rice.
  • Speculators: Look for range-trading opportunities in CBOT November–January contracts, with modest downside risk capped by strong physical market floors and weather uncertainty into the 2026/27 harvest.

3‑Day Directional Price Indication

  • CBOT rough rice (Nov 26, Jan 27): Slight downside to sideways; mild pressure as recent gains are consolidated.
  • India FOB (New Delhi, key grades): Stable to slightly softer; modest further easing possible but major declines unlikely without a demand shock.
  • Vietnam FOB (Hanoi, 5% & fragrant types): Largely stable; minor softening risk if demand from key Asian buyers remains subdued.
