Russian rapeseed output jumps 23% while EU prices ease. Read how larger Black Sea supplies and firm demand shape short-term rapeseed price risks.
Prices
Physical quotations in our panel show a mixed but overall slightly softer tone in Europe. French rapeseed (origin FR, Paris, FOB) is indicated at 0.64 EUR/kg on 02 October, up from 0.62 EUR/kg on 24 September, indicating a modest firming in the latest assessment despite recent futures weakness. Ukrainian rapeseed (42% min oil, 98% purity, FCA Kyiv) is steady at 0.45 EUR/kg, while FCA Odesa stands at 0.46 EUR/kg, both unchanged from 01 October.
In logistics-inclusive terms, Ukrainian rapeseed grade 1, < 35 mcm, CPT Odesa, last moved down from 0.479 to 0.458 EUR/kg on 28 September, reflecting near-term pressure from comfortable domestic stocks and active selling. On the futures side, Paris rapeseed is trading around 538.25 EUR/t, having slipped roughly 2–3% over the past month as harvest pressure and weaker competing oils tempered earlier strength.

Supply & Demand
Russia’s oilseed campaign is progressing ahead of last year, with total oilseeds harvested at 14.68 mln t, already 0.1% above 2025 despite a 1.7% drop in average yields to 17.2 c/ha. The key driver is area expansion, which has allowed the sector to offset weaker productivity and lift output. Within this, rapeseed is the clear winner: production has reached 5.1 mln t, a strong +23% versus 2025, making it the leading oilseed by volume in the current campaign.
By contrast, Russian sunflower output is down 20.4% to 5.5 mln t, and soy production has fallen 24.7% to 2.7 mln t, tightening domestic availability of these competing oilseeds. This divergence supports rapeseed crush and export interest, with rapeseed increasingly positioned as the primary oil and meal source in Russia this season. Flaxseed (oil flax) is still being harvested, with 75.5% of planned 1.9 mln ha cut and 1.35 mln t already collected, adding incremental competition in niche markets but not challenging rapeseed’s dominant role.
Forward-looking, winter sowing underscores rapeseed’s strategic importance: winter oilseed sowings, predominantly rapeseed, have already exceeded prior expectations, reaching 836.4 thousand ha, a robust +31% vs. autumn 2025. This points to another strong rapeseed crop potential in the next marketing year. In parallel, a Russian grain harvest forecast of 141.8 mln t suggests that land competition from cereals remains manageable, reinforcing the structural shift toward oilseeds in general and rapeseed in particular.
Outside Russia, recent EU estimates trimmed the 2026 rapeseed crop to around 20 mln t, slightly below last year, helping keep European balance sheets tight even as global oilseed production rises. Strong EU demand also continues to underpin Ukrainian exports, where early-season stocks near 2.6–2.7 mln t and an estimated 1.5 mln t still to be marketed by winter keep nearby FOB/FCA prices under pressure but ensure a steady flow of seed into EU crushers.

Weather & Crop Conditions
Harvest weather across Russia’s main oilseed regions has so far enabled a faster pace than in 2025, supporting the reported 2% lead in harvest progress. Adequate field access and limited interruptions have been key for achieving the 23% year-on-year increase in rapeseed tonnage, especially given lower average yields. The principal risk now is less about finishing harvest and more about preserving quality and managing logistics as volumes move toward ports and crushers.
For the new season, the strong expansion in winter rapeseed sowings in Russia suggests that autumn conditions have been sufficiently favorable to encourage farmers to increase planted area. In the EU, early October forecasts point to seasonally cool, mixed conditions for rapeseed-growing regions, without major widespread stress signals at this stage. However, moisture distribution in coming weeks will remain important for establishment and winter hardiness, particularly in Central and Eastern Europe, where some areas entered autumn with soil moisture deficits.
Fundamentals & External Drivers
Fundamentally, the rapeseed complex is being pulled between ample or rising supplies in the Black Sea region and a slightly tighter EU balance sheet. Russia’s larger rapeseed crop and increased winter sowings indicate sustained export potential, especially if domestic crushing capacity cannot fully absorb the surplus. At the same time, lower Russian sunflower and soy crops tighten the broader oilseed complex, indirectly supporting rapeseed values through stronger domestic crush margins and feed demand for rapeseed meal.
On the demand side, EU biodiesel and food-oil sectors continue to underpin baseline consumption, with price signals increasingly tied to crude oil and diesel spreads. Recent commentary highlights that, even as global oilseed production is revised upward, EU rapeseed price levels remain firm due to the modest crop downgrade and robust import needs. Internationally, USDA and EU data point to higher overall 2026/27 oilseed output led by rapeseed and sunflowerseed, which caps upside but does not eliminate regional tightness, especially if logistics, policy, or weather curtail Black Sea exports.
Trading Outlook (Next 2–4 Weeks)
- European crushers: Use current futures weakness around 538 EUR/t and slightly softer Ukrainian CPT values to extend nearby coverage, particularly for Q4–Q1 positions, while keeping some flexibility for potential further harvest-related pressure.
- Producers in Russia and Ukraine: Consider a staggered selling strategy. The strong Russian crop and comfortable Ukrainian stocks argue against immediate tightness, but increased EU import demand and potential logistics bottlenecks could improve basis levels later in the season.
- Importers in MENA and Asia: Monitor Russian and Ukrainian export flows closely; rising Black Sea availability offers opportunities to diversify origin and capture discounts versus EU-origin seed, subject to freight, financing, and sanctions-related constraints.
- Speculators: With fundamentals broadly neutral to slightly bearish in the very short term but constructive further out, strategies that benefit from range-bound prices with a mild downside bias near current futures levels may be appropriate, while retaining optionality for weather or policy shocks.
3-Day Directional Outlook
- Paris (Euronext) rapeseed futures: Mildly bearish bias as markets digest large Russian and Ukrainian supplies and recent technical softness, with intraday volatility around macro headlines.
- French physical FOB (Paris): Largely steady to slightly softer, with basis levels cushioned by firm local demand but constrained by competitive Black Sea offers.
- Ukraine FCA/CPT (Kyiv, Odesa): Slight downside risk as selling interest remains strong and logistics channels are actively used, though sharp declines are unlikely without a broader sell-off in the oilseeds complex.
