Soybeans Steady as Weak Vegoil Demand Caps Upside

Soybeans trade sideways while Indian soybean oil demand softens and vegoil markets ease. Overview of prices, fundamentals, weather and a short-term outlook.

Indian soybean and rapeseed oil markets are under mild pressure as weak immediate demand and selling by traders coincide with softer international vegetable oil prices. This is tempering any bullish impulse for soybeans from the oil side of the complex. Soy complex sentiment is currently shaped more by sluggish edible oil offtake than by supply fears. In India, refined soybean oil prices have slipped on the back of hesitant buying and active selling, signalling comfortable near-term availability. At the same time, global soybean futures remain range-bound, while early South American planting weather is broadly cooperative, limiting risk premiums. With crushers facing weaker oil realisations and meal demand still seasonally modest, whole-bean prices are likely to stay capped in the short term rather than break significantly higher.

  • US soybeans No. 2, FOB Washington D.C., are indicated at 0.58 EUR/kg FOB, unchanged versus the previous quotation on October 23, 2026.
  • Ukrainian soybeans, FOB Odesa, stand at 0.333 EUR/kg FOB, also flat on the latest update, suggesting stable Black Sea export values.
  • Chinese soybeans, yellow, FOB Beijing, last quoted at 0.74 EUR/kg FOB for conventional and 0.85 EUR/kg FOB for organic product, show no recent change.

Supply & Demand

  • In India, soybean oil and rapeseed oil quotations are slipping as traders increase selling into a market with weak immediate purchasing, signalling comfortable short-term edible oil supply.
  • Refined soybean oil spot prices in Indore have eased slightly over the past day, reinforcing the picture of hesitant consumer and industrial demand in the key Indian vegoil hub.
  • Globally, soybean futures on major exchanges are trading sideways, with no fresh supply shock and expectations of ample 2026/27 South American production keeping the forward curve relatively tame.
  • Crushers face a squeeze: weaker realisations from soybean oil, while meal demand has yet to show a strong seasonal uptick, limit their willingness to bid up for physical beans.

Fundamentals & Weather

  • India: Softer soybean and rapeseed oil prices reflect both selling pressure and lacklustre near-term demand, pointing to adequate domestic supplies and a cautious downstream sector.
  • South America: Early-season weather is broadly supportive. Central Brazil has seen improving rainfall, with soybean planting in Mato Grosso running ahead of average, although some areas still monitor soil moisture closely.
  • An El Niño pattern brings the risk of rainfall irregularities, but current forecasts for key Brazilian and Argentine soybean regions lean neutral-to-supportive rather than threatening for early sowing.

4–6 Week Outlook

  • As long as Indian soybean oil demand remains weak and traders continue to sell into the market, soybean prices are likely to remain capped, with downside risk if global vegoil markets soften further.
  • If South American planting progresses smoothly under mostly favourable weather, global balance sheets for 2026/27 should tighten only modestly, limiting any sustained rally in international soybean values.
  • Upside risk would come mainly from a sudden weather shock in Brazil or Argentina or a sharp rebound in biofuel or edible oil demand; neither is visible in the very short term.

Trading Outlook

  • Importers: Use the current sideways price environment and weak vegoil demand to extend coverage modestly, especially from competitive origins such as the Black Sea, while avoiding aggressive forward over-buying.
  • Producers: Consider scaling in hedges on rallies rather than at current flat levels, as near-term fundamentals (soft oil demand, good weather) argue against a strong price spike.
  • Crushers: Monitor crush margins closely; with soybean oil under pressure, focus on flexible procurement and sales timing rather than volume expansion.

3-Day Regional Price Indication

  • US, FOB Gulf/Atlantic (US No. 2): Sideways bias around recent levels, with only minor intra-day volatility expected.
  • Black Sea, FOB Odesa (standard & GMO-free): Stable to marginally softer, tracking global vegoil sentiment and freight conditions.
  • China, FOB North China (yellow & organic): Largely steady, with domestic fundamentals and currency moves more important than export competition over the next few days.
