Concise sunflower market update covering SAFEX futures, Black Sea seed pressure, Ukrainian and Chinese EUR prices, and a short-term trading outlook.

Sunflower markets are navigating a harvest-driven soft patch: Black Sea seed prices remain under pressure, but SAFEX futures have rebounded modestly and product prices in Europe and Asia show a mixed, slightly softer tone. Ukrainian seed and oil quotations in EUR are edging lower, while selected Chinese kernel and striped seed grades are firming. The complex is transitioning from a tight, war-premium environment to one dominated by record 2026/27 crop expectations and heavy farmer selling. SAFEX sunflower futures have moved off late‑September lows but still reflect comfortable availabilities. In the Black Sea region, ample sunflower seed supply weighs on FCA and FOB values, while Ukraine’s policy floor for sunflower oil and ongoing logistics constraints limit downside in the oil segment. For buyers, this creates an opportunity to secure nearby coverage on dips, while growers face increasing pressure to sell into a softer basis.

Prices

SAFEX sunflower futures on 9 October 2026 closed higher across the curve, signalling a modest technical rebound after the late‑September sell‑off. The October 2026 contract settled at ZAR 10,289/t, up 0.38% day‑on‑day, while December 2026 ended at ZAR 10,404/t, gaining 0.44%. Further out, March 2027 closed unchanged at ZAR 9,800/t, May 2027 eased slightly to ZAR 9,619/t (−0.17%), and July 2027 ticked up to ZAR 9,674/t (+0.73%). Overall, the curve remains relatively flat to slightly weaker into mid‑2027, consistent with comfortable forward supply expectations.

In the physical Black Sea market, sunflower seed quotations in EUR continue to soften. Ukrainian black sunflower seeds FCA Odesa and FCA Kyiv are indicated at EUR 0.41/kg as of 8 October and 9 October respectively, down from EUR 0.44–0.45/kg in mid‑September. FOB Odesa black sunflower seeds for export are quoted at EUR 0.564–0.571/kg in mid‑ to late September and have eased to EUR 0.564/kg by 17 September and EUR 0.571/kg by 2 October before slipping again to EUR 0.564/kg on 9 October, reflecting steady but pressured export demand.

Product prices show a similarly mixed picture. Ukrainian sunflower kernels (meal) FOB Odesa are quoted around EUR 0.547–0.564/kg in late September and early October, marginally lower than mid‑September levels. Crude sunflower oil CPT Odesa has softened from EUR 1.176/kg on 17 September to EUR 1.056–1.091/kg by late September and to EUR 1.024/kg by 5 October, in line with the policy‑induced floor and weaker global vegetable oil complex. Chinese confection and bakery kernels FOB Beijing, however, have firmed slightly, with hulled confection kernels at EUR 1.09/kg and organic confection kernels at EUR 1.21/kg as of 8 October, while hulled bakery kernels hold at EUR 1.25/kg.

Supply & Demand

A record 2026/27 sunflower crop in the Black Sea region, particularly in Ukraine and Russia, is the dominant fundamental driver. Recent regional analysis highlights that rapidly advancing harvesting is swelling seed supplies and pressuring farm‑gate and domestic purchase prices across Moldova, Ukraine and neighbouring countries, with Moldovan seed values reportedly down by roughly 500–600 lei/t over the last month as of early October.

On the demand side, sunflower crushing margins remain relatively attractive versus soy and rapeseed, but export logistics and policy interventions are limiting the pace at which seed and oil can leave the region. Ukraine’s high minimum export price for sunflower oil on CPT terms continues to cap downside in oil values while simultaneously slowing export flows, shifting more of the oversupply pressure back onto seeds. Meanwhile, confection and bakery kernel demand from European and Asian snack and bakery industries remains steady, helping to support higher‑value kernel segments compared with bulk oilseed streams.

Fundamentals & Weather

Fundamentally, the sunflower complex is moving from a tight, risk‑premium environment to one of ample seed availability and constrained logistics. Harvest progress in the Black Sea is rapid, and local analysts note that 2026 sunflower harvests are high across Moldova, Ukraine, Romania and other regional producers. That easing in supply tightness is reflected both in the softening EUR seed prices in Ukraine and in the earlier pressure seen on SAFEX futures before the latest small rebound.

Weather in key Black Sea sunflower regions over the coming days is generally benign. Short‑term forecasts for southern Ukraine and neighbouring areas point to mostly dry or only light, scattered showers, with temperatures close to seasonal norms, conditions that should allow harvesting to continue at a strong pace and prevent any weather‑driven support to prices in the very near term. This reinforces the harvest‑pressure narrative for seeds into mid‑October.

Forecast & Trading Outlook

In the next few weeks, sunflower seed prices are likely to remain under moderate downward pressure as record Black Sea supplies meet limited export capacity, while sunflower oil and high‑value kernels stay relatively better supported by policy floors and resilient food demand. External vegetable oil benchmarks and crude oil markets will continue to influence upside potential, but for now, the balance of risks for seeds is slightly bearish and for oils is sideways to modestly firm.

  • Importers & crushers: Consider layering in additional nearby coverage for Black Sea seeds and crude oil on price dips, especially around current FCA/FOB Ukrainian levels, while keeping some flexibility for further harvest‑driven softness.
  • Growers: With SAFEX futures off their lows but still facing a comfortable supply backdrop, evaluate incremental hedging on rallies in the front months and avoid concentrating sales late in the harvest when local basis pressure may be strongest.
  • Kernel buyers: Given relatively firm Chinese and European kernel quotations, focus on origin diversification and early contracting for high‑spec bakery and organic kernels rather than expecting significant price relief from the seed oversupply.

3‑Day Directional Outlook

  • SAFEX sunflower (ZAR/t): Mildly sideways to slightly firm as the market consolidates recent gains above ZAR 10,000/t in October 2026 futures, with limited fresh fundamental news.
  • Black Sea seeds (EUR/kg, Ukraine FCA/FOB): Slightly softer bias as ongoing harvest selling and ample regional supply outweigh modest export interest.
  • Sunflower oil & kernels (EUR/kg, Black Sea & China): Mostly sideways; policy floors and snack/bakery demand should offset seed‑driven weakness, keeping product prices relatively stable in the very short term.
