Sunflower Market Softens as Oilseed Complex Turns Bearish

Sunflower market update: SAFEX sunflower futures and global oilseed weakness pressure prices; FOB Ukraine and China kernels mostly softer with solid nearby supply.

Sunflower values are trading with a softer bias as SAFEX sunflower futures extend their pullback and the wider oilseed complex comes under pressure from strong soybean fundamentals and ample near‑term supply. Sunflower markets are digesting lower SAFEX quotations, slightly weaker Ukrainian crush product prices and a mixed kernel complex out of China and the EU. The backdrop is a comfortable global oilseed balance: US soybeans are heading for a record crop, Brazilian planting is progressing well and EU rapeseed and sunflower prospects have improved. Together with still‑solid Black Sea sunflower seed and oil availability, this is capping any upside for sunflower seeds, meal and oil in the short term.

Prices

SAFEX sunflower futures in South Africa moved lower across the front strip on 21 October 2026, with the October 2026 contract settling at ZAR 10,410, down 0.72% on the day. The nearby November and December 2026 contracts also eased to ZAR 10,468 and ZAR 10,496 respectively, while March 2027 fell more sharply to ZAR 9,731, a 1.74% decline, underscoring a softer forward curve.

Physical sunflower products show a similarly cautious tone. In Ukraine, black sunflower seeds (98% purity, FOB Odesa) most recently traded at EUR 0.567 on 16 October under FOB terms, with FCA Odesa and Kyiv seeds at EUR 0.41 on 15 October. Crude sunflower oil CPT Odesa is quoted at EUR 1.032 as of 16 October, slightly below early‑month levels, while sunflower kernels meal FOB Odesa is indicated at EUR 0.545.

Chinese sunflower seeds (black with stripe, 98% purity, FOB Beijing) are quoted at EUR 1.48 as of 21 October, unchanged from the prior quotation on the same date. Hulled confection kernels FOB Beijing eased to EUR 1.03 from EUR 1.08 between 14 and 21 October, bakery kernels held steady at EUR 1.22, and organic confection kernels firmed modestly to EUR 1.26 from EUR 1.23 over the same period.

Supply & Demand

The broader oilseed complex is currently well supplied. In the US, soybeans are being harvested under favourable weather, and the crop is expected to reach a record 124 million tonnes. This, together with smooth soybean planting progress in Brazil and a stable Argentine outlook around 48–50 million tonnes, weighs on vegetable oil values and indirectly caps sunflower oil upside.

In Europe, the sunflower seed crop is turning out better than feared earlier in the season. Recent European Commission balance sheet updates and trade estimates point to EU‑27 sunflower seed production around the mid‑9 million tonne range for 2026/27, implying a low‑teens percentage increase versus last season and easing concerns about tight seed availability.

Ukraine remains a cornerstone supplier of sunflower seeds and oil despite ongoing logistical and security challenges. The latest weather assessments indicate that the Ukrainian sunflower harvest is effectively completed and that dry October conditions are largely a non‑event for yields. Sufficient seed supply, combined with robust domestic crushing capacity, continues to underpin export availability of crude sunflower oil from the Black Sea region.

Fundamentals & External Drivers

Sunflower prices are being pulled lower in tandem with other vegetable oils. Chicago soybean futures have fallen for nine consecutive sessions, and rapeseed on Euronext, as well as canola in Winnipeg, have also recorded multi‑day declines to their lowest levels since late August. Palm oil has corrected as traders lock in profits after recent gains. This cross‑commodity weakness feeds through to sunflower oil and seed pricing via substitution effects in global vegoil demand.

On the demand side, US export sales of soybeans have been strong this week, led by China and Spain, reinforcing confidence in soybean crush margins and oil supply. For sunflower, demand remains steady but not aggressive, with buyers taking advantage of easier prices and broad availability rather than chasing coverage forward. Sentiment is also shaped by speculative flows: in rapeseed, for example, financial investors recently cut net long positions substantially, signalling less appetite for upside bets and supporting a more defensive stance across oilseeds.

Weather Outlook

Weather is currently a secondary driver for sunflower. In Ukraine, the harvest is essentially wrapped up and recent dry spells are not impacting yields, suggesting minimal weather‑related price risk in the short term. In the EU, major producing regions have already secured most of their sunflower crop, with current conditions more relevant for subsequent winter crops than for remaining sunflower fields.

In South America, attention is focused on soybean and corn weather rather than sunflower, but any significant deviation from normal rainfall patterns could indirectly affect sunflower through shifts in global vegoil balances and crush economics.

Trading Outlook (next 1–3 weeks)

  • Producers: With SAFEX futures under pressure and forward contracts for March 2027 notably weaker than nearby months, consider scaling in sales on modest rallies rather than chasing the current dip. Basis opportunities may emerge if local crushers increase spot demand against weaker futures.
  • Crushers: The combination of softer seed values and still‑resilient product pricing offers margin protection. Locking in seed coverage where FOB or FCA quotations have adjusted lower, while maintaining flexibility on oil sales, can help manage downside risk if the vegoil complex weakens further.
  • Importers & food manufacturers: Current FOB offers for kernels and crude oil suggest a buyer’s market in the short term. Staggered purchasing and extending coverage modestly into early 2027 could be attractive, but avoid over‑committing given the ample global oilseed outlook.

3‑Day Directional Outlook

  • SAFEX sunflower futures: Bias slightly lower to sideways as long as global soybean and rapeseed futures remain on the defensive and speculative length continues to unwind.
  • Black Sea sunflower seeds & oil (Ukraine): Sideways to mildly softer, with comfortable seed supply and firm but not surging export demand keeping FOB and CPT quotations contained.
  • Chinese sunflower kernels (FOB Beijing): Mostly stable for bakery grades; a consolidating to slightly softer tone for confection kernels after the recent price reduction.
