Tight Mustard Selling Supports Seed Prices as Edible Oils Diverge

Mustard seed prices in India stay firm on tight farmer stocks and steady crushing demand, even as mustard oil and rival edible oils face softer demand.

Firm mustard seed prices in India are being sustained by tight farmer selling and steady crushing demand, even as parts of the edible oil complex soften. Mustard oil has eased slightly on weak consumer and retail demand, while rival oils such as rice bran and sesame are under stronger downward pressure. Overall, the balance of fundamentals still points to supported mustard seed values in the near term. India’s mustard complex has entered October with resilient seed prices despite sizeable daily arrivals around 250,000 bags. Crushers continue to bid aggressively for good-quality seed, keeping benchmark levels in the INR 8,550–8,600 per quintal range in key markets. At the same time, mustard oil has slipped modestly, reflecting consumer resistance at higher price points and competition from cheaper imported palm and soy oils. Trade is increasingly focused on limited farmer-held stocks and the approaching Rabi 2026–27 sowing window, which will shape planting decisions and the next supply cycle.

Prices

Mustard seed in the New Delhi market gained about INR 50 to trade around INR 8,550–8,600 per quintal, extending last week’s firm tone. Mustard cake also strengthened on the back of feed-sector buying, confirming robust crushing margins at current levels. In contrast, mustard oil softened by roughly INR 50 to about INR 17,000 per quintal as end-user demand lagged the move in seed.

National mandi data show all-India modal mustard prices in the mid-INR 7,000 per quintal band, with firmer levels in Rajasthan and Haryana and lighter arrivals underpinning the upside. Despite this, mustard oil remains at a premium to competing soft oils, which have seen more pronounced corrections.

Supply & Demand

Daily arrivals around 250,000 bags (roughly 10,000 tonnes) indicate an active flow from producing states but not enough to overwhelm demand. Limited farmer-held stocks are a key supportive factor, as growers appear in no hurry to liquidate remaining inventory at current price levels. Crushers and millers continue to secure seed to maintain throughput, keeping procurement interest firm even as oil offtake softens.

On the oil side, rice bran oil has fallen by about INR 50 to near INR 12,900 per quintal, and sesame oil has dropped by roughly INR 100 to around INR 17,800 per quintal. Cottonseed oil bucked the trend, rising about INR 100 to around INR 14,550 per quintal, while crude palm oil at Kandla is quoted near INR 12,100 per quintal, supported by firm Malaysian futures. These mixed moves highlight how imported palm and soy oil benchmarks continue to dictate the ceiling for domestic edible oil prices.

Fundamentals

The current structure of the mustard complex remains fundamentally constructive for seed. Tight spot availability, cautious farmer selling, and healthy feed demand for mustard cake are offsetting the drag from softer oil realizations. Recent national data confirm that modal mustard prices have risen INR 100–400 per quintal over the past week in several key mandis, led by Rajasthan, Haryana, and Delhi.

At the same time, all-India mustard oil mandi prices have been broadly steady to slightly softer in late September, with benchmark values well below recent peaks but still elevated in historical terms. This divergence—firm seed and cake versus easing oil—suggests crushing margins are being squeezed at the margin, but not yet enough to curtail demand for seed.

Weather & Planting Outlook

Weather conditions across northern and western India are currently favourable for field preparation ahead of Rabi 2026–27 mustard sowing. Advisory notes issued in early October emphasize timely sowing and proper seedbed management, underscoring official expectations of another significant mustard area this season.

If weather remains benign and input costs manageable, farmers are likely to maintain or marginally expand mustard acreage, encouraged by today’s strong price environment relative to government support levels. However, any delay in winter onset or localized moisture deficits could temper yield expectations and keep the market sensitive to weather headlines in the weeks ahead.

Market Outlook & Trading Ideas

  • Near term (1–2 weeks): Mustard seed prices are likely to stay firm to slightly higher as limited farmer stocks and steady crushing demand outweigh soft oil prices. Downside appears capped unless imported palm and soy oils correct sharply lower.
  • Crushers and millers: Consider covering a portion of Q4 seed needs on price dips, given currently supportive fundamentals and the risk of further tightness if sowing intentions surprise on the lower side.
  • Farmers and stockists: With spot seed well above historical support levels, staggered selling on strength remains prudent. However, holding a residual portion into the core sowing window could capture additional risk premium if arrivals tighten further.
  • Edible oil traders: Monitor the spread between mustard oil and imported palm/soy oils. If the discount on palm oil widens, substitution risk could increase, capping upside in mustard oil even if seed stays firm.
