Turmeric Market: Early Signs of Recovery From Depressed Levels

Turmeric prices show scope for recovery from low levels, with sustainability hinging on processor demand, crop conditions and export enquiries.

Turmeric prices are attempting a recovery from depressed levels, but the sustainability of this move will hinge on how processor demand, crop conditions and export enquiries evolve in the coming weeks. After a period of subdued values, the turmeric market is stabilising with a mild upward bias. Futures on NCDEX are holding above recent lows, while physical benchmarks in key Indian growing and trading centres show steady to slightly firmer levels. Nonetheless, the market lacks a strong immediate demand pull, and buyers remain price-sensitive. Weather risks in major producing regions such as Telangana and the pace of export enquiries will be decisive for whether the current rebound turns into a more durable price uptrend or fades back into range-bound trade.

Prices

Market indications point to a recovery phase from lower levels rather than an outright bull run. Indian NCDEX turmeric futures for October contracts are trading around INR 20,500 per quintal (roughly EUR 225–235/tonne equivalent at farm gate, depending on quality and FX), slightly higher than levels seen in early August, signaling modest buying interest rather than aggressive short-covering.

Export-grade products show a broadly steady pattern in Euro terms. Organic turmeric powder FOB New Delhi is quoted around EUR 3.19/kg, and organic whole turmeric around EUR 2.35/kg, unchanged over the last three weeks. Conventional dried fingers from Telangana (Salem and Nizamabad, double polished, Grade A) are indicated in a narrow band near EUR 1.38–1.55/kg FOB, with only marginal week‑on‑week adjustments, consistent with a cautious, stabilising market.

Supply & Demand

The short-term outlook is dominated by three variables: processor demand, crop performance and export interest. Domestic wholesale prices in India are broadly steady, with modal mandi levels near INR 9,000 per quintal across key markets as of early September, reflecting ample spot availability but limited selling pressure.

On the supply side, major producing states such as Telangana, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu are progressing through the critical phase of the 2026/27 crop. Below‑normal rainfall is forecast for Telangana in September, which could cap yield potential if deficits persist, but at present there are no reports of widespread crop damage similar to previous flood years. This keeps the market in a finely balanced position: not tight enough to trigger a price spike, but vulnerable to any weather or disease shock.

Fundamentals

Fundamentally, the market is transitioning from oversupply conditions towards a more balanced stance. The current recovery from lower levels suggests that earlier downside may have overshot underlying cost and value support, especially for better grades and certified organic material. Yet, the absence of strong immediate buying from processors indicates that downstream inventories remain comfortable.

Export enquiries are the other critical pillar. At today’s price levels, India remains competitive in many destination markets, but buyers are in no rush and often purchasing hand-to-mouth. A meaningful, sustained price uptrend will likely require either a visible tightening in on-farm supplies (e.g., weather‑affected yields) or a pickup in overseas demand as importers respond to the current price floor and potential concerns about the next crop.

Weather & Crop Conditions

Weather in core growing districts of Telangana remains a key watchpoint. Forecasts for September indicate below‑normal monsoon rainfall in the state, following earlier uneven precipitation. While moderate dryness can support quality and reduce disease pressure, a prolonged deficit during the bulking phase would limit yield gains and could gradually tighten the 2026/27 supply outlook.

So far, the market is treating weather risks as a supportive factor rather than a trigger for panic. Any confirmation of yield losses or acreage stress would likely translate quickly into firmer farm‑gate and futures prices, reinforcing the nascent recovery from current low levels.

Trading Outlook

  • Processors / grinders: Consider staggered coverage on dips around current levels, as prices appear to be forming a floor but immediate demand is still subdued. Avoid overbuying until clearer signals on crop performance emerge.
  • Exporters: Use the present stabilization in FOB offers to secure forward volumes for key destinations, especially in organic and higher‑grade fingers, but build in flexibility for potential weather‑driven upside later in the season.
  • Importers / end‑users: The risk/reward favours gradually extending coverage for Q4 2026–Q1 2027 requirements, as the downside from here looks limited relative to potential weather or export‑led tightness.

3‑Day Price Indication (Directional)

  • Indian NCDEX futures (farmer polished, Nizamabad basis): Slightly firm bias with consolidation above recent lows expected over the next 3 sessions.
  • FOB Telangana fingers (Salem & Nizamabad, conventional): Stable to mildly firmer in EUR terms, with limited downside as sellers resist further cuts.
  • FOB New Delhi organic powder & whole: Largely steady in EUR, with scope for small upticks if export enquiries improve.
