Ukraine’s Record Rapeseed Crush Reshapes European Market Pricing
Ukraine’s record rapeseed crush tightens seed exports, boosts oil and meal flows, and widens discounts to French prices. Concise outlook for rapeseed markets.
Prices
Physical rapeseed prices in late July 2026 show a softening trend for Ukrainian seed, while French values are stable. FCA Ukraine (Kyiv, Odesa) has eased from around EUR 0.52/kg in early July to about EUR 0.48/kg by 23 July, a decline of roughly 7–8% over the month. In contrast, French FOB Paris levels have held around EUR 0.68/kg since early July, after slipping from EUR 0.70/kg on 2 July.
The widening discount of Ukrainian seed to French origins reflects abundant local supply for crushers and the impact of higher export duties on unprocessed seed, which depress farmgate and FCA values relative to EU benchmarks. At the same time, robust demand for rapeseed oil and meal helps keep product prices firm, supporting crush margins even as raw seed weakens.
Supply & Demand
Ukraine processed a record 1.3 million tonnes of rapeseed in the 2025/26 marketing year, equivalent to roughly 42% of its total harvest. This marks the highest rapeseed-processing volume ever recorded in the country and signals a structural shift in the balance between exports of raw seed and domestically processed products.
The policy-driven increase in export duties on unprocessed rapeseed has redirected a significant share of the crop into local crushing rather than seaborne seed exports. As a result, the share of rapeseed available as raw export is shrinking, while supplies of rapeseed oil and meal to international markets are expanding. This rebalancing is particularly relevant for EU buyers, who have relied on Ukrainian seed flows and now face tighter seed availability but greater access to processed products.
Recent analyses suggest that EU rapeseed supply in 2026/27 could be somewhat tighter than previously expected due to spring cold spells and heatwaves, which may limit the crop to around or slightly below 20 million tonnes in a low-case scenario. At the same time, reports indicate that Ukrainian rapeseed yields at the start of the 2026 harvest are nearly 20% higher year-on-year, supporting an increase in overall Ukrainian output despite earlier winterkill concerns.
Fundamentals: Crushing, Oil & Meal
The expansion of Ukraine’s domestic rapeseed-processing sector is striking. Rapeseed oil output reached about 380,470 tonnes in 2025, more than double the 184,800 tonnes produced in 2021 and around 6.1 times the 62,900 tonnes recorded in 2022. Compared with more recent seasons, oil production rose 27% from 299,300 tonnes in 2023 and more than doubled from 171,800 tonnes in 2024, underlining a rapid post-war recovery and capacity utilization.
Rapeseed meal production has grown even faster in relative terms. Output climbed to roughly 540,460 tonnes in 2025, around 2.2 times the 246,680 tonnes produced in 2021 and almost seven times the 78,760 tonnes in 2022. Versus recent years, meal production increased by about 44% from 375,780 tonnes in 2023 and nearly 79% from 301,990 tonnes in 2024. This surge is reshaping feed markets, as Ukrainian meal becomes a more prominent, competitively priced protein source, with China emerging as a key buyer of Ukrainian rapeseed meal in 2025/26.
The record processing volume reflects not only policy incentives but also strong demand from food and biodiesel sectors. Higher domestic crushing allows Ukraine to export more value-added oil and meal rather than raw seed, capturing additional margin within the country. For global markets, this means increased availability of rapeseed oil for edible and biofuel uses and ample rapeseed meal for livestock feed, even if seed exports remain curtailed.
Weather & Regional Outlook
Weather remains a key swing factor for rapeseed in Europe and the Black Sea. Recent monitoring indicates that episodes of spring cold and early-summer heatwaves across parts of the EU have raised concerns over yield potential, reinforcing expectations of a moderately tighter EU rapeseed balance in 2026/27.
In Ukraine, early harvest reports show yields around 1.94 t/ha, nearly 20% higher than at the same stage last year, suggesting a stronger production base for the 2026/27 season. Improved yields, combined with still-high crushing incentives, point to continued strong domestic processing and sustained export flows of oil and meal, even if logistical and wartime challenges persist.
Trading Outlook & 3‑Day View
Key trading implications
- Seed vs product strategy: With Ukrainian seed priced at a growing discount to French origin and domestic crushing structurally higher, buyers may find more value in sourcing rapeseed oil and meal from Ukraine, while using Euronext and French seed for price discovery and hedging.
- Crush margins: The combination of softening Ukrainian seed prices and firm product demand supports attractive crush margins in Ukraine, favouring forward locking of seed where logistics and credit allow.
- Biodiesel and feed demand: Steady EU biodiesel policies and resilient livestock-feed demand should continue to underpin rapeseed oil and meal prices, limiting downside even in the face of good Black Sea yields.
Short-term (next 3 days) directional outlook
- French FOB Paris seed: Sideways to slightly firm in EUR terms, with Euronext values broadly rangebound and no major immediate weather or policy shocks visible.
- Ukraine FCA seed (Kyiv, Odesa): Slightly soft bias as harvest advances and domestic crushers are well supplied, but further downside may be limited by strong oil and meal offtake.
- Rapeseed oil & meal (Ukraine/EU): Stable to mildly supported, reflecting tightness in high-quality EU seed and ongoing biofuel and feed demand.
