2022/23 MR for the rapeseed market is coming to an end

Rapeseed sowing for this season was carried out in peacetime – in the fall of 2021. Then harvesting and its selling took place in wartime. Farmers and traders had to overcome a huge number of typical problems – shelling, stopping the work of ports, disruption of logistics chains, lack of electricity supply, import ban in Eastern European countries, etc.

Despite all these problems Ukraine in 2022 managed to reach a maximum of 3.6 million tons of rapeseeds. The record sown area and high yield have compensated for the losses. The share of rapeseed exports in the harvest exceeded 94%.

Due to the above-mentioned reasons, Ukrainians had to reorient their exports to ground logistics. The position of EU countries has strengthened – up to 90% of all exports compared to 67% according to the results of 2021/22.

If the import ban is extended after June 5 of this year, Ukraine will face serious problems

Bulgaria, Moldova, Hungary, Romania, and Poland accounted for more than half of all Ukrainian rapeseed exports in 2022/23. Currently, we can watch the downward trend in the price of Ukrainian rape under the influence of European trade trends. Price is decreasing 5-10 usd/t every week and additional pressure of the new crop is coming. If all factors remain the same, an increase in rapeseed prices is unlikely. Due to low demand from the EU (high harvest and stocks, import ban), Ukraine needs to look for alternative sales markets.
