Area under kharif crops down from last year

NEW DELHI: Area under all Kharif crops in the current sowing season reached 997.08 lakh hectares, down 1.78 per cent from the corresponding figure of 1015.15 lakh hectares last year, as per the sowing coverage data released by the Union Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers welfare.

As per the latest data, the acreage of the paddy is at 349.24 lakh hectares against 351.52 lakh hectares in the corresponding time last year. The area under pulses is 126.98 lakh hectares against 125.06 lakh hectares.

The acreage of moong is slightly down, but the area under arhar, urad kulthi and other pulses have exceeded the corresponding acreage last year. The sowing of arhar is complete in the area of 46.88 lakh hectares against 45.18 lakh hectares last year. The acreage of urad is 35.52 against 35.50 last year and moong has been sown in 30.52 lakh hectares against 32.93 lakh hectares last year. The area under Kulthi is 30,000 ha while other pulses have been sown in 11.75 lakh hectares.

The area under oilseeds is 180.14 lakh ha against 185.85 lakh hectares. The acreage of groundnut is 46.87 lakh hectares, down 2.76 lakh hectares from last year. Similarly, the area under soybean is 116.33 lakh hectares, down 2.43 lakh hectares from last year.

The acreage of cotton is at 116.17 lakh hectares, down 9.31 lakh hectares from the last year.
