Concise October 2026 barley market update: softer SFE futures, easing Ukrainian CPT/FOB prices, strong Australian supply and trading outlook.

Barley markets are turning softer into late October, with Australian SFE feed barley futures down around 3% across 2027 contracts and Black Sea cash prices under pressure from cheaper corn and sunflower meal. Abundant new-crop supply in Australia and weak export demand from key buyers are capping upside despite ongoing Black Sea logistical risks. Feed barley is trading in a narrow but slightly declining range across key origins. On the Australian SFE, deferred contracts for 2027 have slipped sharply, while Ukrainian CPT/FOB levels eased in recent weeks before stabilising as logistics stayed tight rather than improving. EU inland values remain comparatively firm, reflecting local tightness and freight constraints, but are increasingly challenged by aggressive Black Sea offers and cheaper competing feed grains.

Prices

Australian SFE feed barley shows a clear downward correction on 22 October 2026. The nearby Nov 2026 contract is unchanged at 315.00 AUD/t, but all 2027 deliveries dropped by 8.50 AUD/t (around 3%) in a single session, with Jan–Sep 2027 now marked at 266.50–271.50 AUD/t and deferred Jan 2028–Jan 2029 at 283.50 AUD/t. This points to a market repricing lower forward risk amid comfortable supply expectations.

In physical markets, Ukrainian feed barley prices in EUR remain soft. Recent indications show:

  • Barley seeds, cattle feed, origin UA, Odesa FOB: 0.119 EUR/kg (last update 22 Oct; previously 0.119 EUR/kg).
  • Barley seeds, feed grade 14% max, 98% purity, origin UA, Kyiv FCA: 0.14 EUR/kg (stable in October).
  • Barley seeds, feed grade 14% max, 98% purity, origin UA, Odesa FCA: 0.15 EUR/kg (down from 0.16 EUR/kg in mid-October).
  • Barley seeds, feed grade 14% max, origin UA, Odesa CPT: 0.138 EUR/kg (22 Oct; easing from peaks earlier in the month).
  • Barley seeds, feed grade 14% max, origin DE, Drentwede EXW: 0.222 EUR/kg (21 Oct; slightly lower than earlier October quotes around 0.23 EUR/kg).

External market commentary confirms that global barley retains a soft tone, with flat to slightly weaker feed prices in the EU and Black Sea, while ASX/SFE futures are largely flat to lower and sentiment is weighed by cheaper corn and other feed grains.

Supply & Demand

The sharp 3% decline in SFE 2027 barley futures aligns with expectations for another large Australian crop in 2026/27, leaving ample exportable surplus into Asia and the Middle East. Recent market reports highlight that Australian production is projected only slightly below last year yet still well above the five-year average, reinforcing the perception of comfortable global feed barley availability.

In the Black Sea, Ukraine continues to face constrained seaborne exports due to war-related logistical disruptions and high freight costs. Despite somewhat tighter logistics through Black Sea and Danube corridors, domestic Ukrainian barley prices are under pressure from falling corn and sunflower prices, which cheapen feed rations overall and erode demand for barley as a feed component.

EU feed barley demand remains relatively steady, but imported competition and abundant alternative feed grains limit upside. EU barley exports have lagged earlier in the season compared with the prior year, contributing to an adequately supplied European balance sheet even as some inland regions show tighter local availability.

Fundamentals & External Drivers

The current barley market is dominated by three overlapping factors: (1) large Australian supply and flat SFE futures; (2) Black Sea logistics that remain tight but not tightening further; and (3) cross-commodity pressure from cheaper corn and sunflower meal in Ukraine. Together, these keep global barley prices in a soft but not collapsing range.

In Ukraine, analysts note that export demand for feed barley is weak, with September domestic demand from processors no longer sufficient to offset falling prices for competing feed grains. Export demand prices in local currency for deliveries to Danube ports have recently been reported around the equivalent of mid-USD 140s per ton for feed barley, underlining the discount at which Ukrainian origin must trade to move volume.

Russia currently applies no export duty on barley, which encourages aggressive FOB offers from Russian ports and adds further pressure on Black Sea and global benchmarks.  Within the EU, inland prices like those in northern Germany remain relatively firm versus coastal offers, reflecting local demand and logistics costs, but this premium looks increasingly difficult to sustain if Black Sea flows continue at discounted levels.

Weather & Crop Outlook

Weather in key barley-producing regions is broadly supportive of current crop prospects. Australia has so far avoided major weather shocks for the 2026/27 barley crop, with production forecasts remaining robust and above the five-year average, though localized dryness still bears watching.

In the Black Sea region, recent reports emphasise logistics and security risks rather than weather as the main constraint. However, no acute weather threat is currently highlighted for winter barley establishment in Ukraine or Russia. As a result, short-term price moves are more likely to follow changes in logistics, policy, or competing feed grain prices than any immediate crop shock.

Trading Outlook (Next 1–3 Weeks)

  • Feed buyers (EU & Mediterranean): Use current softness in Ukrainian FOB/CPT and weaker SFE futures to secure nearby and early-2027 coverage. Downside from here looks limited without another leg lower in corn or a step-change improvement in Black Sea logistics.
  • Producers (Australia & EU): Consider scale-up hedging on rallies back toward recent highs in SFE 2027 contracts, given large crop prospects and competitive Black Sea supply.
  • Traders (Black Sea/EU corridor): Watch freight, insurance, and corridor policy closely. Any fresh disruption to Black Sea flows could quickly underpin EU and Mediterranean prices, but absent such shocks, basis levels are likely to stay under pressure.

3-Day Regional Directional View

  • SFE feed barley (Australia): Bias sideways to slightly lower after the recent 3% drop in 2027 contracts, with limited fresh bullish catalysts.
  • Ukraine (Odesa CPT/FOB, Kyiv FCA): Slight downside to flat, as weak export demand and cheaper corn/sunflower continue to weigh, though tight logistics may prevent a sharp fall.
  • EU inland (Germany EXW): Mostly stable, with modest downside risk if Black Sea offers remain aggressive and freight availability improves.
