Chilli India: Chilli production may hit a fresh record

Mumbai – India’s chilli average is likely to increase this season, and production may hit a fresh record.

According to the market analysts, the area under chilli is set to increase this Kharif season as farmers of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Karnataka, which are the major chilli growing states in the country, are seen taking more interest in expanding their coverage in anticipation of getting more profit as chilli fetched good prices for last year and chilli acreage may rise by 10-20 per cent this year as demand for seed has increased sharply.

However, the costlier seed is an issue because it will increase the input costs. In addition, the scarcity of good quality dry chilli is also a big reason for hikes in the prices of the commodity.

The demand for hybrid chilli seeds have increased, and its most preferred varieties are Byadgi and hybrid, which are considered tolerant to the leaf curl virus that spoils the leaves of the chilli and impacts the plants.

The spice market experts expect a fresh record of chilli crop area this year. Chilli sowing has picked up this year, and it may break the previous record of 8, 59,000 hectares in 2016-17 when its production was at 24,11,000 tonnes.

As per data from the Union Agriculture Ministry, chilli acreage was at 7,43,000 hectares in 2020-21, and production of dry chilli is pegged at 19,14,000 tonnes.

According to traders, prices are likely to increase further due to weak stocks and increased demand on ensuing festive demand.
