Argentina is suffering from the effects of a prolonged drought caused by the La Niña climate event, which has reduced rainfall in the country’s key production regions. Dry conditions are particularly noticeable in the central-eastern part of the country, where the production of wheat, corn and soybeans is concentrated.

Due to the weather regime, animals are dying on pastures, and farmers are forced to postpone crops, which could affect forage crops.

Declining crops due to drought

According to farmers, there has been a shortage of water for 2 years, and this year the level of moisture concentration in the soil has not even reached 50% of the norm for these regions. According to reports from the Rosario Stock Exchange (BCR), wheat, corn and soybean crops will decline by at least a third this year.

Producers fear that crop cuts will lead to a shortage of animal feed, which will have to be compensated by products intended for the food industry.

Argentina is the world’s largest exporter of soybean oil and meal, and one of the key suppliers of soybeans to foreign markets.
