Festival Demand Lifts Sesame as Indian Availability Stays Tight

Sesame prices edge higher on Indian festival demand, tight seed availability and firm oil quotations, with cautious upside into the Diwali window.

Sesame and sesame oil prices are edging higher as India’s festival season boosts demand and limited seed availability reduces selling pressure. Firm domestic oil quotations and steady buying by stockists are underpinning a mildly bullish tone despite broader volatility in the vegetable oil complex.

Across India’s edible and non-edible oil markets, sesame oil has joined mustard and cottonseed oil in posting weekly gains, supported by restocking ahead of peak festive consumption and constrained near-term supplies. Demand from food and other consuming industries remains solid, while sellers show less urgency as they gauge the new kharif crop and international vegetable oil benchmarks. Against this backdrop, export-oriented sesame seed prices in New Delhi and North Africa are holding a gentle upward trend, with buyers increasingly focused on quality and shipment reliability rather than deep discounts.

Prices

Semi-refined and refined sesame oil in India has moved higher over the past week, reflecting improved festival-related offtake and reduced selling pressure from producers and traders. This firm oil complex is feeding back into seed valuations in key trading centres.

FOB New Delhi quotations in EUR show a gradual upward bias across most Indian sesame seed categories. Hulled, EU-grade 99.95% purity from India (FOB New Delhi) is indicated at EUR 1.59, slightly above earlier-month levels, while similar hulled material at 99.97–99.98% purity is quoted around EUR 1.61–1.63. Regular black sesame seeds (99.90% purity) are indicated at EUR 1.86 FOB New Delhi, with semi Z black and super Z black at EUR 1.94 and EUR 2.01 respectively.

Natural white sesame from India (99.95% purity) stands near EUR 1.35 FOB, with lower-purity natural at 99.1% also around EUR 1.35. Organic natural sortex product is indicated at EUR 1.80 FOB New Delhi. Egyptian origins show mixed trends: natural golden sesame from Cairo is quoted at EUR 1.90 FOB, slightly softer than earlier in the month, while natural 99% purity material has firmed to EUR 1.45 FOB.

Supply & Demand

Domestic Indian supply is described as limited, with traders reporting constrained availability of sesame oil and seeds in wholesale channels. This tightness is amplifying the typical seasonal uplift associated with festival demand, as stockists top up positions rather than liquidate ahead of fresh crop arrivals.

On the demand side, household and food-industry use is firm in the run-up to major festivals, supporting both edible and non-edible oil segments. Sesame benefits from its dual role in direct consumption and as an ingredient in confectionery and food processing. Internationally, hulled sesame seed export flows remain active, with buyers in Asia and the Middle East competing for high-purity and specialty black grades, even as some global trade data still show uneven growth in shipment numbers.

Fundamentals & Weather

Indian edible oil markets as a whole are being shaped by both domestic oilseed availability and international vegetable oil quotations. While some competing oils have softened recently, sesame oil’s gain alongside mustard and cottonseed suggests a more specific tightening in these segments rather than a generalized rally across the complex.

For sesame, fundamentals remain underpinned by firm industrial and household use of oil and a cautious approach to seed selling. India’s 2026 monsoon has ended below normal, and El Niño-linked rainfall deficits have raised general concerns for kharif oilseeds, but sesame acreage has reportedly expanded and market participants are now watching harvest quality, moisture and oil content. Short-term agrometeorological outlooks point to generally seasonally drier post-monsoon conditions over many sesame areas, favouring harvest operations but keeping yield variability a key risk factor for later in the marketing year.

Outlook & Trading Ideas

With festival-related demand in full swing and near-term seed availability tight, the sesame complex appears biased to the upside into the late-October window. However, the pace of new crop arrivals and the evolution of international vegetable oil benchmarks will determine whether gains can extend into November.

  • Importers/Buyers: Consider covering nearby needs in tranches rather than waiting for a sharp post-harvest correction, especially for high-purity hulled and black grades where supply looks tightest.
  • Exporters/Crushers: Use current firmness in sesame oil and premium seed grades to lock forward sales, but maintain flexibility on volume commitments until crop quality is clearer.
  • Industry Users: Where possible, diversify between origins (e.g. India and Egypt) and specifications to manage price risk, while closely monitoring quality parameters on new-season offers.

3-Day Directional View

  • New Delhi FOB (hulled & black sesame): Slightly firmer bias as festival demand and limited selling support current levels.
  • Egypt FOB (natural & golden sesame): Mostly steady with a mild firm tone in natural grades and softer undertone in golden.
  • Europe FCA (imported hulled sesame): Stable to slightly higher, reflecting firmer replacement costs from India and steady spot demand.
