Guar Seed Holds Firm as Guar Gum Eases on Softer Industrial Demand
Guar seed prices remain firm on tight supply and lower sowing in Rajasthan, while guar gum eases on weak industrial demand. Short-term outlook and trading ideas.
Prices
Jodhpur guar gum declined by roughly 3.12 USD per quintal (about 2.5%), settling around 123.65–124.69 USD/qtl as subdued demand from industrial users and gum-powder manufacturers outweighed speculative interest. Guar seed, by contrast, remained comparatively firm at 63.38–63.90 USD/qtl, with mills and traders paying up to secure raw material amid worries over reduced sowing.
Guar churi traded at 45.20–47.59 USD/qtl, supported by steady animal-feed demand and limited supplies. In Ahmedabad, guar seed was quoted close to 62.86–63.38 USD/qtl, mirroring the firmness seen in Rajasthan-origin seed. Recent export offers for organic guar gum powder from India and Vietnam show a small week-on-week dip, reinforcing the picture of modest pressure on processed gum prices while seed values remain resilient.
Supply & Demand
On the supply side, limited selling from farmers and stockists is a key feature. Growers are cautious amid expectations of lower guar acreage in Rajasthan, partly linked to cropping shifts and uncertainty around rainfall distribution. This keeps nearby seed availability tight, even as gum processors try to resist higher raw-material costs.
Demand is mixed. Guar gum offtake from industrial and gum-powder users is currently subdued, pressuring gum prices. In contrast, demand for guar churi from the animal-feed sector remains steady, supporting by-product values and indirectly underpinning seed. Export-oriented gum demand is further complicated by cost-conscious buyers and competition from alternative hydrocolloids.
Fundamentals & External Drivers
Fundamentals along the value chain are diverging. Seed and churi are driven primarily by tight physical availability and acreage risks, while gum reflects end-user demand and export competitiveness. The net effect is a narrowing margin for processors, encouraging cautious procurement and occasionally opportunistic selling of gum inventories.
Volatile international energy markets continue to lend speculative support to guar futures, given guar gum’s importance in oil and gas drilling and fracturing fluids. However, this financial interest has not translated into a strong spot gum rally because physical industrial demand remains weak. Any sustained recovery in oilfield activity or a shift in energy-sector procurement could quickly tighten the balance, but for now the futures-led support is capped by lackluster real consumption.
Short-Term Outlook & Trading Ideas
- Seed bias mildly bullish: As long as planting expectations in Rajasthan stay lower and farmer selling is limited, guar seed is likely to remain firm with a gentle upward bias in EUR terms.
- Gum sideways to soft: Without a clear pickup in industrial or export demand, guar gum prices may trade in a slightly softer to sideways range despite energy-market volatility.
- Churi supported by feed demand: Stable animal-feed requirements should keep guar churi well bid, helping to floor downside in seed values.
- Risk focus: Monitor monsoon progress and acreage revisions closely; any improvement in sowing or a sharp downturn in energy markets could trigger a correction in seed and futures.
3-Day Directional View (EUR terms)
- Guar seed (Rajasthan/Ahmedabad): Slightly firmer to stable; modest upside possible on continued tightness.
- Guar gum (India export parity): Stable to marginally softer as buyers remain price-sensitive.
- Guar churi: Firm tone expected, with limited downside given animal-feed demand.
