Guar Seeds Tighten as Indian Acreage Falls and Demand Rebounds

Concise guar seeds market analysis: lower Rajasthan acreage, firm industrial and feed demand, and cautious selling support prices in India and FOB guar gum.

Indian guar seeds and the broader guar complex are trading with a firm undertone as tighter supply from reduced acreage meets improving industrial and feed demand. With stockists turning cautious on forward sales and export interest in guar gum stabilising, price risks remain skewed to the upside in the short term. India’s guar complex has strengthened on a combination of lower planted area in Rajasthan, better industrial offtake and solid export and feed demand. Rajasthan’s guar acreage is estimated about 10% lower at 22.35 lakh hectares, tightening new-crop expectations and encouraging stockists to restrict selling. Guar seed prices have climbed, while guar gum and guar churi are also firmer, reflecting improved downstream usage in oilfield, industrial and animal-feed segments. International FOB indications for guar gum from India and Vietnam show only marginal easing in late August, suggesting that the recent domestic gains largely reflect local supply constraints rather than a sharp external demand shock.

Prices

Recent domestic indications place guar seed around EUR 61–62 per quintal (converted from about USD 67.60–68.12), with guar gum near EUR 120–121 per quintal for the stronger market and roughly EUR 114–115 per quintal at the lower quotation band. Guar churi has firmed to approximately EUR 33–34 per quintal, tracking better demand from the animal-feed sector.

Export-oriented guar gum values on an FOB basis remain relatively stable. Recent offers for organic guar gum powder stand near EUR 3.70–3.75/kg FOB India and around EUR 3.65–3.70/kg FOB Vietnam, only slightly below earlier August levels, which underscores that domestic firmness in India is driven more by supply-side tightening than by a broad-based drop in international appetite.

Supply & Demand

On the supply side, Rajasthan’s guar acreage is reported about 10% lower at 22.35 lakh hectares. This area reduction tightens forward balance sheets and raises sensitivity to any monsoon disruptions. Lower expected output has already led stockists and farmers to restrict selling, reducing spot availability and supporting prices.

Demand conditions are constructive. Industrial consumption and export demand for guar gum, particularly from oilfield and industrial users, are improving from earlier weak levels. In parallel, stronger offtake for guar churi in the animal-feed sector indicates robust demand for by-products, which reinforces processing margins and supports seed procurement.

Fundamentals & Weather

Fundamentals across the guar complex point to a tighter balance. The combination of reduced acreage, disciplined selling by stockists and resilient downstream usage creates a supportive backdrop for both seeds and value-added products. Even modest demand growth can translate into disproportionate price moves under these conditions.

Weather in key guar-growing areas of Rajasthan remains the main short-term risk factor. With acreage already lower, a normal to slightly below-normal rainfall finish to the monsoon would still keep supplies constrained, while any further moisture stress could amplify yield risks and extend the current firm tone into the new marketing season.

Trading Outlook

  • Producers/Farmers: The current firm structure suggests holding a portion of stocks where liquidity allows, while using incremental rallies to hedge a fraction of expected output, given weather and demand uncertainties.
  • Industrial buyers: Consider staggered coverage for guar gum needs rather than waiting for significant corrections, as lower acreage and cautious selling may limit downside in the near term.
  • Feed manufacturers: With guar churi strengthening, early procurement or formula flexibility could help manage cost risk if feed demand remains robust into Q4.

3-Day Directional View (EUR)

  • India – guar seed: Slightly firmer bias; tight farmer selling and lower acreage keep dips shallow.
  • India – guar gum (FOB): Mostly steady to mildly firm; export demand and currency moves to guide near-term adjustments.
  • Vietnam – guar gum (FOB): Stable with a mild upward bias, tracking Indian values and regional demand.
