Lentils Hold Range as Indian Masoor Demand Meets Ample Canadian & Australian Supply

Masoor lentils stay range-bound as Indian festival demand offsets weak mills and ample Canadian/Australian supply. See prices, drivers and short-term outlook.

Domestic masoor remains broadly range-bound, with weaker mill demand weighing on prices while firm festival buying and abundant overseas supplies cap any upside. Indian markets are entering the peak festival window with robust demand from Bihar, West Bengal and Assam, yet this is offset by higher production expectations in Australia and Canada and steady imported supplies. Domestic masoor arrivals are declining seasonally, lending some support to physical markets, but wholesale masoor prices across India are still only moderately higher on the month, up around 9–10% in many mandis, indicating contained bullish momentum.

Prices

Domestic masoor in India is trading in a modestly firmer band, with the national modal wholesale price around ₹6,800 per quintal as of 20 September 2026, roughly 9–10% higher than a month ago, but still well within historical seasonal ranges.

Retail masoor dal prices average about ₹88/kg at the all-India level, underscoring healthy consumer demand but not yet signaling a tightness severe enough to trigger a price spike.

On the export side, Canadian FOB values in Ottawa have softened slightly over the past month: red football lentils from CA are indicated at 2.19 EUR FOB (down from 2.22 EUR), Laird green at 1.28 EUR FOB (previously 1.32 EUR), and Eston green at 1.24 EUR FOB (down from 1.28 EUR). Chinese small green lentils show a mixed pattern, with organic 99.5% purity at 1 EUR FOB Beijing (down from 1.02 EUR), while conventional small green 99.5% purity trades at 0.96 EUR FOB (slightly above 0.95 EUR).

Supply & Demand

Domestically, masoor is seeing weakened mill buying, which is limiting any upward price break, even as arrivals into physical markets have started to decline seasonally. At the same time, festival-led demand from eastern consuming states such as Bihar, West Bengal and Assam has turned supportive, in line with higher mandi prices recently reported in these regions.

Globally, sentiment is capped by expectations of strong exportable supplies from both Australia and Canada. Recent official projections point to burdensome Canadian lentil carry-in stocks and only a marginal decline in 2026/27 production, leaving overall supply still comfortable.  In Australia, earlier outlooks already flagged a significant expansion in red lentil area and production, reinforcing the perception of ample global availability despite pockets of weather uncertainty.

Fundamentals & Weather

From a fundamental standpoint, the key bearish factor is the combination of large Canadian and Australian supplies and record or near-record carry-out stocks, which temper importer urgency and keep imported masoor offers competitive into South Asia.

On the supportive side, Indian wholesale masoor prices are seasonally firm into the festival period and domestic arrivals are declining, indicating that any logistics or policy disruptions in imports could quickly translate into firmer spot values. However, current policy and trade flows remain normal, and no major weather shock has yet emerged to curtail North American or Australian export programs in the very short term.

Recent agroclimate assessments for Canada suggest above-normal late-season temperatures with mixed precipitation patterns in parts of the Prairies, but without clear evidence of widespread damage to pulse crops in the final stages of the growing and harvest window.

Short-Term Outlook & Trading Ideas

Given the interplay of soft mill demand, seasonal festival buying and heavy global supplies, masoor is expected to remain broadly range-bound in the near term, in line with the prevailing market outlook.

  • Importers / Traders: Use current slightly weaker Canadian FOB values to secure near-term coverage, but avoid overbuying given comfortable global stocks and the risk of post-festival demand softening.
  • Millers: Stagger purchases, taking advantage of any intra-festival dips triggered by weak demand days; avoid chasing rallies unless there are visible disruptions in import flows.
  • Producers (India): With prices supported but capped, consider calibrated selling into the current firmness, retaining some inventory as a hedge against any sudden import or weather shock.

3-Day Directional Price View

  • India (domestic masoor mandis): Slightly firm to steady over the next 2–3 days as festival demand offsets softer mills, but within the recent trading band.
  • Canada FOB (red & green lentils): Mildly soft tone with a sideways bias, reflecting heavy stocks and limited fresh buying interest.
  • China FOB (small green lentils): Largely stable, with only marginal adjustments expected in the very short term.
