Indian Chickpea Prices Edge Higher as MSP Support Meets Cool, Wet May

Indian chickpea prices in Delhi edge higher as MSP-backed procurement, steady demand and mild, rainy May weather support a sideways-to-firm short-term outlook.

Indian chickpea prices in New Delhi are drifting modestly higher, with FCA values for key kabuli sizes up around 2–3% week-on-week in euro terms. Government MSP-backed procurement and limited import competition are underpinning the market, while cool, showery May weather in northern India poses little immediate threat to the just-harvested rabi crop but may slow logistics. Indian chickpea markets are entering a consolidation phase after recent softness in April. State and central procurement of chana under MSP schemes, recently extended in several states, is absorbing part of the surplus and discouraging distress selling, effectively putting a floor under prices. At the same time, higher duties on substitute yellow peas and a soft rupee are curbing aggressive imports, keeping domestic demand flowing towards chickpeas. Unseasonably mild, occasionally wet conditions across much of India have eased heat stress, limiting any weather premium. Near-term, Delhi prices are likely to trade sideways to slightly firmer as arrivals taper and policy support remains in place.

Wholesale desi chickpea prices in Delhi are reported stable to mildly firmer, holding in a narrow EUR 0.63–0.66/kg band, consistent with the marginal uptick seen in kabuli offers.

Supply & Demand

Recent policy moves show New Delhi reinforcing MSP-based procurement for pulses, including chana, with approvals to prevent distress sales and ensure remunerative prices. Madhya Pradesh has separately extended procurement windows and earmarked support funds, confirming an active state presence in the market. These measures tighten free-market availability and support price levels in major trading hubs such as Delhi.

On the demand side, dal mills had earlier reduced purchases, triggering a modest price correction, but evidence suggests that selling interest at lower levels is waning as distributors recognize the MSP floor. Import competition from yellow peas is constrained by a 30% duty and currency effects, diminishing the incentive for large-scale replacements and keeping domestic processors oriented towards chickpeas. Some institutional tenders, such as a recent 34,000-kg kala chana tender in Uttar Pradesh, highlight steady consumption needs from public programmes.

Fundamentals & Weather

The 2025–26 rabi season confirmed chickpeas as India’s leading pulse, with agronomic literature again emphasizing its central role and sizeable planted area. With harvest largely complete, short-term weather risk to yield is limited. The more immediate impact of current conditions is on transport, storage and quality maintenance rather than field performance.

IMD’s latest monthly outlook for May 2026 calls for cooler-than-usual conditions for many parts of India due to widespread rainfall, though pockets of northwest India may still see above-normal temperatures. A specific update for Delhi and NCR indicates spells of rain, thunderstorms and gusty winds in early May. For chickpeas, this pattern is broadly neutral to slightly supportive: it reduces heat damage risk to stored stocks but can temporarily slow arrivals and truck movement into Delhi markets, modestly tightening short-term spot supply.

Short-Term Outlook (India, Region IN)

Weather over New Delhi through the next three days (9–12 May 2026) is forecast to remain warm but not extreme, with highs in the mid-30s °C, partly cloudy skies and only low-to-moderate rain chances. This should allow normal mandi operations, with only brief disruptions if local showers occur.

Price Direction: Next 3 Days – New Delhi Chickpeas

  • Desi chickpeas (wholesale Delhi): Sideways to slightly firm, expected to remain roughly in the EUR 0.63–0.66/kg zone as MSP-backed procurement caps downside.
  • Kabuli chickpeas, 42–46 count, FCA Delhi: Bias mildly upward, with offers likely to hold or edge up by up to EUR 0.01/kg if arrivals stay moderate.
  • Smaller kabuli sizes (58–62 count): Stable; any additional firmness depends on export enquiry, which currently appears steady rather than aggressive.

Trading Outlook

  • Importers / Domestic buyers: Use current consolidation to secure nearby coverage; downside is limited by MSP and procurement policy, while cool, wet May weather and logistics could tighten spot supply on short notice.
  • Exporters (India): With FOB prices broadly steady and India competitive versus other origins, focus on freight optimization and grade differentiation rather than price cuts; monitor any policy tweaks to pulse imports that could alter domestic availability.
  • Producers / Stockists: Given the policy floor and modest firming, staggered sales through May appear preferable to heavy liquidation, especially for better kabuli grades closest to MSP support.
