Rapeseed futures rebound on MATIF after a sharp weekly loss, but heavier global oilseed supply, brisk Ukrainian exports and record palm stocks keep rallies limited.
Prices
On Euronext (MATIF), rapeseed futures closed on 12 October with a broadly stable curve: November 2026 at EUR 517.00/t, February 2027 at EUR 552.25/t, May 2027 at EUR 556.50/t and August 2027 at EUR 533.50/t, with further contracts gradually easing into 2028. Open interest remains concentrated in the February 2027 contract, signalling strong liquidity for early‑2027 hedging.
These levels mark a recovery from last week’s low near EUR 502.00/t for the November 2026 contract, which left the market roughly 6.5% lower week‑on‑week before Monday’s rebound. Over the last 20 sessions, the nearby rapeseed contract has retreated from a high above EUR 550/t, leaving prices still around 6% below mid‑September despite the latest corrective bounce. Speculative funds remain sizeable net buyers in Euronext rapeseed, cushioning the downside but not yet reversing the broader downward trend.

In the physical market, indicative European rapeseed offers remain firm relative to futures. Recent quotations include Rape seeds FOB Paris, FR at EUR 0.64, and Ukrainian Rape seeds 42% min oil FCA Odesa at EUR 0.46 and FCA Kyiv at EUR 0.45. Ukrainian Rape seeds grade 1, < 35 mcm CPT Odesa eased to EUR 0.436 from EUR 0.445, reflecting slightly softer Black Sea basis despite firm futures.
Supply & Demand Drivers
The oilseed complex is currently dominated by soybean and palm fundamentals. The latest USDA WASDE raised the US soybean crop forecast by about 700,000 tonnes to 124.15 million tonnes, increasing the projected average yield from 52.8 to 53.1 bushels per acre. This more comfortable US balance continues to weigh on global oilseed prices and limits spillover strength for rapeseed.
In Brazil, soybean sowing is advancing at an unusually fast pace, with roughly one‑fifth of the expected area already planted thanks to an early onset of the rainy season. This raises the prospect of an earlier and potentially large Brazilian harvest, reinforcing expectations of abundant soybean supply into early 2027. Together with improving US supplies, this caps upside for rapeseed via the broader oilseed and meal market.
On the vegetable oil side, Malaysian palm oil remains a key reference. Palm futures initially gained on Monday, supported by stronger export data, before easing again on Tuesday morning. However, record‑high Malaysian palm oil stocks of around 3.51 million tonnes at end‑September and record monthly production above 2.12 million tonnes underscore a heavy supply backdrop. These ample palm supplies limit the ability of rapeseed oil to extend rallies, even when short‑term corrections occur.
Trade flows further underline comfortable availability. Ukraine shipped about 431,000 tonnes of rapeseed in September, with roughly 420,000 tonnes destined for the EU, alongside record exports of rapeseed oil (around 157,000 tonnes) and meal (about 140,000 tonnes). This strong Black Sea presence keeps EU crushers well supplied and weighs on Black Sea basis values, as reflected in the recent softening of CPT Odesa rapeseed indications.

Fundamentals & Correlations
Rapeseed prices are being pulled between heavy global fundamentals and pockets of strength in energy and biodiesel demand. A weaker euro against the US dollar supports euro‑denominated futures and export competitiveness, partially offsetting pressure from larger oilseed balances. At the same time, crude oil’s recent strength has periodically lifted the vegetable oil complex, including palm, rapeseed oil and canola, providing short‑lived support to seed prices.
The soy complex remains a central driver. Chicago soybean futures have been capped by negative crush margins in China and the expectation that Chinese crushers will slow operations in the coming weeks. This, along with the USDA’s higher US production estimate and Brazil’s record planting pace, limits upside for soybean oil and meal. Because rapeseed competes directly in vegoil and protein meal markets, this broader weakness continues to restrain any sustained rally in rapeseed futures.
Speculative and technical factors are also relevant. After a sharp 6.5% drop in the November MATIF contract ahead of expiry, much of the move appears to have been technically driven rather than fundamentally justified, with sizable net‑long fund positioning cushioning further losses. The futures curve from November 2026 to May 2027 now shows only a moderate carry of around EUR 35–40/t, signalling a market that is no longer heavily inverted but still rewards nearby coverage into early 2027 as long as spot remains under harvest and import pressure.
Short-Term Outlook & Weather
Near term, rapeseed is likely to trade in a consolidation band, with MATIF November 2026 anchored by the EUR 500–520/t area as harvest pressure and strong Black Sea flows offset intermittent support from crude and palm oil. Any decisive break below recent lows would likely require further bearish news on soybeans or palm, while a sustained move above late‑September highs would need either a fresh weather scare or a sharp, durable rally in the broader vegoil complex.
Weather currently offers limited bullish impetus. North American canola harvest is advancing under generally favourable Prairie conditions, adding to available seed supplies. In South America, early and widespread rains are enabling rapid soybean sowing, which, if maintained, will further weigh on global oilseed sentiment into early 2027. For Europe, no acute weather threat to winter rapeseed establishment is in focus right now, keeping the emphasis on demand and trade flows rather than production risk.
Trading Outlook
- Producers (EU & Black Sea): Use current rebounds above EUR 500/t on November and the EUR 550/t area on February/March 2027 to extend incremental hedge coverage, especially where on‑farm stocks are still sizeable and logistics are secure.
- Crushers: Maintain a balanced approach by locking in a portion of Q4 2026–Q1 2027 seed needs against the current flat‑to‑modest‑carry futures curve, while keeping some spot and basis flexibility given the strong flow of Ukrainian seed and products.
- Importers & industrial buyers: Consider layering in coverage for late 2026 and early 2027 during price dips driven by soy or palm weakness, but avoid chasing short‑term rallies unless confirmed by tighter physical availabilities or a clear upturn in vegoil demand.
3-Day Directional View
- MATIF Rapeseed (nearby, EUR/t): Sideways to slightly firmer; support around 500, resistance near 525 as the market digests the recent rebound and awaits fresh input from crude and palm.
- ICE Canola (CAD/t): Mildly supported but capped by ongoing harvest pressure; likely to track moves in Chicago soyoil and Malaysian palm with a slight upward bias if crude remains firm.
- Black Sea Physical (Ukraine, EUR, FCA/CPT): Slightly softer bias on basis as export flows remain strong and logistics normalise, though any new disruptions around key ports could quickly tighten nearby offers.
