SAFEX sunflower futures firm while Ukrainian seed, kernel and oil prices soften. Overview of supply, demand, weather and short-term trading outlook.

Sunflower markets are bifurcating: SAFEX futures in South Africa are grinding higher on tight local balance sheets, while Black Sea cash values for seeds, kernels and crude oil edge lower amid an advancing Ukrainian harvest and export bottlenecks. Sunflower oil remains relatively well-supported in global vegoil benchmarks, but nearby physical premiums are easing from early-season highs as new-crop flows build. In Ukraine, harvesting is progressing and capacity is theoretically sufficient to crush most of the crop, yet logistics risks and port attacks continue to cap export confidence and keep crushers cautious. Against this backdrop, processors in the Black Sea are testing buyers with slightly lower seed and meal quotations, while South African futures price in a risk premium for weather and import parity. Volatility is likely to stay elevated into the heart of Northern Hemisphere harvest and Southern Hemisphere planting.

Prices

SAFEX sunflower futures closed higher across the nearby curve on 22 October 2026. October 2026 settled at 10,509 ZAR/t (+0.94% day-on-day), November 2026 at 10,524 ZAR/t (+0.53%), and December 2026 at 10,619 ZAR/t (+1.16%). The March 2027 contract also firmed to 9,900 ZAR/t, up 1.71% on the day, signalling a constructive forward structure and weather/availability risk being priced in domestically.

In contrast, Black Sea cash quotations in EUR show mild softening. Ukrainian black sunflower seeds FCA Odesa eased to 0.39 EUR/kg from 0.41 EUR/kg, while FCA Kyiv holds at 0.41 EUR/kg. FOB Odesa black seeds are indicated at 0.565 EUR/kg, slightly below earlier October levels. Sunflower kernels meal FOB Odesa are quoted at 0.543 EUR/kg, down from 0.545 EUR/kg, and crude sunflower oil CPT Odesa at 1.032 EUR/kg versus 1.044 EUR/kg previously. Hulled bakery kernels in Bulgaria (FCA Sofia) are steady to marginally softer around 0.92 EUR/kg, whereas premium bakery kernels FCA Berlin have jumped to 1.08 EUR/kg, reflecting strong EU snack and bakery demand.

Supply & Demand

In Ukraine, sunflower remains the core oilseed, with harvested and projected areas this year above 5.2 million hectares, underpinning substantial seed availability despite war-related constraints. Recent reports indicate sunflower harvesting is well underway but still some distance from completion, with around 14% of the planted area cut as of late September and good yields near 2.0 t/ha in early regions. This confirms a solid crop base for MY 2026/27.

Processing capacity clearly exceeds seed supply: local crushing plants can theoretically process nearly the entire crop, but actual utilisation depends on export channels for oil and meal and the integrity of inland logistics and port infrastructure. Meanwhile, global sunflower oil prices, though off recent four-year highs above USD 1,500/t earlier in 2026, remain elevated relative to competing oils, sustaining incentives to crush. In South Africa, by contrast, tighter local stock levels and import-parity pricing keep the domestic balance sheet more constrained, helping to explain the firmer SAFEX structure.

Fundamentals & Drivers

Several key factors are steering today’s sunflower complex. First, the advancing Ukrainian harvest is adding physical length, allowing crushers to bid slightly lower for seed and meal while still covering near-term needs. Second, global vegoil benchmarks have corrected modestly from early-season spikes, pressuring crude sunflower oil indications in the Black Sea, as seen in the CPT Odesa price slip.

Third, logistics and war risks remain a critical wild card. Damage to export terminals and episodic disruptions in Black Sea shipping lanes have created a two-tier market: well-located seed and oil with secure export routes still command premiums, while inland or logistically challenged origins must discount to move volume. Finally, in the EU, robust snack, bakery and confectionery demand is supporting high-grade hulled kernels, visible in stronger FCA prices in Germany, even as bulk crushing seed values soften.

Weather Outlook

Weather in key Ukrainian sunflower regions (including Odesa and Dnipro areas) is currently seasonally mild, with daytime highs around the high 50s to mid‑60s °F and cool, mostly dry nights. These conditions are generally favourable for ongoing harvest, reducing field losses and drying costs.

No major storm systems are flagged over the next several days that would materially disrupt cutting or transport, though isolated showers could slow operations locally. For South Africa, early-planting windows are being watched closely; any emergence of hot, dry spells in the coming weeks would likely reinforce the weather risk premium already visible in the SAFEX curve.

Trading Outlook

  • Importers / crushers (EU & MENA): Use current weakness in Black Sea FOB/FCA seed and crude oil prices to extend coverage for Q4 2026–Q1 2027, especially if logistics routes are pre-secured. Stagger purchases to manage ongoing geopolitical risk.
  • Farmers (Ukraine & Black Sea): With cash bids easing but still historically attractive versus multi-year averages, consider selling a portion of unpriced seed on post-harvest rallies, while retaining some upside via storage where financing and security allow.
  • South African users: Given firm SAFEX levels, hedge input costs on price dips rather than at current highs. Watch for any softening in international sunflower oil values that could cap further upside in domestic futures.
  • Speculators: The divergence between rising SAFEX and softening Black Sea cash offers spread opportunities; focus on weather developments in South Africa and any fresh news on Ukrainian export infrastructure.

3‑Day Price Indications

  • SAFEX sunflower futures: Bias moderately upward in the near term as markets continue to price weather and import-parity risk.
  • Black Sea sunflower seeds & meal (Ukraine, Moldova, Bulgaria): Slight downward to sideways drift expected as harvest pressure persists and crushers manage ample near-term seed availability.
  • Sunflower kernels (EU snack/bakery qualities): Stable to firm, especially premium bakery and confection grades in Germany and Bulgaria, supported by strong downstream demand.
  • Crude sunflower oil (Ukraine CPT Odesa): Mildly soft tone in line with global vegoil benchmarks, but downside limited by still-tight relative spreads versus competing oils.
