Sunflower market October 2026: firm SAFEX futures, easing Black Sea seed prices, mixed kernel values and constrained sunflower oil logistics.

Sunflower markets are currently balanced between firm futures on SAFEX and soft physical seed prices in the Black Sea, with sunflower oil logistics still acting as the main bullish factor. Nearby price risk is skewed mildly to the upside for oil and high-end kernels, while bulk seed remains under harvest pressure. The complex enters late October with South African futures consolidating above ZAR 10,500/t, even as Ukrainian and Moldovan seed offers edge lower and meal prices soften. Ample Black Sea seed availability contrasts with constrained sunflower oil exports, keeping crush margins attractive in Ukraine and Russia and supporting premiums for refined oil into Europe and Asia. In Europe, bakery and confection kernels show mixed moves, with Bulgarian offers notably higher into Germany, while bulk black seeds from Ukraine remain competitive. Weather in key origins is seasonally benign, so logistics and policy, rather than yields, dominate the short-term outlook.

Prices

On SAFEX, sunflower futures are broadly steady to marginally softer after recent gains. The December 2026 contract last settled around ZAR 10,600/t, down ZAR 19 on October 23, while the spot-linked November contract fixed at ZAR 10,524/t, unchanged on the day. Overall SAFEX levels remain elevated compared with early October, reflecting tight domestic South African stock cover and resilient crush demand.

In the Black Sea, physical sunflower seed and meal quotations in EUR show a gentle downward drift over the month. Ukrainian black sunflower seeds FCA Odesa are indicated at EUR 0.39/kg, down from EUR 0.41/kg in mid-October, while FOB Odesa seeds eased to EUR 0.565/kg from EUR 0.571/kg at the start of the month. Sunflower meal FOB Odesa stands at EUR 0.543/kg versus EUR 0.551/kg in early October, confirming gradual margin-friendly softening on the seed and by-product side.

Kernel prices are more mixed. Ukrainian bakery-grade hulled kernels FCA Dnipro are stable at EUR 0.90/kg. Bulgarian bakery kernels FCA Sofia trade at EUR 0.92/kg, while premium bakery kernels of Bulgarian origin FCA Berlin jumped to EUR 1.08/kg from EUR 0.92/kg in mid-month. Moldovan bakery kernels FCA Rheinfelden Herten hold at EUR 0.93/kg. Chinese confection kernels FOB Beijing eased to EUR 1.03/kg from EUR 1.08/kg earlier in the month, while organic Chinese confection kernels rose modestly to EUR 1.26/kg.

Supply & Demand

South African supply expectations remain comfortable but not abundant. Recent analysis points to higher sunflower output in 2025/26 versus the prior season, yet ending stocks stay relatively tight in days-of-use terms, helping to underpin JSE/SAFEX values despite global seed softness. Domestic crushers are thus prepared to pay to secure coverage into the first quarter of 2027.

In the Black Sea, Ukraine and Russia are harvesting sizable sunflower crops, with market participants estimating Ukraine’s 2026 crop above last year’s level and noting that lower farmgate prices have not fully revived demand. Ample seed availability is therefore colliding with constrained export capacity, pushing more seed into domestic crushing and keeping raw seed prices under pressure while protecting crush margins.

Logistics remain the critical bottleneck. Reports highlight that export capacity, not crop size, is the main constraint, as port disruptions and elevated freight and insurance costs limit flows from the Black Sea. Ukrainian officials stress that sunflower oil exports continue via all available routes, but delays and rerouting raise costs and extend lead times, particularly for deliveries into the EU and MENA. This helps explain why seeds and meal soften while refined oil values stay relatively firm.

Fundamentals & Weather

Fundamentals are split between bearish raw material and bullish product signals. SAFEX sunflower futures around ZAR 10,600/t mirror concerns over local stock tightness and competition from soybeans, while Black Sea seed values—such as Russian sunflowerseed FOB Black Sea at around $291/t on October 23—point to comfortable origin supply. Seed prices in Ukraine recently fell to multi-year lows under harvest pressure and export uncertainty, reinforcing this supply-heavy backdrop.

Crush economics are generally favourable. Weaker seed and meal prices in Russia and Ukraine contrast with still-expensive vegetable oil benchmarks, enabling processors to maintain solid margins even as they grapple with export bottlenecks. This supports ongoing high crush utilisation and ensures sustained availability of sunflower meal for feed users, while keeping edible oil prices relatively elevated in destination markets.

Weather is not a primary driver in late October. Harvest weather across much of Ukraine and southern Russia has been largely cooperative, allowing rapid intake at plants. In South Africa, current conditions are broadly seasonally normal, with no immediate large-scale threat to planting or early crop development being reported in the last few days. As a result, logistics, policy and currency movements are much more important for near-term price direction than any weather shocks.

Outlook & Trading Recommendations

Short-term outlook (next 2–4 weeks)

  • SAFEX sunflower futures: sideways to slightly softer bias after the recent run-up, with strong support around current levels as long as domestic stock cover remains tight and the rand does not appreciate sharply.
  • Black Sea sunflower seeds: mild downward drift likely to continue while harvest inflow stays strong and export capacity is constrained; deeper declines may be limited by robust crush margins and oil values.
  • Sunflower oil and premium kernels: relatively firm, supported by logistics costs and stable downstream demand in the EU and Asia.

Trading ideas

  • South African crushers and feed users: Consider layering in additional SAFEX coverage on moderate price dips, focusing on December 2026 and March 2027, as current levels still reflect a reasonable balance between local tightness and global seed softness.
  • European buyers of kernels and seeds: Use current weakness in Ukrainian FCA/FOB seed and meal prices to extend nearby coverage, while remaining selective on high-priced Bulgarian bakery kernels, which have already moved higher.
  • Black Sea origin sellers: Prioritise sales into destinations with reliable overland or short-sea logistics and flexible shipment windows; avoid overcommitting to tight laycan periods given ongoing port and freight uncertainty.
