Sunflower Market: SAFEX Rebounds While Seed and Oil Values Ease
Concise sunflower market update: SAFEX futures rebound, Black Sea harvest pressure softens seed and oil prices, with kernels relatively stable.
Prices
SAFEX sunflower futures have staged a clear recovery since the end of September. The October 2026 contract closed on 13 October at ZAR 10,449/t, up 0.47% on the day and more than 4.5% above the ZAR 9,986/t settlement recorded on 30 September, while December 2026 settled at ZAR 10,539/t (+0.28%). The March 2027 contract is slightly softer at ZAR 9,768/t (−0.04%), and May 2027 near ZAR 9,575/t (+0.03%), leaving a mildly inverted nearby structure that reflects strong short-term demand for seed and crush.

Physical seed and product quotations in EUR show a gentle softening in the Black Sea and a broadly stable picture in the EU and China. Ukrainian black sunflower seeds stand around EUR 0.41–0.42/kg FCA Kyiv and Odesa in early October, slightly below mid-September levels. In Moldova and Bulgaria, black seeds FCA remain at EUR 0.44/kg, while striped seeds FOB Bulgaria hold at EUR 0.74/kg, indicating that confection and birdfeed segments are more resilient.
Kernel prices are comparatively firm. Conventional bakery kernels FCA Dnipro (Ukraine) are indicated at EUR 0.90/kg, with Bulgarian and Moldovan bakery kernels into the EU quoted at EUR 0.92–0.93/kg FCA, and Bulgarian confection kernels at EUR 1.16/kg FCA. Chinese confection kernels FOB Beijing trade around EUR 1.08/kg (conventional) and EUR 1.23/kg (organic), while Chinese bakery kernels are at EUR 1.22/kg FOB. Sunflower meal FOB Odesa is slightly easier around EUR 0.547/kg, mirroring weaker seed and oil values.
On the oil side, crude sunflower oil CPT Odesa has softened from EUR 1.176/kg in mid-September to around EUR 1.024/kg in early October, even as international references for FOB Black Sea sunflower oil remain supported by export constraints and Ukrainian policy floors in the USD market. Recent third-party assessments point to roughly USD 1,130/t FOB Black Sea for November shipment, suggesting that local CPT/cross-border values may have limited further downside despite cheaper seeds.
Supply & Demand
South African futures are reacting not only to local fundamentals but also to global dynamics. The current rebound on SAFEX follows aggressive harvest selling and a weaker forward curve reported at the end of September, when both October and March 2027 contracts were under pressure from ample near-term supplies. The subsequent recovery suggests that end-users and crushers have been willing to lock in coverage at lower price levels, tightening nearby availability.
In the Black Sea, the 2026/27 sunflower crop is widely regarded as large, with record or near-record production in key origins weighing on seed prices. Ukraine’s sunflower harvest is effectively complete and the crop is in storage or moving through the export pipeline. Recent market commentary continues to describe seed prices as under harvest pressure, though not collapsing, as crushers step in to secure volumes and some farmers delay sales in anticipation of better prices later in the marketing year.
Export flows are gradually picking up despite ongoing logistics and security challenges. Ukraine’s total agricultural exports rose sharply in September, and sunflower oil shipments continue via all available routes, although they remain below their full potential. Improved access to Black Sea and alternative corridors is slowly easing logistical bottlenecks, but freight and insurance costs still constrain arbitrage and temper demand from more distant buyers.

Fundamentals & Weather
Fundamentals across the complex lean slightly bearish for seeds but more balanced for oil and kernels. On the seed side, ample Black Sea and Moldovan crops and a modest recovery in EU sunflower prospects compared with earlier fears provide comfortable raw material availability. Industry monitoring indicates that EU sunflower yield expectations have improved slightly relative to the five-year average as late-season weather turned more favourable, particularly in parts of south-eastern Europe.
By contrast, sunflower oil supply is less burdensome than seed availability would suggest. Ukraine remains a pivotal exporter, yet official policy and minimum export price mechanisms help prevent a steep drop in FOB quotations. At the same time, competing vegetable oils, notably rapeseed oil, have seen stronger export growth from Ukraine and the EU, absorbing some demand that might otherwise have shifted more aggressively into sunflower oil.
Edible kernel demand from bakery, snack and health-food segments in Europe and Asia remains structurally firm. The narrow spreads between Ukrainian, Bulgarian and Moldovan bakery kernels around EUR 0.90–0.93/kg FCA, and the premium for higher-spec confection kernels up to EUR 1.16–1.23/kg, indicate that buyers are still willing to pay for quality and origin differentiation. The relative stability of these kernel prices compared with more volatile seed and oil values confirms that consumer end-use demand is cushioning the downside.
Weather outlook
Weather risk for the current sunflower marketing year is low. In Ukraine, the main sunflower crop has already been harvested, and the recent dry, warm spell in early October is considered a normal autumn pattern without implications for supply. Rain forecast over the coming week should recharge topsoil ahead of winter but will only matter for next spring’s sowing decisions, not for the 2026 crop now in storage.
Elsewhere in Europe, no major late-season weather threats are reported for sunflower. Agrometeorological reports from Moldova point to national average yields around the 10-year norm, while EU crop monitoring continues to describe sunflower prospects as slightly better than previously expected. With the weather largely neutral to positive, market attention is firmly on logistics, macroeconomic conditions and competition from other oilseeds.
Trading Outlook
- Seed buyers (EU, Middle East, Asia): Harvest pressure and the recent easing in Black Sea and Ukrainian FCA/FOB values favour a "buy-on-dips" strategy for nearby coverage. However, consider staggering purchases over the next 4–6 weeks, as farmers may accelerate selling if storage and financing costs rise.
- Oil buyers: Crude sunflower oil CPT Odesa has retreated markedly since mid-September, but export policy floors and freight risks limit further downside. Users with flexible oilseeds input should continue to compare sunflower with rapeseed and soybean oil, but avoid being excessively under-covered into Q1 2027 in case logistics tighten again.
- Kernel buyers: Given the resilience of bakery and confection kernel prices around EUR 0.90–1.23/kg, downside appears limited. Snack and bakery industries should prioritize securing high-spec material through at least the first quarter of 2027, while remaining opportunistic on origin spreads between Ukraine, Bulgaria and Moldova.
- Producers and crushers: The SAFEX rebound and relatively firm kernel and oil markets argue for disciplined selling rather than aggressive forward hedging at current levels. Consider scaling in price protection on rallies, particularly if local currency strength or weaker global vegetable oil markets erode processing margins.
3‑Day Regional Price Outlook
- SAFEX (South Africa): After the recent rebound, October and December 2026 contracts are expected to trade sideways to slightly higher over the next three sessions, with volatility driven by currency moves and spill-over from global vegetable oils.
- Black Sea (Ukraine, Moldova, Bulgaria): Sunflower seed FCA/FOB prices are likely to remain under mild downward pressure as harvest selling continues, but the pace of decline should slow as crushers and exporters increase coverage.
- EU kernel market (Germany, Poland, Balkans): Bakery and confection kernel quotations are forecast to stay broadly stable, with only marginal day-to-day adjustments as buyers fine-tune coverage and evaluate freight spreads between origins.
- Sunflower oil (Ukraine FOB/CPT): Crude sunflower oil values are expected to hold within a narrow range, supported by export constraints and policy floors even as seeds remain cheap. Any fresh logistics disruption could quickly tilt this balance to the upside.
