Sunflower market update: SAFEX nearby contracts slip, Ukrainian seed prices ease, while sunflower oil stays firm on logistics constraints. Concise trading outlook.

Sunflower markets are turning slightly softer on seeds and futures, while sunflower oil prices remain relatively firm due to logistics constraints and strong Black Sea benchmarks. The complex is currently split between weak seed values and resilient oil quotations. SAFEX sunflower futures in South Africa eased on the nearby months, reflecting comfortable local supply and some spillover from declining Ukrainian seed prices. At the same time, global sunflower oil remains underpinned by freight bottlenecks and delayed shipments out of the Black Sea, even as palm and soybean oil have corrected lower. Export demand for Ukrainian seed is improving, which helps stabilise prices but has not yet reversed the downward trend in origination regions.

Prices

SAFEX sunflower contracts on 3 November 2026 show a modestly bearish tone on the nearby months. The November 2026 contract closed at ZAR 10,330/t, down ZAR 70 (‑0.68%) day-on-day, while December 2026 settled at ZAR 10,375/t, down ZAR 73 (‑0.70%). Further out, March 2027 gained ZAR 60 to ZAR 9,905/t and May 2027 added ZAR 67 to ZAR 9,688/t, signalling a relatively firm forward curve despite near-term pressure.

In the physical market, Ukrainian sunflower seeds (black, 98% purity, FOB Odesa) are quoted at EUR 0.39/kg versus EUR 0.394/kg previously, confirming a modest recent decline. Sunflower kernels (meal, FOB Odesa) stand at EUR 0.527/kg, slightly below earlier levels. In Bulgaria, black sunflower seeds (FCA Sofia) trade around EUR 0.44/kg, while hulled bakery kernels are at EUR 0.92–0.92/kg FCA, indicating relatively steady EU seed and kernel values compared with Black Sea softening.

Supply & Demand

Ukrainian sunflower seed supply is ample after a large 2026 harvest, with rapid arrivals into processors weighing on farmgate prices earlier in October. Export demand, however, has picked up significantly: between early September and late October, sunflower seed exports increased several-fold, particularly to Turkey, Italy and Egypt, helping to slow but not fully stop the price decline.

On the oil side, sunflower oil remains relatively tight in global terms. Despite falling palm and soybean oil prices, Black Sea sunflower oil benchmarks are supported by shipment delays and constrained export logistics. Russian FOB offers remain elevated, while Ukrainian domestic oil prices trade lower due to high logistics costs and storage limitations, highlighting a disconnect between inland seed/oil values and seaborne benchmarks.

Fundamentals & Policy

Domestically, Ukrainian processors are facing intermittent disruptions at ports and plants, as well as delayed oil and meal exports. This has increased pressure on sunflower seed prices and, at times, extended delivery waiting times at crushing facilities. Meanwhile, Ukraine has recently adjusted minimum export prices for sunflower seed, which complicates customs valuation and may limit some low-priced export flows even as foreign demand improves.

In South Africa, SAFEX futures reflect a market that is well supplied in the near term yet cautious about medium-term availability and export competition, given strong Black Sea origination. The mild backwardation between nearby and more deferred contracts signals that crushers still foresee reasonable margins, but downside in seeds is capped by firm oil values and robust demand from Europe, the Middle East and Asia.

Weather Outlook

Weather in key Ukrainian sunflower regions at the start of November is largely neutral for the market. The 2026 crop is already harvested and mostly in storage or transit, so short-term temperature and precipitation patterns do not materially change available supply. Recent conditions in core producing oblasts have featured above-normal temperatures and slightly above-average rainfall, primarily affecting soil moisture going into the next planting season rather than the current crop.

Trading Outlook (Next 1–3 Weeks)

  • Importers / crushers: Use current seed weakness in Ukraine and on SAFEX nearby contracts to extend coverage selectively, especially for Q1–Q2 2027, but avoid overbuying as logistics constraints can still widen basis risks.
  • Farmers in Black Sea & Balkans: Price a portion of remaining seed inventories on rallies driven by oil strength or currency moves, while keeping some exposure in case export flows accelerate further.
  • Speculators: The divergence between soft seeds and firm oil suggests opportunities in crush and seed–oil spreads, with a bias to be cautiously long oil vs. short seeds, provided logistics disruptions persist.

3‑Day Directional View

  • SAFEX sunflower futures: Slightly bearish to sideways as local supply remains comfortable and global oilseed sentiment is mixed.
  • Black Sea sunflower seeds (Ukraine, FOB): Sideways with a mild downside bias; export demand cushions further losses but stocks are ample.
  • Sunflower oil benchmarks: Sideways to slightly firmer, supported by ongoing shipping and logistics constraints in the Black Sea corridor.
