Sunflower Seeds Ease While Oil Stays Supported by Black Sea Risks
Concise October 2026 sunflower market update: softer SAFEX futures, pressured Ukrainian seed values, firmer kernels and crude oil, plus trading outlook.
Sunflower markets are trading with a mildly softer tone on seeds but remain underpinned on the oil side by persistent Black Sea logistics risks. SAFEX sunflower futures eased slightly across the 2026/27 strip, reflecting ample seed availability and limited bullish catalysts in the near term.
A larger Ukrainian crop and accelerating harvest are weighing on seed prices, while export and crush bottlenecks prevent a full relief on oil values. Black Sea logistics and security issues continue to inject risk premia into forward sunflower oil, cushioning the downside. Overall, seeds look weak-to-sideways in the short run, whereas oil and some kernel segments retain firmer support.
Prices
SAFEX sunflower futures on 15 October 2026 show modest declines on the nearby and a gentle carry into 2027. October 2026 closed at 10,440 ZAR/t (down 40 ZAR, −0.38% day-on-day), with December 2026 at 10,558 ZAR/t (−12 ZAR, −0.11%). Further forward, March 2027 settled at 9,812 ZAR/t (−38 ZAR, −0.39%), and May 2027 at 9,600 ZAR/t (−30 ZAR, −0.31%), while outer 2027 contracts clustered just below 9,800 ZAR/t. Physical sunflower prices in EUR remain soft on seeds but more mixed on kernels and oil. Ukrainian black sunflower seeds (98% purity) are indicated at 0.41 EUR/kg FCA Odesa and Kyiv, with Black Sea export values at 0.564 EUR/kg FOB Odesa, both broadly stable over the last week after prior declines. Bulgarian and Moldovan black seeds for EU delivery are quoted at 0.44 EUR/kg FCA (Sofia and Rheinfelden Herten), marking a flat but competitive corridor for European crushers and packers. Chinese sunflower products continue to trade at a premium. Striped sunflower seeds stand at 1.48 EUR/kg FOB Beijing, while hulled confection kernels are at 1.08 EUR/kg FOB and bakery kernels at 1.22 EUR/kg FOB. Organic confection kernels from China are quoted at 1.23 EUR/kg FOB, reflecting firm niche demand. In Europe, bakery-grade kernels range from 0.90 EUR/kg FCA Dnipro (Ukraine) to 0.93 EUR/kg FCA Rheinfelden Herten (Moldova) and 0.93 EUR/kg FCA Sofia (Bulgaria), while confection kernels out of Sofia hold at 1.16 EUR/kg FCA. Crude sunflower oil out of Ukraine is somewhat firmer again after a recent dip. The latest quotation for crude sunflower oil CPT Odesa is 1.044 EUR/kg, up from 1.024 EUR/kg earlier in October, but still below mid-September levels, underlining that oil values are better supported than raw seed prices. Recent Ukrainian domestic bids in UAH and USD/t confirm that local purchase prices have fallen noticeably over the last month as harvest volumes accelerate and buyers face handling delays.| Product | Origin | Location / Term | Latest price (EUR/kg) | Direction vs early October |

Supply & Demand
The core fundamental driver remains Ukraine’s significantly larger 2026/27 sunflower crop and the rapid pace of harvest. By mid-October, Ukrainian farmers had harvested about 7.44 million tonnes from 3.44 million hectares, roughly two-thirds of the forecast area, with an average yield around 2.16 t/ha. This points to a comfortable to ample seed balance compared with the tight 2025/26 season. Strong incoming flows are outpacing storage, crush and export capacity in the short term. Reports from Ukrainian processors highlight waiting times of 7‑12 days for seed deliveries due to disruptions from drone attacks and frequent air-raid alerts. This congestion amplifies pressure on farm-gate and inland purchase prices, while also limiting the speed at which seed can be converted into oil and meal for export. Outside Ukraine, Russia and the EU continue to provide substantial seed and oil availability, but Black Sea logistics remain a critical bottleneck. Continued attacks on regional infrastructure and heightened insurance costs keep routing via Black Sea ports risky and expensive, encouraging partial shifts to Danube and overland corridors. These alternative routes, however, are slower and costlier, helping to hold a risk premium in sunflower oil even as global vegetable oil benchmarks have eased slightly on expectations of ample Black Sea supply.

Fundamentals & Weather
The current market is marked by a disconnect between weak seeds and comparatively firmer oil. Ample raw seed supplies and restricted processing/export capacity in Ukraine push local and FOB seed values lower. At the same time, constraints on oil and meal shipments mean that global sunflower oil availability tightens relative to seed abundance, supporting crush margins in theory but complicating realisable returns given logistics and licensing hurdles. In SAFEX terms, the slight backward adjustment of nearby contracts and mild carry into 2027 indicate that the market acknowledges comfortable seed availability without yet pricing in a pronounced oversupply. South African fundamentals are comparatively balanced, with local crushers and feed users benefiting from lower import parity levels. However, international price signals are increasingly driven by Black Sea developments, making regional values sensitive to any escalation in Ukrainian logistics or policy restrictions. Weather conditions across key Black Sea sunflower regions are seasonally conducive to the final stages of harvest. Forecasts for the next 7–10 days point to predominantly dry to mildly showery conditions in central and southern Ukraine, allowing fieldwork to continue with limited interruption. This raises the likelihood that a large share of the crop will reach the market within a short timeframe, further intensifying near-term supply pressure on seeds, particularly if logistical bottlenecks persist.Forecast & Trading Outlook
- Short-term (next 1–3 weeks): Sunflower seed prices in the Black Sea and Europe are likely to remain under downward or sideways pressure as Ukrainian harvest deliveries peak and on-farm stocks rise. SAFEX futures may drift within a soft range, lacking strong support from competing oilseeds.
- Medium-term (4–12 weeks): Once the bulk of the Ukrainian crop is harvested and initial logistical congestion eases, seed prices could stabilise or modestly rebound, particularly if sunflower oil demand from key importers (EU, MENA, Asia) remains steady and freight risks do not worsen.
- Sunflower oil: Crude sunflower oil values are expected to remain relatively better supported than seeds due to continued Black Sea shipping risks and tighter effective oil balance. Any improvement in logistics or relaxation of export controls could trigger a partial convergence, with seeds rising more than oil.
- Crushers: Consider covering a higher share of near-term seed needs at current FCA/FOB levels (e.g., 0.41 EUR/kg FCA Ukraine, 0.44 EUR/kg FCA Bulgaria/Moldova) while keeping oil sales more selectively priced to capture logistics risk premia.
- Importers & packers: For kernel and confection segments, use today’s relatively stable FCA prices in the EU (0.90–0.93 EUR/kg bakery kernels; 1.16 EUR/kg confection) to secure Q4/Q1 coverage, but stagger purchases from higher-priced Chinese origins.
- Producers: Given weak spot bids and long waiting times at plants, evaluate storage and forward sales strategies where feasible, avoiding panic selling during peak delivery congestion if financing allows.
3-Day Directional Outlook
- SAFEX sunflower futures: Slightly bearish to sideways over the next three trading sessions, with limited volatility expected absent new macro or weather shocks.
- Black Sea sunflower seeds (FOB/FCA Ukraine): Bias remains mildly downward to flat as harvest pressure dominates and logistics constraints cap demand-side support.
- Crude sunflower oil (CPT/FOB Black Sea): Sideways to slightly firm on continued freight and insurance risks, with markets watching any fresh disruptions in the region.
