Raisins are rising this season

This season in India raisins has picked up pace and production of raisins has started on sheds. Raisin production has started in about 3k to 4k sheds of production area. During the Holy festival, almost the second week of March, Raisins’ arrival has increased and procurement has reached its peak. However, the prices of raisins have come down by 245 USD per metric tonne in a week. Producers of raisins face problems when raisins turn bitter.

Highest production of raisins in Sangali

In India Maharashtra ranks first in the production of quality raisins. Most of the raisins are being produced in Sangli and Solapur districts of the state and it is also being produced in the Nashik district. In fact, the raisin growers of Sangli district go up to the Karnataka border to produce it. Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and the northern-western part of India, which includes Punjab, Haryana, western Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh, are major grape-growing regions.

This year raisin production started earlier in the Bijapur Athani region on the Karnataka border and is being sold at the earliest. Last year, 0.18 Million Tonnes of raisins were produced by the state and two years ago, it was noted at 0.17 Million Tonnes. Its production increased by 10k Tonnes.

This year season is late by a month – Last week has boosted sales

The pace of the season was not much in the early stages. This year the start of the season has been delayed by a month. But for the last 8-10 days as the deals are increasing it can be seen that the season has picked up pace now. Fresh production has been done in about 3k – 4k sheds in Sangli district. After the sale of new dry grapes, its price ranges from 1583 USD to 3045 USD per Metric Tonne. The arrivals have started increasing since last week. Presently Sangli, Tasgaon and other markets are receiving the arrival of about 10k tonnes of raisins.

Grapes farmers have shifted to raisins to cover economic loss

This year, the climate is not favorable for grapes which makes it difficult to get sweetness in grapes. Grapes fetched good prices at the beginning of the season and after sometime due to rain, the sweetness is lost. As a result, the expected rate is not achieved. Instead of incurring economic loss by selling grapes, grape growers have shifted directly to dry raisin production as they expect to get a better return by producing dry raisins instead of getting crops wasted. Hence fresh production on the shed has started immediately. Although, this environment is favorable for raisins. That’s why quality raisins are being produced.

Raisins are ready for harvesting in about 12 to 14 days after racking. Therefore, the experts of the raisin industry have expressed a preliminary estimate that its production will increase by 10k to 15k tonnes this season.
