KHALILABAD – Many grape cultivars that used to be widely cultivated in Khorasan Razavi province face difficulties in storage and transportation. According to the Khorasan Razavi Agricultural Organization, many grape cultivars cannot be exported unless they are turned into raisins.

In the current situation, due to droughts and climate change, any product that wants to be produced must first think about the amount of water needed and then consider the market. The area of grape vineyards in Khorasan Razavi is 22,000 hectares with an average production of 21 tons per hectare, and the highest area under grape cultivation in this province belongs to Khalilabad city.

Many grape varieties that have been propagated in Khorasan Razavi province cannot be adequately stored and transported for export. For this reason, the grapes are processed into sultanas.

In the current situation, due to droughts and climate change, any product to be produced must first think about the amount of water needed and then consider the market. The area of vineyards in Khorasan Razavi is 22,000 hectares with an average production of 21 tonnes per hectare, and the largest area under grapes is in Khalilabad province.

The vineyard area in this region is about 6,000 hectares. Khalilabad vineyards are remarkable in terms of quantity and quality. The product from this province has a special taste.

In the vineyards of Khalilabad, 30 varieties of grapes are grown, of which the most important varieties are the common Pikami and Asgari. Other grapes of this region are also used for fresh consumption and the production of sultanas. There is four cold storage in Khalilabad with a capacity of 7,000 tonnes.

The city of Khalilabad, with its 18,000 hectares of agricultural land, produces about 238,000 tonnes of livestock, agricultural and horticultural products, of which one-third is grapes.

The green sultanas of the city of Khalilabad are world-famous, and many of the Mikami grape varieties of this city are processed into sultanas. In the last two weeks, the price of foreign currency in Iran has increased. The rise in the price of foreign currencies is the doubt that the US will return to the JCAPOA agreement.

Given the elections in Iran and the victory of the JCPOA opposition in the elections, it is expected that negotiations will be suspended until mid-August until the new Iranian government takes office.

For the aforementioned reasons, the prices of most Iranian sultana exports have dropped by about 2 to 3 per cent compared to the last two weeks.

However, the prices of green sultanas from Khalilabad increased last week due to good export demand. This compensated for the fall in prices of the other varieties. Overall, the price of this product has increased by about 1.5 per cent compared to the last two weeks.
