Wheat prices remain broadly stable while below-normal rainfall and low soil moisture in India threaten rabi sowing and future supply. Key risks and trading outlook.

Below-normal rainfall and poor soil moisture across large parts of India are emerging as a key forward risk for the global wheat balance, even as spot physical prices in Europe and the Black Sea remain broadly stable. Any sustained impact on Indian rabi wheat sowing and yields would tighten the medium-term supply outlook and could support prices from current levels. Moisture stress is reported across many Indian states, with around 58% of monitored districts receiving below-average or substantially deficient rainfall in the latest assessment. This is weighing on expectations for the upcoming rabi season, particularly for wheat and mustard, which depend on adequate residual moisture and reliable irrigation at establishment. For now, physical quotations from Ukraine, France, Germany and the US show only limited day-to-day movement, but markets are increasingly sensitive to fresh data on Indian rainfall, reservoir storage and planting progress.

Recent physical wheat indications show a broadly sideways trend with modest movement along quality and origin lines:

Supply & Demand

India’s moisture situation is the key new driver on the fundamental side. Approximately 58% of monitored districts have recorded rainfall below their long-term average or with substantial deficits, affecting soil moisture ahead of rabi planting. Karnataka, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh are among the states of concern, many of which are important for wheat, mustard and pulses.

Reduced water availability, together with concerns about reservoir storage, may influence farmers’ sowing choices. Crops that require reliable irrigation at early growth stages, including wheat, could see delayed or reduced planting if conditions do not improve. The ultimate impact on India’s wheat output will depend on rainfall in the coming weeks, replenishment of reservoir levels, irrigation access and relative returns versus competing rabi crops.

Globally, current physical price quotations point to adequate nearby availability from the Black Sea and Europe, with only mild firming in some feed and higher grades. However, India’s role as a large producer and consumer means that any meaningful downgrade to its 2026/27 rabi wheat crop would tighten regional balances in South Asia and could increase import requirements later in the marketing year.

Fundamentals & Weather

The weak monsoon performance and subsequent below-normal rainfall into October have left parts of India with reduced soil moisture and heightened reliance on irrigation for rabi crops. Market participants are watching both Indian Meteorological Department outlooks, which indicate a risk of continued rainfall deficits in several regions, and Central Water Commission reservoir bulletins showing storage below last year and trailing multi-year averages in some key basins.

If these moisture and storage constraints persist, farmers may shift area from water-sensitive crops towards those with lower irrigation needs or better profitability, potentially limiting wheat area. Mustard and some pulses will also compete for acreage, adding uncertainty to India’s rabi crop mix. For now, international prices have not fully priced in a severe Indian shortfall, but the risk premium could increase quickly on evidence of poor emergence or reduced sowing progress.

Outside India, weather in the Black Sea and EU remains seasonally less critical after harvest, and current exportable supplies appear comfortable. This cushions the short-term market impact but does not fully offset the potential medium-term tightening if India’s rabi season underperforms.

Forecast & Trading Outlook

  • Flat-to-firm bias: With Ukrainian and European physical prices stable to slightly firmer and Indian rabi risks rising, the directional bias for wheat over the coming weeks is mildly upward from current levels.
  • Weather-driven volatility: Traders should expect higher sensitivity to Indian rainfall, reservoir and sowing progress updates. Negative weather or planting news could quickly translate into higher nearby and forward values.
  • Hedging strategies: Consumers with Q1–Q2 2027 coverage gaps may consider layering in additional volumes on price dips, while producers could hold a slightly lower hedging ratio near current physical levels, awaiting clearer signals from India’s rabi campaign.
  • Quality spreads: Given stable quotations for higher-protein origins, watch for potential widening of spreads if Indian quality or yields are compromised.

3-Day Price Indication

  • Black Sea (Ukraine, CPT/FCA): Sideways to slightly firm; current levels around 0.15–0.176 EUR/kg are expected to hold barring abrupt news.
  • EU (France, Germany): Mostly steady; recent mild firmness in German feed values suggests limited downside near term.
  • US (FOB CBOT-linked): Stable with modest downside risk capped by global weather and Indian rabi uncertainty.
