The government of North Macedonia has decided to ban the export of sunflower seeds until the end of the year, the country’s agriculture ministry said on Thursday.

The decision was made in order to meet the domestic demand of sunflower oil producers after the end of the harvest. The oilseed harvest itself should begin in the second half of August.

“In 2022, we expect to harvest 11.8 thousand tons of sunflower seeds, and we have enough stocks to meet domestic demand for two months ahead,” the ministry added.

According to the country’s statistical office, over 5.5 thousand tons of sunflower seeds were harvested in North Macedonia in 2021.

Recall that in the spring the Cabinet of Ministers of the country decided to abolish the mandatory tax fee for the import of sunflower oil into the country. The government took this step to supply the domestic market with the necessary amount of products and curb consumer price growth.
