First 3,000 t Ukrainian rapeseed oil shipment via Gdańsk to Scandinavia signals new export corridor, supporting EU supply while Ukrainian and French prices soften.

A first 3,000‑tonne shipment of Ukrainian crude rapeseed oil via Poland’s Gdańsk port to Scandinavia marks a small but strategically important shift in Black Sea oilseed logistics, easing part of the war‑related export bottleneck. For the rapeseed complex, it adds a new corridor that could gradually stabilise EU physical supply and temper extreme basis volatility. Rapeseed prices and logistics are currently shaped by moderate futures levels, softer physical premiums and constrained but adapting Ukrainian export flows. The new Gdańsk route demonstrates that processed oilseed products can increasingly bypass vulnerable Black Sea routes and overland bottlenecks. If scaled, it may reinforce EU crushers’ access to Ukrainian origin while diversifying outlets toward Scandinavian biodiesel and food oil demand.

Supply & Demand and the New Gdańsk Corridor

The inaugural 3,000‑tonne crude rapeseed oil shipment organized by Getreide AG establishes a proof‑of‑concept for routing Ukrainian oilseed products through Gdańsk to Scandinavian buyers. It shows that European logistics – rail, road and Polish seaports – can handle value‑added oil flows, not only bulk grains. The war continues to disrupt traditional Black Sea maritime routes, forcing Ukrainian exporters to rely on alternative corridors. Transit rules in Poland explicitly allow Ukrainian agricultural goods destined for export to move under customs transit to Baltic ports such as Gdańsk, Gdynia and others, which are emerging as key outlets for third‑country shipments.  For EU buyers, especially in Scandinavia, this corridor increases optionality between Danube, Black Sea and Baltic loadings. It may gradually reduce the freight and risk premium embedded in Ukrainian rapeseed oil offers when security conditions in the Black Sea deteriorate, supporting more predictable supply for crushers and biodiesel producers.

Prices and Basis: Ukraine vs. Western Europe

The latest physical quotations show Ukrainian rapeseed maintaining a discount to Western European origins. In Odesa, Ukrainian rape seeds grade 1 (< 35 mcm) are indicated at EUR 0.414/kg CPT, while 42% min oil, 98% purity lots stand around EUR 0.44/kg FCA Odesa and EUR 0.43/kg FCA Kyiv. French rapeseed in Paris is quoted at EUR 0.59/kg FOB. Over October, Ukrainian CPT Odesa values have traded in a relatively narrow band around EUR 0.40–0.44/kg, with a small step down from mid‑month highs near EUR 0.445/kg. French FOB Paris, by contrast, has eased from EUR 0.64/kg to EUR 0.59/kg, mirroring the recent softening on Euronext while still retaining a strong premium over Ukrainian seed. On the futures side, Euronext rapeseed contracts are hovering in the low‑ to mid‑500s EUR/t. Nearby November 2026 has recently traded around EUR 528–530/t, with February 2027 near EUR 538–546/t and later contracts clustering in a narrow range, indicating a relatively flat forward curve and limited carry.  This structure suggests a market more in balance than in pronounced deficit, with spot‑to‑forward spreads offering only modest storage incentives.

Fundamentals and Role of Ukrainian Exports

The Gdańsk shipment confirms that, despite ongoing security risks, Ukrainian rapeseed and rapeseed oil are still reaching EU buyers via multiple corridors. Baltic routes through Poland now complement flows via Odesa‑region ports, Danube ports and overland deliveries, helping Ukrainian exporters to maintain presence in the EU rapeseed complex.  For the EU, imported rapeseed remains essential to keep crushers running at high utilisation, especially when domestic crops and logistics are under pressure.  At the same time, recent reports point to mixed conditions for EU rapeseed production. Farmers have largely marketed the 2026 crop, while dry soils in France and western Germany are complicating sowing of the 2027 crop, introducing some medium‑term weather risk.  However, current futures pricing does not signal acute nearby scarcity, implying that import flows – including Ukrainian seed and oil – are sufficiently strong for now.

Weather and Logistics Outlook

Short‑term weather across key rapeseed regions in Ukraine, France and Germany is seasonally cool with intermittent precipitation, but no extreme events have been flagged in the very near term by major forecast centres. This implies limited immediate weather‑driven production shocks, though moisture deficits in parts of western Europe remain a watchpoint for the 2027 crop.  Logistically, the viability of the Gdańsk corridor will depend on rail capacity from Ukraine, terminal slots at Polish ports and political stability around transit rules. Any tightening of Polish transit conditions or congestion at Baltic berths could cap volumes, while further investment in handling capacity and streamlined customs procedures would allow more frequent Ukrainian oilseed and oil shipments to Scandinavia and other non‑EU destinations.

Trading Outlook and 3‑Day View

  • EU crushers and biodiesel producers: Consider diversifying procurement between traditional Black Sea/Danube loadings and Baltic‑routed Ukrainian rapeseed oil where available, to reduce logistics and security risk concentration.
  • Ukrainian producers/exporters: Use the current flat Euronext curve and stable Ukrainian CPT/FCA indications around EUR 0.40–0.44/kg to forward‑sell modest volumes, particularly tied to Baltic export options, while retaining flexibility in case of logistics disruptions.
  • Importers in Scandinavia and Northern Europe: Explore term contracts linked to Gdańsk loadings to secure supply ahead of potential weather‑related tightness in the 2027 EU crop and any renewed Black Sea tensions.
Region / Contract Current indication 3‑day directional outlook
Ukraine, Odesa – rape seeds grade 1 < 35 mcm, CPT EUR 0.414/kg Sideways to slightly firm, supported by export interest and logistics optionality.
Ukraine, Odesa – rape seeds 42% min oil, 98% purity, FCA EUR 0.44/kg Stable, with limited volatility expected absent new Black Sea incidents.
France, Paris – rape seeds FOB EUR 0.59/kg Mild downside risk if Euronext continues to trade in the low‑ to mid‑500s EUR/t range.
