Pistachio is a strategic product with a significant position among agricultural products, so this product constitutes a major part of Iran’s non-oil exports.
According to the association’s estimates, 125,000 tons of pistachios have been consumed out of the total forecast of 140,000 tons of pistachio products available in the business year (October 2021 to September 2022). 20,000 tons of pistachios have been sold in Iran out of the total consumption of 125,000 tons in the last business year. The export weight of all types of pistachios was 88,000 tons, which decreased by 57 percent compared to the previous business year.
In the past year, 20,000 tons of pistachios were exported to the Far East, which has decreased by 76 percent. 19,000 tons were exported to the Commonwealth of Nations as the second destination of Iran’s pistachio exports, which has a 24 percent drop compared to the previous year when 25,000 tons were exported. 18,000 tons were exported to the third export market of Iran, which is the market of the Indian subcontinent, which has decreased by 50 percent compared to the previous business year (36,000 tons). The fourth export destination is the EU market, which bought 16,000 tons of Iranian pistachios. The share of this market has decreased by 41 percent compared to the previous business year (27,000 tons)
America and Turkey are great rivals of Iran
America and Turkey are great rivals of Iran in the world pistachio market. In 2022, America produced about 600,000 tons of pistachios, of which 100,000 to 150,000 tons are consumed in the country. Also, 150,000 to 200,000 tons are used in the American continent, and the rest is exported to other places. The position of the Iranian pistachio market is always preserved because of its excellent quality and taste. The customer always prefers to buy Iranian pistachios, and if Iranian pistachios are not available, he will purchase American pistachios.
About 200,000 people are working in jobs related to pistachios. Currently, pistachios are cultivated in 27 provinces of Iran. This product is mainly cultivated in Kerman, Razavi Khorasan, South Khorasan, Yazd, and Fars.
