Climatic changes and water problems are among the factors that threaten pistachios in Khorasan Razavi province, which is the center of pistachio production. Mahvelat city ranks first in pistachio cultivation and production in Khorasan Razavi province with an area of 19,300 hectares of pistachios and an average of more than 21,000 tons of dried pistachios production per year.

According to the Agricultural Organization of Mahvelat, the increase in temperature and precipitation fluctuations are among the factors of climate change that is happening in most parts of the world, including Iran. In addition to climate change, the management plans of the government that are being applied to manage the consumption of water and electricity resources (including the blackout of agricultural wells in the summer) will result in a decrease in the production of the city’s horticultural crops, especially pistachios. Mahvelat city with an area of 19,300 hectares of pistachios and an average of more than 21,000 tons of dried pistachios production each year has the first place in the pistachio cultivation and production area in Khorasan Razavi province.

From early August this year, a temperature of more than 44 degrees Celsius was recorded in Mahvelat city, which has caused concerns about the pistachio kernel filling process. It has also damaged the pomegranate crops of the city, in addition to the increase in the irrigation regime of gardens due to the blackout program of agricultural wells. Monoculture is another agricultural problem in Mahvelt city. The farmers of this area have only turned to pistachio cultivation due to the favorable conditions of pistachio cultivation in this city and the high economic income. Undoubtedly, the region’s economy will be affected due to the climatic and management problems that lead to a decrease in production.

Some factors are significant to increase production and ensure food security of the region and the country, including identifying methods compatible with climate change by determining the pattern of cultivation, development or creation of stress-resistant cultivars by research centers, and necessary planning in water and electricity supply needed by the agricultural sector, using new energy production methods.

Compared to the last month, the price of Iranian pistachios and pistachio kernels for export has decreased in the world markets. The most important reason for the decrease in the price of this product in global markets is the sharp decline in domestic and export demand due to the approach of the pistachio harvest season. The price reduction of Iranian pistachios and pistachio kernels for export in the international markets over the past month was due to the drop in the exchange rate of foreign currencies against the Rial. However, the decrease in the demand for Iranian pistachios and pistachio kernels over the past few weeks has caused the price of this Iranian product to fall in the world markets compared to last month, in addition to compensating for the increase in price due to the decrease in the cost of foreign currencies.
