Rapeseed market analysis: MATIF futures push higher while EU and Ukrainian cash prices ease on strong supply, logistics constraints and softer canola.

Rapeseed futures on Euronext rallied sharply today, diverging from weaker canola in Canada and easing physical prices in the Black Sea, especially for Ukrainian origins. The move reflects short-covering and firm crush margins rather than a sudden tightening of nearby seed supply. After a volatile month, the rapeseed complex is caught between high European stocks, constrained Ukrainian logistics and mixed oilseed sentiment. Nearby Euronext contracts jumped, with the Nov 2026 position breaking back above the €500/t mark, while ICE canola eased further. In the physical market, EU FOB values have retreated from early‑October highs and Ukrainian FCA/CPT indications remain under pressure from logistics frictions and ample farmer selling. Traders face an increasingly inverted futures curve that rewards storage but questions the sustainability of today’s spike.

Prices

Euronext rapeseed futures strengthened across the forward curve on October 22, led by nearby contracts:

Contract Last (EUR/t) Change (EUR/t) Change (%)
Nov 2026 (Nov 26) 500.50 14.75 +3.04%
Feb 2027 (Feb 27) 550.50 10.25 +1.90%
May 2027 (Mai 27) 552.75 9.00 +1.66%
Aug 2027 (Aug 27) 531.50 8.00 +1.53%
Nov 2027 (Nov 27) 533.75 6.50 +1.23%

The curve remains strongly inverted between Nov 2026 and Feb 2027, with Feb 27 trading about €50/t over Nov, far wider than typical mid‑season levels and underlining tight nearby coverage and attractive crush margins. ICE canola benchmarks, by contrast, closed lower on October 21, with the front Nov 2026 contract at CAD 772.00/t, down 1.17% on the day, keeping a soft tone in the wider oilseed complex.

In the physical market, EU rapeseed prices have eased from late‑September peaks. French FOB rapeseed fell sharply between September 28 and October 12, tracking a correction in the November Euronext contract before today’s rebound. Our latest quotations show:

Origin Specification Location / Term Price (EUR/kg) Prev. Price (EUR/kg) Last Update
Ukraine Rape seeds, 42% min oil, 98% purity Kyiv, FCA 0.44 0.45 2026-10-22
Ukraine Rape seeds, 42% min oil, 98% purity Odesa, FCA 0.45 0.46 2026-10-22
Ukraine Rape seeds, grade 1, < 35 mcm Odesa, CPT 0.418 0.401 2026-10-21
France Rape seeds Paris, FOB 0.63 0.64 2026-10-16

This highlights a short‑term softening for Ukrainian FCA/FCA values since mid‑October, even as futures surged, while higher‑value French FOB quotes remain at a premium but are also off their recent highs.

Supply & Demand

European rapeseed balances remain relatively comfortable after a multi‑year period of expanded plantings and only modest demand growth from the biodiesel and food sectors. Official projections still point to increased harvested area in MY 2026/27 versus the prior season, maintaining sizeable domestic seed availability. However, recent analysis notes that EU average rapeseed yields in 2026 have underperformed historical norms in several regions due to summer drought stress and patchy rainfall, limiting any surplus expansion.

Ukraine continues to play a pivotal swing‑supply role. Despite Black Sea security risks and attacks on port infrastructure, rapeseed remains one of the more profitable export crops, with exporters increasingly relying on overland routes and Danube ports. Customs data show that rapeseed exports accelerated in early October, even as overall agricultural shipments slowed due to congestion and logistical bottlenecks. Previous weeks already saw robust September rapeseed and rapeseed‑oil shipments, underlining strong foreign demand for both seeds and processed products.

In the global oilseed context, softer canola futures in Canada reflect comfortable on‑farm supplies and a market that is paying for storage rather than immediate delivery, contrasting with the inverted Euronext structure. At the same time, some Asian rapeseed‑mustard markets are firming on strong mill demand and seasonally lower arrivals, adding a floor to international price downside. Overall, the rapeseed complex is being pulled between ample Northern Hemisphere seed stocks and resilient crush and biodiesel demand.

Fundamentals & Basis

The widening premium of Euronext February over November, alongside today’s strong intraday gains, signals a mix of short‑covering and improving forward demand. Physical indicators tell a more nuanced story: our FCA Kyiv and FCA Odesa quotations slipped by EUR 0.01/kg on October 22, while CPT Odesa grade‑1 values have recovered modestly from early‑month lows but remain well below late‑September levels. This points to loosened nearby supply in Ukraine and continued pressure from high logistics costs.

Within the EU, French FOB rapeseed has corrected significantly since late September, in line with the earlier pullback in November futures before today’s bounce. Market commentary notes that EU cash prices fell more steeply than futures during that period, compressing basis levels, particularly in exporting hubs. With today’s futures rally, crushers and exporters face a tougher margin environment unless seed basis weakens further or vegetable oil and meal prices strengthen.

Logistics remain a key driver. While EU “Solidarity Lanes” continue to support Ukrainian exports via rail, road and Danube waterways, infrastructure and border constraints mean that increased export registrations do not always translate into higher spot prices at main export bases. This helps explain why Ukrainian CPT and FCA indications have not followed Euronext higher on a one‑to‑one basis and why regional spreads between Black Sea, EU and Canadian origins are currently in flux.

Weather & Crop Outlook

For winter rapeseed in Western and Central Europe, recent rainfall episodes in key regions such as France and Belgium have improved soil moisture after a dry late‑summer period, supporting crop establishment for the 2026/27 season. Agronomic advisories emphasize careful management of sowing dates and plant density to mitigate weed pressure and pest risk under these changing conditions.

In parts of Central and Eastern Europe, agronomists report still‑dry topsoils and uneven emergence, leaving some yield risk if autumn rains remain below normal. However, it is too early to draw firm conclusions for next year’s crop; current market pricing is driven more by stocks and logistics than by new‑crop weather concerns.

Trading Outlook (Next 1–2 Weeks)

  • Producers (EU & Ukraine): The sharp Euronext rally and wide Feb/Nov inverse argue for incremental sales on strength for nearby positions, especially where local basis remains historically firm. However, given logistics uncertainty and still‑supportive crush demand, retaining some unpriced tonnage for Q1 2027 may be prudent.
  • Crushers: Elevated futures and squeezed margins suggest favoring hand‑to‑mouth nearby coverage while looking for dips or basis softening—particularly in Ukrainian and some EU origins—to extend coverage into early 2027.
  • Traders: The current futures–physical disconnect offers opportunities in spreads and inter‑origin arbitrage. Watch for any further disruption of Black Sea logistics or shifts in biodiesel policy that could quickly tighten physical availability and re‑inflate basis.

3‑Day Directional Outlook

  • Euronext (MATIF) rapeseed: Bias moderately higher to sideways after the recent spike, with potential consolidation above the €490–500/t area for Nov 2026 if external oilseeds stay stable.
  • Black Sea / Ukraine (FCA, CPT): Local prices likely to remain under mild pressure versus futures, with only limited upside unless logistics tighten further or European crushers step up spot buying.
  • EU FOB (France): Sideways to slightly firmer, tracking futures but capped by good regional availability and competition from other oilseeds.
