Rapeseed Under Pressure as Energy, Canola and Soyoil Weigh on Prices

Rapeseed prices face renewed pressure from weaker energy markets, higher Canadian canola stocks and burdensome soyoil supplies, despite firm export demand.

Rapeseed markets remain under broad downward pressure as weaker energy prices, heavier global oilseed stocks and burdensome soyoil supplies outweigh still-solid export demand for Ukrainian seed. The current environment is characterized by squeezed farm margins in Ukraine, rising logistics costs and soft biodiesel-linked demand, while futures in Paris and ICE canola drift lower. At the same time, structural shifts in EU biodiesel feedstock usage — away from palm oil and towards rapeseed and canola — and resilient export interest for Ukrainian rapeseed help to limit the downside. Over the coming months, the balance between high stock levels and gradually recovering biofuel demand will determine whether the market stabilizes or sees another leg lower.

Prices

Ukrainian rapeseed prices have fallen to about 17,000–18,000 UAH per tonne ex-farm, while export bids are reported around 475–500 USD per tonne for Danube ports and 500–520 USD per tonne at the western border. Higher inland transport costs are eroding producer netbacks and amplifying the impact of the nominal price decline.

Export demand remains comparatively firm despite weaker world prices: bids for truck deliveries to Constanta are still around 575–580 USD per tonne, while European buyers in the Czech Republic and Latvia are paying about 520–525 EUR per tonne for November–December delivery. Forward bids for January–February are already lower, signaling continued bearish sentiment along the curve.

Physical quotations mirror this pressure. In Ukraine, rapeseed (grade 1, < 35 mcm) in Odesa is indicated at 0.414 EUR/kg CPT, while 42% oil, 98% purity rapeseed stands at 0.44 EUR/kg FCA Odesa and 0.43 EUR/kg FCA Kyiv. In France, rapeseed FOB Paris is quoted at 0.59 EUR/kg. On the futures side, Euronext rapeseed for February 2027 last traded at 538.50 EUR/t, while ICE canola January 2027 closed at 781.80 CAD/t, with the nearby canola curve down roughly 0.8–1.0% on the day.

Supply & Demand

Canada adds a major bearish weight to the global balance. Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada has raised its 2026/27 canola ending stocks forecast by roughly one-third to about 1.98 million tonnes, reflecting larger carry-in and improved production. This implies a stocks-to-use ratio close to 9%, signalling more comfortable supplies and potentially aggressive export competition into 2027.

Ukrainian export demand for rapeseed remains relatively resilient, with steady flows to EU destinations via Danube ports and overland routes. However, the combination of lower international flat prices and rising transportation and handling costs means that Ukrainian farmers capture only a small fraction of FOB and CIF values, discouraging additional farmer selling at current levels.

In the broader vegetable oil complex, China is a key source of pressure. Chinese soyoil stocks rose to almost 1.5 million tonnes at the end of October, about 4.3% above last year and the highest level for this time of year since at least 2024. Crushers are processing large soybean volumes while domestic consumption lags, resulting in swelling soyoil and soymeal inventories. Chinese exporters have more than tripled soyoil exports to nearly 800,000 tonnes in the first nine months of 2026, yet Dalian soyoil futures still slipped by around 1%, underlining the weight of surplus supplies.

Fundamentals & Biofuel Demand

The energy complex has shifted from a temporary dip below 101 USD per barrel in Brent to a still-elevated but recently softer range slightly above 100 USD per barrel. Recent assessments place Brent around 103–104 USD per barrel, down from late-October highs but historically strong. The earlier retreat below 101 USD per barrel triggered another leg of weakness in vegetable oils and oilseeds used for biodiesel and renewable diesel, including rapeseed.

In the United States, biofuel feedstock demand is in flux. Use of soyoil for biofuels in August fell by about 17% month-on-month to roughly 635,000 tonnes, with renewable diesel plants cutting soyoil use by over 28%. In contrast, canola oil consumption in biofuel production increased by about 15.5%, with renewable diesel usage up nearly 30%. High stocks of waste oils and tallow, together with softer fuel demand, have added further downward pressure to feedstock prices, reducing the immediate need for additional rapeseed oil in North American biofuel blends.

In Europe, structural policy changes are reshaping feedstock demand. EU palm oil imports between 1 July and 18 October 2026 have generally declined as several member states no longer allow palm-based fuels to count towards national blending mandates. The Netherlands remains the main trade hub with around 302,000 tonnes, while Italy cut imports by 29% to roughly 196,000 tonnes and Germany by 5% to about 70,600 tonnes. Greece bucked the trend with imports rising to 33,000 tonnes. Overall, this reinforces a medium-term shift away from palm oil and supports demand for alternative oils such as rapeseed and canola, especially in the biodiesel sector.

Weather & Short-Term Outlook

Weather is currently a secondary driver compared with stocks and macro factors, with no acute, widely reported crop threats in the major rapeseed belts of the EU or Canada over the past few days. Instead, market attention is concentrated on elevated inventories, logistics constraints in the Black Sea region, and the trajectory of energy and biofuel policies.

For late 2026 and early 2027, a gradual recovery in biofuel demand is expected, supported by US blending mandates and favourable margins for renewable diesel. However, given the present overhang in vegetable oil and feedstock stocks, the pace of this recovery is uncertain. Until clearer evidence of tightening emerges — through faster stock drawdowns or weather-related production issues — the global rapeseed market is likely to remain capped on rallies, with end-users well covered and producers under continued margin pressure.

Trading Outlook (Next Weeks)

  • Producers (Ukraine/EU): Consider incremental, scale-up sales on rallies towards stronger basis or futures levels, as elevated global canola stocks and heavy soyoil supply still argue against a sustained bull run. Prioritize logistics optimization to protect netbacks given high transport costs.
  • Crushers & Consumers: Use current weakness to extend coverage into Q1–Q2 2027, especially in regions exposed to declining palm oil availability for biodiesel. Monitor spreads between rapeseed and competing oils, as structural EU demand could tighten balances faster than expected once stocks start to normalize.
  • Traders & Speculators: The combination of heavier Canadian canola stocks, high Chinese soyoil inventories and only moderately softer Brent suggests a cautious, sell-on-strength bias in rapeseed futures, while keeping optionality for a weather or policy-led tightening later in 2027.

3-Day Directional View

  • Euronext Rapeseed (Feb 2027): Bias mildly lower to sideways around 538.50 EUR/t as macro sentiment and heavy oilseed stocks limit upside.
  • ICE Canola (Jan 2027): After the recent 0.8–1.0% daily drop to 781.80 CAD/t, scope for modest additional weakness remains if energy prices or soyoil futures soften further.
  • Physical Black Sea & EU: Ukrainian CPT/FCA levels and EU FOB values are likely to remain under slight downward pressure, with export differentials favouring demand but keeping farm-gate prices compressed.
