SAFEX Sunflower Slips While Black Sea Seed Stays Under Harvest Pressure

SAFEX sunflower futures ease around ZAR 10,200/t while Black Sea and EU seed prices remain under harvest pressure; crushers see improved margins but export risks persist.

Sunflower markets are currently softening, with SAFEX futures down around 1.5–1.7% on 5 November and Black Sea/EU physical seed values still under pressure from ample new-crop supplies. Crushers’ margins have improved slightly as seed prices ease faster than oil, but logistics and export risks in the Black Sea continue to cap downside for processed products. With the 2026 Black Sea crop largely harvested and safely in storage, price direction is now dominated by export capacity, crush margins and policy rather than weather. SAFEX sunflower contracts from November 2026 to May 2027 are trading just below 10,400 ZAR/t, extending the mild correction that began after October’s rebound. In Europe, FCA/FOB quotes for Ukrainian, Moldovan and Bulgarian seeds and kernels are mostly stable to slightly lower, signaling a comfortable nearby supply situation but also relatively cautious demand.

Prices

On 5 November 2026, SAFEX sunflower futures posted a broad, moderate decline across the forward curve. The November 2026 contract closed at 10,170 ZAR/t (−160 ZAR, −1.57% day-on-day), while December 2026 settled at 10,216 ZAR/t (−159 ZAR, −1.56%). March 2027 ended at 9,740 ZAR/t (−165 ZAR, −1.69%), and May 2027 at 9,545 ZAR/t (−143 ZAR, −1.50%), confirming a softening but still relatively firm structure compared with early September levels.

Physical seed and product quotations in Europe show a mixed but slightly easier tone. Key current indications in EUR are:

Black Sea FOB sunflower seed benchmarks show Russia around USD 285/t and Romania near USD 595/t, illustrating a wide spread between lower-priced origin and higher-value EU export positions. Together with steady DAP Constanța values, this confirms that international prices remain pressured but not collapsing, in line with the moderate decline seen on SAFEX.

Supply & Demand

Global sunflower seed production in 2026/27 is expected to rise moderately versus last season, driven by larger crops in Ukraine, Russia and Moldova, only partly offset by more modest growth in the EU. Ukraine’s sunflower harvest is estimated in the low-to-mid teens of million tonnes, significantly above the weather-affected crop of 2025, while Russia also reports solid output.

However, availability to international buyers is shaped more by logistics than by field yields. Major Ukrainian deepwater ports around Odesa have seen intermittent disruption and capacity constraints since mid-year, forcing more flows through Danube and land corridors. This is slowing exports of both seed and oil and contributing to a build-up of inland stocks, especially in eastern Ukraine.

Within the EU and Balkans, Bulgaria and Romania have harvested good crops, and Bulgarian seed prices have been under clear harvest pressure since late September. EU sunflower oil output remains sizeable, but crush decisions are increasingly sensitive to export margins amid volatile freight and competition from rapeseed and soybean oil.

Fundamentals & Weather

The current fundamental picture is mildly bearish for seeds but more balanced for kernels and oil. Seed prices in Ukraine have trended lower since early October, reflected in FCA/FOB quotes for black 98% seeds in Odesa and Kyiv, while bakery-grade hulled kernels in Dnipro have held steady around their recent levels. This divergence supports crush and hulling margins where export channels remain functional.

Weather is now a marginal factor. The 2026 sunflower crop in Ukraine and most Black Sea origins is fully harvested, and early-November conditions have no material impact on yields. Forecasts for November point to near-normal temperatures (around 1–7°C) and typical precipitation across Ukraine, implying low risk to storage, transport and remaining field operations. Consequently, export capacity, policy and energy security overshadow agronomic concerns.

In Ukraine, vegetable oil exports face mounting pressure as shifts in destination markets and competition from rapeseed oil reduce sunflower oil shipments, despite sufficient crush capacity. Processors’ profitability increasingly hinges on stable corridors for both oil and meal; any renewed disruptions could quickly tighten available supplies for European buyers even while seeds remain abundant at origin.

Outlook & Trading Pointers

Over the coming sessions, SAFEX sunflower futures are likely to consolidate slightly below recent highs, with the curve anchored around 10,000–10,300 ZAR/t for nearby 2026/27 contracts unless there is a significant shift in currency, energy prices or Black Sea logistics. The recent 1.5–1.7% daily pull-back suggests more a correction from October’s rebound than the start of a deep downturn, particularly as international seed benchmarks also show only gradual erosion.

For the physical market, new-crop pressure in the Balkans and Ukraine should keep seed offers competitive into year-end, but downside may be limited by relatively firmer kernel and oil values plus ongoing risks around Ukrainian exports. Buyers with coverage into Q1 2027 can afford some patience, while crushers and shellers may find this window attractive to secure volumes at currently favorable differentials between seed and processed products.

Focused trading recommendations

  • Crushers (SAFEX-linked): Consider incremental seed coverage against the current SAFEX dip, especially for Q1–Q2 2027, while avoiding over-hedging in case Black Sea export disruptions tighten oil later in the season.
  • European kernel buyers: With bakery-grade kernels from Ukraine and Bulgaria broadly stable, stagger purchases rather than front-loading; retain some upside protection in case logistics or energy shocks lift processing premiums.
  • Seed importers in EU/MENA: Use presently soft Ukrainian and Moldovan seed offers to extend coverage modestly, but maintain flexibility on origin selection to mitigate port or corridor-related delays.

3-day price indication

  • SAFEX sunflower (South Africa): Sideways to slightly softer bias after the latest 1.5–1.7% decline, with intraday volatility driven by ZAR moves and broader vegetable oil sentiment.
  • Black Sea sunflower seed (FOB Russia/Romania): Largely stable with a mild soft tone as harvest pressure persists but export logistics and freight prevent any sharp sell-off.
  • EU physical seeds & kernels (BG/MD/UA): Mostly steady at current EUR FCA/FOB levels, with limited short-term downside and some scope for basis tightening if Ukrainian export flows are further disrupted.
